Indy Purchased a new Morgan

Post by Andiana »

I just noticed something in ROTLA that I can't believe I hadn't seen before. After Indy escaped the boulder by jumping through the passage way, he lands infront of Belloq and the natives (Havitios). Indy then takes his gun like he's gonna threaten Belloq (or shoot him with) when the natives raise their weapons and Indy then makes it look like he's merely giving Belloq the gun. Then I see that Belloq has Indy's whip neatly coiled in his hands, in the shot right before Indy gives him the Idol. So, after running off, Indy leaves his Webley, Whip and Idol with Belloq.
So after getting back to the states, he must have bought a new whip and got another gun! I never had thought of that. It looks like the newer whip is darker than his old one he left with Belloq. Just watch the film (DVD prefeably) and look through the begining scenes, and compare the whips. I did, and there is a difference.

The other thing, is that Indy only had that one whip, and I know this because he stated it in one of the novels. "Trust me"

I watching the DVD, I also noticed that Belloq keeps Indy's whip, along with his revolver and the idol.
I seems that Indy had a spare whip and an extra revolver back at home...doesn't it? :)

I always assumed Indy had more than one whip anyway, despite whatever it said in the novels. If the novels seem to contradict what the movies indicate, I usually take the movies as the truth. So if it looks as though Indy has another whip later on in the film, I'd say he had more than one. Anyway, I kind of figured that Belloq sent Indy his S&W and his whip back as sort of a professional courtesey (and also a way to gloat and rub it in about the idol.) Pure speculation, I know.

Hey man, look at some of us around here. We have multiples of pretty near everything and given early 1930's prices, coupled with the salary of an international adventurer and college Professor, oh yeah! His closet was full of stuff!

David Morgan has been around long enough that he almost could have filled Indy's orders back then!

When the DVDs came out I studied a lot of the whip scenes in ROTLA. I brought that up a few months ago when I noticed Belloq already having his whip. One second before Belloq does not, so that's definitely a flick flub or blooper if you will. I see no reason for Belloq to take the whip either.
Back at his home when he's packing his suitcase, he throws in the whip and gun. The whip looks well broken in. That sure isn't a new whip. And a new gun too? Maybe... guns and whips.... now how many people on here have more than one gun and one whip?

Maybe Indiana Jones made his own bullwhips and twisted his own poppers? :D

One other thing is where the novels are concerned, if memory serves me right(can't verify at this time, lost all of my copies in a flooded basement and haven't replaced them), most if not all of the novels were actually prequals to Raiders(or Temple if you follow the timeline), and if I remember in some of them, he usually lost his whip, gun, or both at least once a book. So probably he eventually picked up a few spares along the way....

Indy also loses his whip in the truck dragging scene in Raiders. He hooks it to the bottom of the truck and climbs onto the truck with it, but as he's climbing on, you see it on the road below. It's also possible the whip stayed attached through the rest of the chase and Indy collected it later. What do you guys think?

After that scene indy didnt hang his whip which means he left it maybe attached on the truck, you just have to find who took it!??!

The whip was definately still attached to the truck when it pulls into the hiding place. I would assume Indy would have picked it back up. In any case, he definately left it on Katangas boat (along with his jacket and hat). I like to think that Katanga mailed them back to Indy when he got into port.

Well I don't know about you guys, but how many shoes do you own?
The same probably goes with Indy and his gear... As far as in the Raiders Novel, Indy loses his whip to the Submarine periscope, and mourns the loss of his hat somewhere in the novel too. He attributes this as the sad parting of old friends. That is a neat theory though about Belloq giving him his stuff back, but Belloq probably isn't that nice. I would think Belloq has a trophy collection of the things he has gotten off his enemies which he wouldn't sell in Marrakesh. " Surely everything you possess I can take away, and to think you thought I had given up..." Belloq.
