Has anyone here ACTUALLY SEEN the real deal costume?

Bags, Boots, Shirts and all other gear should be discussed here.

Has anyone here ACTUALLY SEEN the real deal costume?

Post by mojoturbo »

You know costumes go on tour or end up on display at museums or movie theaters?

Has anyone here ACTUALLY SEEN the real deal costume?

I'd have questions for you if you did.... deep serious... psychological.... questions.

I saw a display at the Smithsonian Institute's American History Museum in D.C. I can't remember which film the gear was from since it was when I was in high school but it was pretty cool.

well my questions would be in regarding to weathering...

For the most part, Indy's costume doesn't look frayed. In other words, usually the cuffs of pants and shirt sleeves get torn or worn - but Indy seems to be able to wear his shirt and pants for dressier occasions which leads me to believe his clothes are in good shape.

His hat and coat seem the most distressed.

What do you remember seeing as far as wear and tear on the shirt and pants?

If you do alittle searching you will find alot of topics ont he real deal costume. Many people in here have worn several pieces of it. Mainly TofD and LC. The raiders jacket was only seen by the late Tony Nowak. When I talked to him he said the jacket was torn to pieces.

Do a search on Noel Howard.

Don't forget these costumes were made for each movie, my favorite of the 4 movies was Raiders and the costume designer was Deborah Nadoolman (she's married to John Landis ie. American Werewolf in Londond etc. fame), and I can tell you that each movie had different costumers, suppliers, and different techniques as to distressing their costumes . The stuff in D.C. at the Smithsonian is from Last Crusade. Unless you speak to direct collectors there's only a few select places to see/view actual stuff, if I am wrong or if I left something out... I stand corrected... hey.. please tell me we are all in the same boat, we want information or vids or whatever !!! Hope this helps. :TOH:

In person it seemed that all of the weathering was very topical. Jackets had been sandpapered here and there. Hats had been creased and done up in fullers earth. Pants looked pretty clean and shirts were just wrinkled. A lot of it was fullers earth I think. Some burnt umber acrylic paint or extra shoe polish on shoes - all that kind of thing. I do think that one of the jackets had been lightly spray painted with some beige/ gray type of paint.

Truly nothing too out of the ordinary. Some of the jackets looked new even but all of them were that very very light lamb skin in 1990.

wow, I was really hoping for pictures. I know when the Star Wars costumes went on tour, I took pictures. When I did Jack Sparrow a few years back - every time the costume is on display, someone somewhere takes a bunch of close up hi-res reference pictures.

But when I look for Indy shots - of the costume on display.... they are few an far between. Is that the case? Or am I just looking in the wrong places? THANKS :CR:

Well, the IJ costumes definitely have not gotten the road shows the Star Wars costumes have. Another indication FLF doesn't consider the IJ franchise as profitable. And frankly, LFL is correct. But I digress.

The kicker is when the IJ costume has gone on display it is generally a hybrid of different movies though almost always touted as ROLA gear.

Here's one recent-ish thread that has links to some pictures and other threads. http://indygear.com/cow/viewtopic.php?f ... t=victoria" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There are pictures of real costume pieces scattered through the forum, but it'll take some hunting to find them.

Interesting.
I've read here on COW, many times for many years, that the LC jacket was made out of a very heavy/thick lambskin.
That statement came from members who supposedly saw/handled the actual LC Hero jacket.
In fact many had ordered their LC jackets in heavy skins (even thick cowhide, CS kind), based on that statement.
I've never saw a lambskin that heavy/thick.

Have you seen my ribby lamb hero? That is one heavyweight lamb.

When I say very light I mean that I was expecting a leather jacket like biker or A2 flight jacket - that kind of thing. Compared to cow hide, lamb skin does feel like a chamois. It was pretty shocking at first. But I just mean lamb skin - not light lamb skin as opposed to heavy lamb skin. But they were all lamb for LC. I looked through about 8 of them hanging up. I was mainly focused on the hats though and they were straight up HJ hats.

Have not seen that. But what is "ribby"? Just curious. But those LC jackets were just straight up lamb skin. Nothing struck me as heavyweight. I can recall too when Lee Keppler first got an Indy jacket from England decades ago almost and his first response is that he felt he could tear it apart with his own hands. Weird, huh?! But it looks heavier on film. I guess that's the key, huh...

Merino is the breed of lamb that has a genetic quirk that makes the skin grow in ridges, this is called ribby when seen in the skins.

This gives the dot dot dash effect we see on the Raiders jacket right chest, and particularly in that shot of him hiding in front of the flying wing. Though it can be seen in a lot of the rest of Raiders.

It seems to be slightly apparent on the sleeves of the ToD jacket but I have not noticed it on the LC jacket.

I know the grainiest lambskin can be thick. The Wested's CRISPE it is too.
But I meant smooth ones, like seen on LC jacket.

I don't know...I'm just amateur on the leather industry.
Maybe it was thick. I just don't believe it was. At least not thicker than ToD jacket.

I've been wondering that. Perhaps it's a rope used to keep the pants up? But then it wouldn't make sense to have the web belt. :-k

WOO HOO! Now I have seen the real deal costume (or as close to it as I ever will) I am sure the outfit on tour is a touring piece made up of stunt and double items, but it's still pretty cool.
