Raiders Side Straps...Over or Under?

Post by JohnNdy »

I recall that in Pattersons screen-used jacket observations he noted that the side straps go UNDER the seams closest to the hand-warmer slits - as opposed to over the seams and sewn on the outside of the jacket like in today's Westeds.

I have been scouring my Raiders DVD and find that I really can't tell whether they go over or under the jacket seam next to the pockets. In some frame grabs, they look as if they go under, in some, over. Anybody know which was used?

Under the seam is how it was made for the film, this has changed during recent production. Due to the fact the leather strap would eventual pull out of the single stiched seam on the side. A new X stiching was used on the leatherstrap ouside now for more strength.

On my new wested i ordered, i asked peter to sew them into the seem. I think it looks more fine tuned.

They aren't screen shots, but some good comparison pictures of the Expo and the Wested (front/back/sides/etc) are on the page page's Jacket Section... down near the botton of the page.

I'm not so sure about that. Save this pic to your harddrive, open it with Photoshop or something similiar and zoom in. To me, it looks like an X-box pattern. :? I might as well just see ghosts though

It is on the outside on the BACK of the jacket panel. What I was refering too, and what mechinyun cleared up is that on the SIDES of the jacket, near the hand warmers, the straps go under the seam. In the pic you provided, you can't see this. The picture below demonstrates what I mean.

Today's Westeds don't have this feature unless requested. Usually the straps are just stitched onto the outside here too, like the back.

Here's a pic of my Seal Chrome Goat from Flightsuits showing the gussets and action pleats with adjustment straps. I think FS has the ROTLA look nailed for that movie... underneath in front and outside in back...

I never liked the under the seam design. Screen accurate, they tend to pull out if the side pockets are used much. I know, as I had to have mine repaired, and alerted Peter to this problem. At the time I was receiving email after email from folks regarding this problem, as I was not the 'Lone Ranger' in this occurance. That was back in 1998. This is one of those infamous 'form over function' situations. Regards. Michaelson

John,
If you have the American Cinematographer/ Raiders issue, there is a pic on page 1107 where you can make out the Xbox on both ends. So, at least you can say it's screen accurate both ways.

Really!? That might explain why I thought I might have seen it both ways in the film. I can't seem to grab any stills to confirm this, though. Is it possible to post that pic?

I may be off my rocker, lol, but before I left for work today I was watching ToD and "think" that I noticed something.....

In the scene where Indy, Willy, and Shorty just jumped outta the plane on the raft, you see the back of Indy's jacket (the stuntman) as they slide down the hill. However, if you look closely, AND fast enough, at the straps, they "appear" to be on the "outside." But, I'm not certain 100%, so if anyone can grab a screen shot, we could inspect it closer....

Kind Regards,

Just FYI, you can use the zoom feature on your dvd player to zero in on any part of a paused frame while you are watching the movie. Its an easy and quick way to check things out close up without doing screen grabs and imports to photoshop. Nothing like a 64X zoom of Indy's shoe to get you excited...
