Hey once again! I am wanting to buy a non Indy whip, and heard about Rhett Kelly's whip store. I want to buy the 12 plait nylon whip as a 9 foot. The reason of this being is I tried out a Joe Strain whip yesterday (it was a 9 foot Kangeroo whip) and it was a blast. I loved everything about it; the handle, the roll, the crack, and I taught myself how to do a underhand crack. Now these whips by Rhett, I noticed their handles are considerably thin. If it is a nine foot like the Joe Strain I mentioned, will the handle on it make much of a difference if I tried to do a underhand crack? Thanks!

I have a 7' Rhett Kelly. His whips are great quality. You'll be fine.
IMHO, the handle length and thickness is pretty much irrelevant. Other factors - leather vs. synthetic, balance, thong length, fall length, popper - seem to be more of a difference, unless you're to the extremes of a snake whip or a stock whip.
The big difference between most nylon whips and leather whips is the weight and weight distribution. Nylon whips tend to be lighter through the length of the thong than leather whips. For any given motion a leather whip will "do more of the work" by itself, compared to a nylon whip of the same length where you need to provide slightly more "oomph".
As you can tell, this is deeply scientific.
That's just a generality, though. I've cracked some craptastic leather whips that are inferior to some really nice synthetic whips.
