Leather fall keeps breaking [resolved]

Post by ABMann »

Hi folks,

The leather fall on my whip keeps breaking in use. I'll be practicing something like the fast figure-eight in a completely open field and the cracker will go flying with a piece of the fall.

Details:
Kangaroo leather fall. Tapered. Looks like it is full grain as there is still fur on it.
10 foot whip
Poly cracker
Clear field, not catching on any twigs or trees.

Any idea what could be causing it? I'm considering switching the fall out for nylon if this keeps happening. Or if/when the fall is completely gone....

You should get a fall made of whitehide or redhide or something like that. As long as they're greased every so often you won't have a problem with them breaking.

Cool beans. I'll order some from David Morgan's site.

Ditto Riku.

Are you putting a leather conditioner on it when it begins to get dry? If not, you'll destroy your fall really quick. Also, how new are you to whip cracking? Part of it may be unavoidable because your technique will be really rough if you aren't well seasoned.

I've had the whip a whopping two weeks so the fall is still well lubed. So... I do not suspect that is the issue. ;)
But, I will order some dressing along with the white/redhide fall in the coming weeks.

2 weeks? That's more than enough time to dry up a fall. I use Pecards every 2 practices. Granted our summers can be quite dry.

How often have you been using it?

Nigh daily. Guess I'll order some dressing sooner!

I contacted Bernie about it and he thinks there is an issue with the fall on that whip. he responded by sending me a bunch of whitehide falls.

Great customer service! Now just to start saving for my next EM whip. :)
