Differences between Vintage 80's HJ's felt & Modern HJ felt
Hi guys i was wondering if anyone has comparison pics between the Vintage hj felt around the era of TOD and LC made by Swales, and modern hj felt made by Manning and how does the color looks. And i also wonder what other indy hat would closely resemble the 80's TOD and LC era felt vintage hj felt, i know for sure that adventurebilt, and penman is the closest probably. Thanks in advance.

I wish a COWer would get a Bates Indi to see how it measures up. Judging by the picture on the website, the block looks reasonably straight (though that quarter profile angle is the worst for judging the overall taper of a crown though).
Are you strictly asking about color, or also about thickness?

Hi im mostly asking about the color, and which hat brand is most color screen accurate to ToD and LC. Btw Not sure if the Bates Indi is actually a Herbert Johnson but it looks more like it's style LC rather than Raiders.jlee562 wrote:I wish a COWer would get a Bates Indi to see how it measures up. Well, no, it's not an HJ, it's a Bates.
The felt that Penman and AB use is slightly darker than the screen used felts.
I think that the Christy's Sable is quite close.

They are different kinds of Christy's dark brown; sable, light sable, & cork sable. Not sure if those colours are availiable today. I heard a new website sells them- tailandtheunexpected website.

Right, that's why I said Sable and not light sable, or cork sable.LouisiannaJames26 wrote:They are different kinds of Christy's dark brown; sable, light sable, & cork sable. Not sure if those colours are availiable today. I heard a new website sells them- tailandtheunexpected website.

Penman and AB both uses the same felt right, and as soon as the AB or Penman's rabbit felt fade, the color becomes light and may look like the Vintage HJs right? Just askin bro.

Steve was the one who picked the brown color for the felt knowing that all felt fade during the first year. This way your hat won't be very SA right out of the box but will be for the long run. As for some like the HJs that it will be more SA right out of the box but will fade to be too light for the long run.
