Hey John: Yesterday, I was running errands with 'your Crusader' (Excuse me: My Crusader) and we were experiencing very high winds. I went into a local shoe shop to purchase a pair of laces for some boots of mine, and the first thing the clerk said was: "Better hang on to that hat...it's a beaut!" I responded: "Yeah, good point, but I am not too concerned about it blowing off, as it fits perfectly." Well, as I left the shop, the wind kicked up a bit harder and by the time I got to my car I looked in the review mirror to note that 'it' was now a very 'wonkey' hat -- brim was going in all directions -- just like some of 'Indy's' in the flicks! I thought to myself -- 'Wow, this is really cool...looks like the real deal, right out the films, especially CS!' Then, with a quick 'swoosh' my baby was right back in order. No, fancy work...just a quick slide around! Good stuff here! This thing is stunning, at best! Thank you, again! And, I repeat, no one does an 'LC' better then you! W>

John (BendingOak) is correct, Deborah Nadoolman (now with Landis on the end there) picked a style from HJ's catalog/offerings and had them modify it to a certain style, one they did not offer at the time. It was a special Brazilian rabbit felt that has not been duplicated/sourced since. If you notice watching all four movies the bash and turn are not as distinct as Raiders and Crystal Skull, to be honest the hats in the middle movies change from scene to scene LC being, I feel, the poorest. Don't get me wrong the bash and turn for LC is for a nice hat but it is soo inconsistent through out the movie. The TOD fedora looks correct from the side but has a pinch that doesn't stay and is quite vague, my opinion. No offense to TOD and LC fans of these hats, the hero (if you want) fedoras are nice but when you pay attention to details John makes a better product than HJ did back then, the worst hat HJ made was the LC fedora... almost like they didn't care, in some scenes it looks as though he picked his hat from a rack. :TOH:

A little harsh, micsteam, but in the end, I agree with every word. Seriously. I may be speculating here, but I think we're about to get an offering from John that folks haven't seen. Sorta like in 30 years, I mean, if ever.

But I don't know. I should profess I'm a relative novice to hats and hat history, but either way, I think we're about see something new, boys and girls. Stomp your boot on the clutch pedal, and pull the gear shift handle down into second. We've got scores to settle. :|

Agreed in all areas of both posts, however even with the oddity of the 'hats' changing so many times -- the basic conceptual idea of the 'LC' stuck a strong chord, as least it certainly did for me. The best looking scenes of the 'LC' hat to me where -- 'Venus Pier,' 'Arrival at the castle and first entry looking for dad's room,' and then the motor cycle chase scenes. Yeah...the concept was there and solid -- but some of the hats were mucked up too much to allow for 'serious' continuity from scene-to-scene. Of coarse I could make the same argument regarding 'Raiders' too -- as to me, after 'The Streets of Cairo' scenes the hat seems to make a most remarkable transformation back to the hat seen prior too. Very strange continuity. One of the biggest concerns regarding film making is 'continuity' -- making certain that 'all things' match forward in the process of everything that has occurred before. Thus, once in 'Cairo' the hat should have remained 'Cairo,' in styling! However, I will negate this only because the whole idea of 'ROTLA' was to make the Best 'B' picture ever made -- thus the 'fast and dirty shooting! And, Wow! 'The Big Three' -- if you will, really did pull this off to the 'T'! W>

I didn't mean to offend anybody's particular taste in which style fedora/hat in the middle movies, it's not the style/pinch/bash what have you I am only pointing out the defects of the felt and manufacturing HJ was using at the time. Yes I agree with you WConly about Raiders but the differences were in how the brim was worn but the crown was consistent through out the movie, LC pinch was all over the place, much worse than TOD. You can even see in pr shots for the media at the time LC came out that some of the hats looked awkward. I agree with the scenes you pick out in LC where the fedora looked best, my personal favorite was Venice pier. I am with all of you on that I am eagerly awaiting to see John's new felts both the beaver belly and the rabbit !!! :TOH:

I don't think directors are worried about how a pinch looks on a hat. In a production there are much bigger fish to fry. I look at it this way. In those movies Indy was constantly getting smashed up and the hat was along for the ride. I doubt the character of IJ would say "hey willy, wait up I need to adjust my bash". I think the inconsistency of the bashes is what makes the movies that much more realistic. It happens when you wear the hat aside from just costuming. I wear mine in the mountains, on the prairie, in driving snow storms. Sure maybe an adjustment if I take it off but my point is the way Indy was using his hat, it is expected for it to get messy. I think a degree of criticism is great but if we look at it realistically, the hats getting unkempt and having the bashes look sloppy is par for the course.

Thats just the way I look at it. YMMV. I too eagerly await Johns new hats as I am on the verge of placing an order!

If it was nothing more than a continuous change from looking new to looking beqt to death that would be okay. The minor irritation in the continuity stuff is when the thing goes from tapered and crushed in one scene to looking like we took 3 weeks off and sent it out to be reblocked in the next.

It's kind of like the car chase scenes where one car shoves another car off the road and side damage is evident and then they turn the corner and the car has miraculously been through a restoration. (Or years ago when hubcaps would come off and then miraculously reappear ) Makes me wonder what the continuity people actually do.

Yea I have the same thoughts about continuity people. And it seems like in the last ten years it has only gotten worse!

I'm not talking about continuity I'm talking about the quality of the actual hat in each of the movies. I have a Steve Delk AB Raiders and and I wear it all the time and beat the heck out of it and outside of having to play with the brim a bit because of use it holds it's shape and pinch. My point isn't about the finicky details of how the hat was in particular scenes but how the actual hat holds up under duress during filming.

Oh ok. Well I definitely see your point now. And I agree with you. It seems the Raiders hat did really hold up better. Do we know how many of each movie hat were ordered for each film? Half of me wishes the Raiders hat was used in all THEEE Indiana Jones movies, but the other half likes the change. I feel like once I get my LC hat I'll still reach for my Raiders more just because it is my favorite movie hat. But I plan to order a Penman LC shaped like either the Venice Pier or motorcycle chase. Gotta watch again though to narrow it down.

Well there's several reasons why the hat was different in each of the movies ( moderators, John permit me here). First of all, the hatter for the first three movies was Herbert Johnson ( they did Raiders, TOD, and Crusade with a few Stetson's in there on TOD and Crusade so Stetson could say they made hats for the movies) but the felt wasn't always the same in each movie and that's the real trick. I personally beleive that Nadoolman (costume decorator for Raiders)was the key factor in the style of the Raiders fedora but the felt Herbert Johnson was using was a Brazilian rabbit fur felt that has not been available since '80/'81 and no one knows where they got it from nor can source it. For TOD and Crusade Herbert Johnson did not have access to the prior's felt and used the best felt at the time but also there was a preference for a more relaxed pinch in the crown by costuming/production what have you. Now with that back story, do I like the Crusade fedora ?? Yes, it's not my first choice but it is a very nice hat and in certain scenes it is very sharp with a big "tip of the hat " (no pun intended) to the Raiders fedora. Because of the lack of quality felt for the Crusade hat it constantly needed to be shaped and played with from scene to scene to give it an Indiana Jones look but it could not hold a pinch nor brim hold a turn. The scenes most of us like the best for how the fedora looked was because the hat had to be played with just for that shot, in some instances. John (penmanhats.com) uses better felt than what was available to " HJ" at the time and will make you a fedora in any scene of the movie and it will keep that shape and you will be very pleased. Well, if long winded has a name ... it must be... micsteam !!! Lol !! :TOH:

your on the right track. The raiders were more of a custom job, as the next two movies appear to be their stock offering. The lack of the Turn and the crease wasn't due to the felt but the desire of the big two running the show.

Im guessing big two is GL and SP. Figures, they have some odd judgements at times. I often wonder if GL is a big drinker. Maybe he spent too much time on Tatooine in that bar.

Beautiful little promo. Really. Wow. And something that is well known out here but I forget - is your CS block the Steve movie block or your interpretation?

It's all gorgeous. Me, I'm with 3 Penman hats now and only one head.

I might grow another head though when that Raiders rabbit comes out...

According to a post written by Steve on John's website, the block is a copy of his own. Also, Steve has taught John certain secret methods that make replicating the CS fedora harder.

Ok! Gotta tell you -- it was one of those day's at my Part-time job! Problems from word go, starting at 6:00 a.m. and getting off a bit before 14:00! Long story and truthfully -- boring, but what do I find when I get to my car and open my cell phone? A message alert. So, I check it. And, whom was it from? Think! This isn't difficult. What section of the forum am I posting on? It was Mr. Penman, himself with a quick question about finishing my 'Train' hat. Did I call him back? You better believe I did and I was so pleased that my hat was near completion and will be shipped Monday! What a wonderful surprise and what an incredible gratitude I have for John. He is truly professional in all regards -- not just his beautiful-beyond-word hats, but in the way he really digs in for all of us who purchase from him. What a great stress-reliever this phone call was -- it truly made my day -- heck, maybe my week! Thank you John. Look forward to calling you back next week and telling you how great this new one is ;) ! Thanks, again :TOH: ! W>

Guys we need a voice thing on our smiley icons and one of them needs to be Arnold Schwarzenegger' s voice saying "you must post pics to this thread!"

All the Indy offerings on my site with the Penman logo are made from my blocks ( my interpretation). The AB legacy is another story. Right now the first hat is a Raiders with the light weight rabbit felt. It's a different offering from Penman Raiders offering.

Penman Raiders will be made on my Raiders block using both my Currant rabbit and beaver felt. Can be made in any of the current colors.

AB legacy will be offered in the light weight rabbit only and only Indy the Indy brown.

Some time in the future others will be added. For example Steve's CS hero hat in beaver ( brown only) and Steve's grey travel hat ( granite only). Using Steve's CS blocks and technique and AB parts. These AB CS hats will not be offered until Steve retires from hat making as not to compete with each other. The reason why I will offer the Raiders as it a offering that Steve isn't offering.

I hope that clears things up a little.

So this is what the new light weight rabbit will be called, it'll be under the AB name, not the Penman, :-k
sounds interesting, any news on when. And pricing. You knew someone was going to ask :-

Yes, this new felt will be only Indy brown and for AB legacy only.

As for when, soon. I'm waiting for one more item to be in my hands before I can put it on the site for sale.
