I don't believe you're right, Tex....I see gussets on that jacket in the 7th photo, and I'm not aware of G&B ever OFFERING an Expo without them.

Used ones pop up in the classified quite often. You could snag one there at a really good price if you're on the ball.
There are two there as of this writing, if they're your size, as a matter of fact.

I get to join the G&B club! New to me veg-tanned goat. Got this one from Indydawg after it's been back and forth among him, Michaelson and Mike over the years.
Not the best quality pictures, but I was working against fading light and with an eight year old for a photographer. No worries, though, with the years of service I'm going to get from this jacket, there will be plenty more opportunities for pictures.
Regards,
Indiana Jeff

Here you go Michael
I have had a few horsehide A2 jackets over the years and after a lot of research I pulled the trigger on this G&B Expedition goatskin jacket a couple of weeks ago. Couldn't be happier with it. Soft as butter, not too heavy and tough as nails. Darn comfy too.( I love the very functional gussets)
I'm 6'5" and 220lb and chose the size 46 tall. Fits perfectly.
I won't be artifically aging it................I'll let father time do that.
The hat is an Akubra Fed Deluxe that I've had for a while. Another superb product.

For those interested, here is my Gibson & Barnes Expedition in goat after 4 years of wear:
Here is the back:
Here's a close-up of the shoulder, which shows a few small spots of natural distressing on this chrome-tanned Expedition:
This is still my favorite jacket! Hope you found these of interest!

Re: Show us your Expeditions! / Any Distressed Expeditions?
Back in mid-October I purchased, from Gorak, a well-used Expedition, in goat skin, he had offered in the bazaar. It was used when he bought it, so I'm at least its third owner. Based on research around here I think it was Bogie1943's prior to Gorak. It was an old jacket, to be sure.
Body-wise the fit was pretty spot-on, I wet and rolled the sleeves out about 1/2 inch and I was good to go. The liner was worn through in some spots such as the collar area, and around the hem of the body. It also had some stitching that had popped around the handwarmer/patch pocket areas. Gorak had mentioned all this in the listing and had sent pics, so I wasn't too concerned. I was looking for a jacket to wear out in the wilds, so if I did scratch it up more, I wouldn't mind. The only drawback, once I got the jacket, was the popped stitches around the pockets; stuff either stuck out or fell out if I wasn't careful.
Out of curiosity, I dropped an inquiry to Gibson & Barnes about fixing the stitching. The thought process being, since they made the jacket, I'd be happiest if they were the ones who fixed it. (I didn't want tailor going nuts.) I got a response back from Drew, I believe same day, stating they could and would be happy to do the work. All I was to do was box it up and send it to Drew at G&B. So I did, along with a note highlighting the stitching's problem areas, I also asked about a zipper switch (from right to left-hand pull) along with a relining. After about a month and a half I got the jacket back; stitches all fixed, zipper switched, and new liner.
Over the long holiday weekend, I've given it a good going over with some Fiebing's Liquid Glycerine Saddle Soap, working it in with a sponge. It cleaned up nicely, and it softened up greatly. I then sprayed a couple coats of Lexol Conditioner, working each coat in with a sponge, then wearing it and stretching it into a more custom-fit.
When I said it was an old jacket, Drew at G&B backed me up. On one of the calls where he had called me to check on how I wanted to proceed with things, I asked him about the age of the jacket; he said they figured it was 10-15 years old. So yeah, these things will hold up. Don't be afraid to buy used.
Also, If you get one of these as a used jacket and it needs something fixed, please do not hesitate to drop G&B a line for your repairs. Totally worth it. The price I paid for all I mentioned was, in my eyes, minimal.
Very. Minimal.
I'll have some pics in the next few days and I'll edit this with those.

Best looking expo ive ever seen!!!! Wow!!
Re: Show us your Expeditions! / Any Distressed Expeditions?
Here is mine. I had direction from the good Dr. Nebraska on snap placement (thank you Sir!). They are Prym 15mm antiqued brass snaps. I also put a custom name tape on the inside pocket. The tape matched the liner perfectly and I chose khaki for my name. I chose G&B in goat due to the excellent reviews you gents have presented, I don't trust myself to order custom clothing from overseas, and GB is only 2 hours away from me. Without further ado....

Last rifle looks like a Mosin-Nagant model 1944 7.62x54RR.
Nice looking Expo. G&B installed snaps for me, and they sure work great when it's windy.
VERY nice jacket. Wear it well.

Re: Show us your Expeditions! / Any Distressed Expeditions?
It's a 1903 Springfield Michaelson. It has an original barrel from 1918 . Thank you for the kind words! I wanted to add the snaps so it would have that LC vibe and like you said, block out the wind. And yes, I wear it whenever I can!

A 1903, eh? Boy, you can sure see where Mosin got their ideas for making THEIR model .....but then Winchester had a had it it's creation too, so there's a lot of USA engineering involved in those old Russian models.

Re: Show us your Expeditions! / Any Distressed Expeditions?
Those Mosins are the model of 91/30 M. Unless we speak of the fireball producing M44. But as far as longevity, the Russians beat us with the Mosin. DOH! But I'll take a Springfield any day.Michaelson wrote:A 1903, eh? WDW.
Oh, you won't have to worry about the snap. They don't come with one unless you specificially ASK for one to be installed.

Annual pass holders here at Disney Anaheim. I live close enough to hear the fireworks rattle my windows. For me, Trader Sam's is the best place for a cold one outside of the islands! Back to the jacket. @ micsteam, I added those snaps because A) I wanted to, and B) I love LC. Is it SA? Nope, but I really wanted a G&B and decided I would make it mine, my own, my........precious.... If anyone is in OC and going to Disney, feel free to hit me up and if I'm off shift, I'll grab the fam and go!

M, I think I need to lose a few pounds myself (right before Thanksgiving??) because my jacket is starting to feel a bit tight. Congrats on your weight loss, sir!Michaelson wrote:Wearing my 2002 Expo lambskin today and loving it! Well, I have a few naturally sunlit photos from 2012 of my naturally-distressed Expo. After owning & wearing a variety of Expedition leathers like lambskin, deerskin (thank you Indydawg), and a chromed goatskin -- I decided to stick with cowhide. I believe I purchased this jacket from G&B back in 2003, might have been Flightsuits back then. Anyway, here are the links ...

Joe!!!! DUUUUDE! How the heck have you been, man?!?! It's been since...well, since 2003-when you came by the house with your Expo and we did side by side pics with ours...mine was the lighter russet cowhide, if you'll remember...man, wish I still had THAT jacket (you hush, Michaelson...I don't want to hear any "I told you so's from you ).
I'm glad to see you've still got yours! She's lookin' good! I guess you've let the others go over the years? I remember that deerskin Expo, too...she was amazing! You don't still happen to have that one, do you?
Jeff here has the goatskin I owned...then didn't...then did again....then didn't....then did again... ...well-travelled jacket, that one!
Anywho...drop me a line sometime...it would be fun to catch up!
Later, man!

Re: Show us your Expeditions! / Any Distressed Expeditions?
It's taken me over a year and a half, but here's my Expedition, in goat. Inside shots, I know, but I had a little time before all the natural light died, but I got some photos.
I got this jacket via the bazaar back in 2013. I know I'm at least the third member to have owned it.
When I purchased it, it needed some repair work, so I sent it back to G&B. They relined it, fixed any loose/missing stitching, and switched the zipper to left-hand pull for me. After all that, I think I've worn it 2-3 times.
Being goat hide, and it's good weight (3 lbs, 8 oz.) I wanted to make it a woods-wear jacket, but I just don't get to wear it like I thought I would. I've posted it in the bazaar (again) because honestly, I'd like to see it get some more mileage from someone here.

When I purchased it, it needed some repair work, so I sent it back to G&B. They relined it, fixed any loose/missing stitching, and switched the zipper to left-hand pull for me. After all that, I think I've worn it 2-3 times.

Re: Show us your Expeditions! / Any Distressed Expeditions?
Based on the pattern? Have they changed the pattern, other than the way they construct the pockets?

However, since the relining/repair work, I'm pretty sure it has a lot of life left in it.

No clue.
Other than it had no internal pocket, the zipper was a right-hand pull, and I guess the pocket shape.
Maybe there's something internally different. I'm not the expert on these at all, just relaying what I was told by the G&B staff.

That was definitely made as a custom creation for someone,as they've always had left hand pull zips and an inside pocket. I own a prototype lambskin and goatskin Expo, and had one of the original deerskin Expo's they tried but decided to pull fro the market. I wouldn't use that one as example of an old pattern.

The G&B is still a fine jacket and probably the best made and engineered of all Indy jackets. I had mine cut down recently. It was marked 44, and measured 28" at the pits, so plenty of room. Now it is a much better fit.

I guess? This is why I'm fearful to share anything I'm told regarding this stuff, especially by those who are making/selling the gear. There's frequently a strong counterpoint and things get ugly.
I'm going to go back and edit my earlier post because I'm not going to get this locked down spreading questionable information.
And yes, the jacket is very well-built and is a great investment, especially with its lifetime warranty on stitching and zipper.
