Hat size not sizing! Which is largest?
Ok so I've hundreds of threads searching for this info but honestly it's hard to find. Maybe I am not searching for the right terms I don't know, I am usually good at this stuff...
So the question. I know there are those that want an Indy hat that is movie perfect from the brim size to the bash to the asymmetrical aspects. This is not what I am looking for. I want to do an Indy costume and I want to look the part. I am 6'-2" and 230 lbs with broad shoulder and a solid build.(see my pic as Jayne Cobb below) So this being said if I get a standard sized hat then it's going to look like a little hat on my head. I've seen a few pic on here where the hat alone looks great but on the person it looks like the brim is to small simply because the person in the pic is a big guy. I'd rather have a hat that is a little more proportionate to my body, head and frame.
I am looking for ROTLA version. So I am pleading to those that have multiple hats ... are there any out there with a little more scale to them? or maybe I am not finding this because all of them ARE scaled to the head size. I own two Stetsons one is a 58 and one is a 59.
Thanks in advance for any knowledge... I know from being on other boards it's sometimes tough to deal with us newbs. Some of you have been looking at and owning these for years and years now I bow to your vast knowledge and thank you for any insights.

Your best bet is to have one made.
You and I are the same size and weight, and I've found my best hat considering hat to body ratio has been an AB I own with a brim dimensional cut of 3" front and back, 2 1/2" sides, and crown height of 5 1/4".
Get one custom made, and you'll never look back at production models.
You being in Texas, check out Peters Brothers Hats in Ft. Worth! They've been around since 1917, run by the same family, and have made literally hundreds of hats for us.

Good for you for recognizing screen accurate specs are not going to work for you! Too often members want 'exactly what we see on screen' then wonder why their hat doesn't look right on them. You wouldn't buy a suit made to someone else's measurements and expect it to fit so why a hat?
I will second the Peters Brothers suggestion, but recommend calling rather than going through their website, especially if you want specific specs on you hat.
Another maker to check out is Garrison Hatter (member Local Land Surveyor). I have a couple of non-Indy hats from David. His work is great and turn-around times very reasonable.

Indiana Jeff

Better yet, if you find yourself in Ft. Worth, visit the shop and let Joe Peters measure you himself. It's a great trip, and a REALLY interesting shop. Really nice folks too.Indiana Jeff wrote:I will second the Peters Brothers suggestion, but recommend calling rather than going through their website, especially if you want specific specs on you hat.

I did when I was in town a few years back, and Joe treated me like I was family.

Bravo! There's a great coffee shop across the street from PB's too, so enjoy the day, and tell Joe that 'Michaelson' said 'Hello!'
He has a photo of me, my wife, Indiana Texas Girl, Joe and his late wife Nelda on the wall. Just plain nice folks to know and do business with.

Re: Hat size not sizing! Which is largest?
I think face and head shape are most definitely important factors, but in my opinion you also need to factor in height and weight. Too large a dimension hat on a short stocky body you end up looking like a fire hydrant. Tall thin person and small dimension ratio hat, you look like Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy fame.
Based on what you said on your height and weight, I agree with John.....any Indy hat would work....but, I still think a custom is the best route to go.
Lots of little things to consider..
That's why I suggested going directly to a hatmaker in your area and let him size you up in person. No second guessing your purchase.
Oh, and you may want to wait until next week to go to Ft. Worth. They will be wrapping up the Ft. Worth stock show on the 3rd of February, so they're a skeleton crew at the shop right now.

Well it looks like they are 12-15 weeks out for any custom hats right now. Since I am trying to get this ready for a March convention I think I am going to try and find something to hold me over then see Peters bros when I am out that way in March.
thanks for the help!

The timing might be too tight, but you could try Garrison Hatters (member Local Land Surveyor). Not in your neck of the woods to go meet with in person, but he makes a great hat and can customize the specs to meet your needs.
Or go with something in the short term and do the personal meet and greet thing with the folks at PB later in the spring.
One of my bucket list items is to venture out to meet up with all the hatters I've purchased from online.

Indiana Jeff

I was just searching the forum about sizing and came across this about Peter Brothers. Being I live in Ft. Worth, this is perfect, I can go there and have them size me right there for my order!
Getting ready to purchase my first ROTLA fedora to replace my IJ554 and have been nervous about getting the wrong size ordered.
(Self-measure, I'm a 23.5", but trying on various cowboy hats at the local Cavendar's it seems a 7 3/8 fit better (Even though charts say with a 23.5" I should be wearing a 7 1/2 - which feels too big/loose) It gets a bit confusing )
Anyone have a PB already? I'm curious how these are.
