Denim material could be OK, the key is the weight. As Michaelson has said in this and other threads about cloth jacket offerings, the previous version of these jackets were so heavy they were just as warm as wearing leather. No real incentive to have a cloth jacket style if the seasons for wearing completely overlap with leather jackets.

I liked the idea of the microfiber for the light weight/breathability. I'd be open to denim as well, but not if it was going to be just as heavy as my current Wested.

Around January, Wested did a project for me and I asked about it at that time. I had already paid them money. Rebecca said they were having trouble sourcing the right fabric. I thought the proto looked fine?

A windbreaker type material would have put it over the top in my opinion.

Then again, I don't need every jacket in my closet to be based on the same pattern. I have a couple of great jackets (Magnoli Quantum of Solace, Triumph Lancaster and a J.Crew as featured on 24 to name a few) that fill the light weight category for me rather nicely. And allow my love of other film jackets to be indulged.

Understood, but the ORIGINAL point of this jacket to even exist was to allow travelers to own an Indy patterned jacket that could be worn on the road, tossed in a washing machine when needed, then worn again. This was a project that started at Indyfan, moving onto Indygear.com in 2002, and thus a jacket members in the hobby wanted.

There were a LOT of folks (and still are) that want an Indy jacket for summer travel that's cool enough to wear in the summer time and can be layered should it get a little cool. Leather isn't it.

To date that hasn't really occurred, as everything we've seen/received from either Wested or USW were either dry clean only, or too heavy a material to wash and wear. This microfiber version would have been weather/stain resistant, but also quickly machine washed and worn.

It could have been rolled up in a duffle bag like a wind breaker.

The first iteration developed after Indygear was formed and was the twill material that had to be dry cleaned. I still own (and wear) the prototype. It was close....but not exactly what we were hoping for. The weight was right, but the convenience for a traveler was just not there. It's great for travel, but has to be treated like a dress jacket for cleaning.

This microfiber version would have been perfect.

I don't recall what they cost, but I guess I was thinking they were meant as a more affordable entry into the Indy jacket, not so much a mild weather option.

Yeah, that second round went that direction. The entire original idea seemed to get lost in the shuffle, as did the interest of the folks who were pushing for the original idea of a light weight, washable cloth Indy travel jacket. They didn't NEED an 'entry' level jacket. The lambskin version served that purpose.

There are so many great jackets available in the lightweight stuff, maybe it doesn't make a lot of sense. But I really do like the Indy style jacket, and I think it translates well into cloth, even if it is a little 'plain' in that form. I'd be hoping for the brown, as well as khaki and olive drab.

I like the idea of the lightness of the material, and having something suitable for a little rain, as well as an Indy jacket that wouldn't look too odd in summertime if you got caught in a sudden weather change, or if you happen to have on a pair of Bermudas.

I had mentioned it to Gemma before she left, but she didn't seem to know anything about it. Maybe it was just something Peter was throwing our way, but then he suddenly got very busy and it took a back seat.

Should we bother him with it, or is the answer already too obvious that it's probably not going to happen?

I think the micro-fiber jacket would be great for the fall. My first Indy jacket was Wested's cotton offering back in 2007. It was a good jacket but I think the micro-fiber would be a lot better looking.

Agreed, Tex. He carried both the twill and denim as stock offerings back then, but they were dropped. What he didn't seem to understand was it wasn't because fans weren't interested....it was because the materials used weren't what the fans were looking for.

So, I'm sure he'd still do them as 'bespoke' projects if someone ordered one, but as a stock item? I think that train left the station a while back, as bad as I hate to admit it.

Interest comes and goes with the seasons, just like interest in straw Indy fedoras.

The last time Peter and I talked about this (last year, as a matter of fact), I told him I was still wearing the prototype twill. It's color has faded, but it's still my summer 'grab' when a light jacket is required, as does my wife hers. He laughed, saying he should have made them less durable. He could have sold more.

I agree, it would absolutely be seasonal for me. Mainly, a cool, Indy-style rain jacket is essentially what I'd like it to be, for warm weather. A windbreaker, essentially. As has been mentioned, some of the thinner lamb jackets actually seem lighter than the cotton Westeds. I've got the brown denim and the later 'drill' with the satin sleeves, and they're actually pretty warm jackets in the autumn.
