KotCS Travel Bash vs Adventure Bash?
So I'm just curious... Does anyone know if there's a difference in the bashing of the train fedora vs the regular, brown adventure fedora that Indy sports in KotCS? Just curious, as they look pretty identical to me, and I don't think this has been brought up before?

Re: KotCS Travel Bash vs Adventure Bash?
So far as I remember, Steve and Marc made the travel hats to the same specs as the brown ones and all were bashed the same.
That being said, I'm sure there are nuances between the grey and brown hats due the the amount of use any one hat got and multiple versions of each hat used in filming.

Indiana Jeff

Re: KotCS Travel Bash vs Adventure Bash?
As I recall reading, the train travel hat is on a 5 3/4 open crown block whereas most of the adventure hats are on a 5 1/2 inch block. Although a 5 1/4 inch open crown block snuck in somehow.
Thanx!!!

"It seemed that Spielberg had a thing about a travel hat for Indy which dated back to the first film. When Indy travels, he's meant to wear a gray hat and would do so in the new film. Steven wanted it gray just like Raiders, but wanted it to look like when he climbs out the window in Last Crusade and is met by Donovan's thugs. I just wonder why he didn't have a gray hat when he traveled to Venice. The gray hat made for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was tall! Taller than the brown hats, having a 5 3/4" crown. They wanted it to have a different look than the brown hat. The brim is also larger at 2 7/8" by 2 5/8", but the creases are the same as on the brown." —Steve Delk

The block shapes are different, the brim and crown specs are different. Ribbon used are from two different makers. I have both the blocks from the movie.

John: I have a question that I have been meaning to ask for a long time...so here it is. Have you ever done the Travel hat in the 'Indy Brown?' I've always thought that would make a superb 'Indy-CS' hat! Thanks! W>BendingOak wrote:The block shapes are different, the brim and crown specs are different. Re: KotCS Travel Bash vs Adventure Bash?
It's been done before, and on many occasions.....for me.
The reason it's referred to as the 'Michaelson block' (first done by Steve Delk, not me), is because it is the block he always uses to block my hats, and has done so since he first started blocking hats and collecting vintage blocks. It was one of the first blocks he ever put in his collection.
At the time he was working on the CS hats, he and I were emailing back and forth about this travel hat situation, and he was in a quandry as to what block to use that would make it noticably different than the Hero CS brown fedora he and Marc and created.
I mentioned my favorite block, asking why he couldn't just use it as the style. The rest, as they say, is history.
So, I've had everything from moss green to sahari tan to brown fedoras made on the travel block for years, and they're great.
One point of irony for me was something discovered within the past 2 weeks. I was going through a footlocker that had been my late Dad's, and found a package of old black and white photos shot of him and my late brother taken back in 1951. In two of those pictures my Dad is wearing a wider brimmed fedora than I had ever personally seen him wear....definitely 'period correct'.
The irony? It was bashed in the shape of my favorite block....the CS travel block. Apparently I inherited my Dad's taste in hat styles and didn't even know it. As I said, I have never seen him in anything but the Mallory styled hat....and yet there he is in those photos wearing the CS travel hat bash in the early 1950's. It was a shock to see that.
Anyway, yes, the travel bash works beautifully in brown, and works better with a hair wider brim than the standard CS Hero hat. My moss green has a 3 inch brim, and with the extra height of the crown, the dimensions work perfectly to my eye.
JMO, of course.

I'm kind of glad I didn't inherit my Dad's taste in hats... (Cincinnati Reds cap) However, He has started inheriting my style (Brown fed IV Dlx, )Michaelson wrote:It's been done before, and on many occasions.....for me.

I must say Michaelson, I have always preferred the look of that particular block. Too bad it only gets a little bit of screen time in comparison with the hero fedora. I can see why it is your favorite block, but you must have been excited to see it on the big screen.
Like I said earlier, if I get another fedora, I am going with a brown Michaelson Travel hat.

I'll admit, it put a smile on my face when I saw it on his head while he was sitting on the train.shade88 wrote: I can see why it is your favorite block, but you must have been excited to see it on the big screen.

I (and many others here, I'm sure) smiled when Indy told his class to read "Michaelson..." It was merely the name of a textbook prior to KOTCS, but now it's a nod to one of IndyGear's illustrious pioneers! That must've been a particularly gratifying moment for you, sir.

If all you guys want is the travel hat only in brown. Why wouldn't you be able to do that? Color doesnt effect the out come at all.
Re: KotCS Travel Bash vs Adventure Bash?
Sorry for the confusion here John. That is exactly what I was referring to. Just wondering if it had been done before, that's all. I just like the block, brim, and overall styling of the hat a bit more then the actual CS adventure hat. I just has a bit more 'wow' to it, at least to me. I thought that the crown height on the gray one was a little bit shorter than the brown fedora.
Was'nt it?
