Sorry I have been so rare these days. Life has been keeping me pretty busy.

Anyways, I received my latest Penman several months ago and have been keeping it a secret. I wanted to get it broken in a little before posting photos of it. Trouble is- well, it's a Penman. If I waited until it looked well used I would be dead.

The hat does look great. I read back through this thread to find Nick's first mention of the hat.

So...

It's a western style.
Made in western grade felt.
It's from a movie.

It has shades of the MWNN hat, but not quite.

Do tell, more details and other picture angles.

Nick asked for a hat that looked like the one from the 3rd movie of back to the future but with a darker brown color. Which is close to the man with no name hat. The difference between the two is the hat band, the edge treatment. It's simply a western porkpie with a 1 inch ribbon.

Looks like the crown is a little lower too.

What's the brim width? And is it rabbit or beaver?

It's western rabbit but the crown heights of both hats are the same. Brim specs I would have to be at my shop to tell you exactly what it was.

Have you made many hats with "Western" weight fur? Sounds interesting!!!!

And while this one is rabbit have you tried it with beaver?

Me, I don't know if it's a matter of just thicker fur or more starch or both. Wonderful stuff.

Hmm, I'd be interested in what the overall measurements are. The dimensions seem bigger in this picture.

Maybe it's that Nick is a bigger guy than MJF.

Nick is a much bigger gut then MJF. As for crown shape, the hat in the film is distressed and Nicks is new. I would have to destress Nicks hat to get to look more mushroom like. Remember Nick asked for a hat like the one from MJF work in Back to the Future 3. The color isn't the same and I didn't distress it.

I have made several western hats, I don't show them off much because that's not what I really want to do but if a customer ask and I can make it for them I will. I have made in campaign hats, cattlemen hats, and of course porkpie like the one Nick has.

Well the BTTF hat is a flat top crown too, no? There is a western block for that very apparent reverse taper.

Very cool. I'm all set over here on my Western hats but wondering too, John, if your Western hats are thicker and stiffer (if left up to you) or same thickness/ stiffness as a Raiders hat or whatever.

Some Western hats are obviously like pieces of dang wood. The better places, like Rands and O'Farrell, say that this is so that it doesn't start to droop in the rain.

Or so I was told.

All curiosity and dead cats over here.

Hard to say completly with just that photo but yes in this case it's the block. In the case of the BTTF hat was to be like the man with no name hat which is a straight sided hat and was heavenly distressed.

I have both blocks so either route I want or either hat I can make.

Most people haven't seen the range of hats I have made. Mostly have seen my Indy hats. One, this is indygear and on TFL, well to be honest I'm not permitted to show my hats.

I have access to western felt as well as my dress weight felt that I use for my Indy hats and my non Indy fedoras.

It's A heavier felt for sure but I'm not sure how heavier and it is has a lot more stiffener.

My Western hat over here I have is the "Gus" hat from Lonesome Dove. I know that a lot of people produce one but I got it from the people with the block/ did it for Robert Duvall, etc. Very nice.

Nick, I've been thinking about getting a BTTF hat for a while. Nice to see it getting some love here.

I wears in Disney World this past weekend celebrating both my niece's first birthday and our anniversary with my wife. My Penman Raiders hat, now four years old, is my favorite travel hat. I don't vacation without it. So naturally I have some pictures to show off. None really show off how well the hat has held up over the years but are cool to see how the color has faded.

Meeting the Mouse

Belle and Beast looked so happy in that stained glass window that we wanted to look argumentative in this one. This one actually does show off the classic Raiders profile shape.

Outside the new Be Our Guest restaurant. Don't mind the gut here.

Confusing my niece for a turkey leg.

She ended up winning that round.

Nick, I like the slight pinch you put in the front. Marty didn't have it in BTTF, but Clint did in MWNN. Great way to bring the two hat together. I did the same with my MWNN-esque hat I got from Peters Brothers.

Dave, your niece looks like, "You bite my leg, I'm gonna punch you right in the jawbone!"

John just reblocked and re-ribboned my Fedora Chronicles Electric Speakeasy Hat. Now, it's . . . well, it's not that. It's just a Rabbit Pecan Penman with a plum maroon ribbon.

As far as the "BIG MAJOR RAIDERS PROJECT" is going, I hope it is going well.

We're so very curious if I may speak for more than myself.

Myself, I just got my first two Penman's in the last few months and they are wonderful. A Raiders and a Train (in charcoal instead of granite). Dead on stuff. Really wonderful.

Nice!!! That will be very cool to see, John. Can't wait for the first pics. I am overwhelmingly happy with the hats I have from you thus far, very content, but it will be more than fun to see what the new stuff looks like.

Funny, I did get to handle an HJ YIJ hat and, apart from the wider brim and ribbon, the "look" can be approached by many a current owner by "opening" the crown at the rear (taking out the deeper crease) and gently lowering the front. Just saying this in case folks want a hint of how it will seem.

There is of course no way to widen the brim on a regular IJ hat but the crown was in some ways simply more "western" in its bashing.

All of this is going to look great and your new Raiders rabbit is going to be the holy grail in many respects I think.

Out of all the amazing Penman Hats.... I've decided that I LOVE this one. "The Penman" is my all time favorite. It's probably goingto be my next fedora acquisition...
John, might I ask what felt is used for this one? The colouring and felt make the creases on the center dent have an amazing look that I don't see on other colours /felts of "The Penman"

You know, I have been meaning to mention this for a long time, yet keep forgetting to do so -- to me (cover your ears Mickey Spillane) but, this hat, to me, is 'the hat' Mike Hammer would wear -- not a pork pie! This just screams 'everyman,' and yet -- someone to notice, at the same time. I too like this one. Nope. It's not the lighting.

I ordered one just like that a couple of years ago. It looks that good no matter what the lighting is.

I suspect it even looks that good in the dark.
