For the overhead crack, then, I would say, that you should be able to see the whip coming around your right shoulder (provided you are right handed) before you reverse the direction to crack it. I start my sidearm with the whip behind me and as long as I'm focused, I can get a decent crack with no collateral damage. Maybe I rushed it and/or let my mind wander.
