Any Magnoli cow around?

Post by IndyOriginal »

I'm hoping to soon pull the trigger on what, to me at least, is the "Holy Grail" of Indy jackets - the LC. I don't usually care about being extremely SA with my Indy jackets as long as they capture a certain look, but with the LC being my outright favorite, and after having waited for years and years to go for one, I'm trying to come as close as possible to SA.

Originally, I was content to wait and see Bill Kelso's LC jacket, as their Raider's is magnificent, but I'm not sure that they'll be getting around to releasing it anytime soon with the success of their other offerings (which is understandable).

I've always really admired Magnoli's LC jackets, and I've seen some great Wested LCs (once the effort is put in), so I'm trying to decide which route to go (leaning toward Magnoli). The only issue I have with Magnoli's jackets is that the lamb/goat appear to be really thin. Now this works great for Raiders/Temple, but the LC (which I'm convinced actually was lamb on film) hide is definitely more substantial than this, which pushes me toward a Magnoli LC in cow.

Basically, to cut to the chase, I am asking anyone for pics of their Magnoli jackets in cowhide. I am really interested in how thick it is, how it wears/distresses....ANY help would be very much appreciated!

OK, I'm going to post links to big pictures, so you can see the texture better. Important point - the jacket is NOT a true Indy style (it's his Vintage Adventure Jacket), but it is what Magnoli called (at the time) "dull finish cowhide." It is the heaviest hide I own, thick and tough. However, I have pretty much babied this jacket, so it barely looks worn. Magnoli offers a distressing service, and I've seen some of the results here on COW using this hide. It is just brilliant! One day...

Try to ignore the dreadful expression. I chose it because the jacket come out well in this pic.

As far as what hide was used in the movie, I'm far from an expert, but... I really don't think it was lambskin, not even thick lambskin. I think it was a thin'ish (or thoroughly beaten-up) cowhide. My reasons for this are based on how the jacket drapes and behaves. I have one of the US Wings lightweight cowhide jackets, and it behaves EXACTLY like the LC jacket on screen. My feeling is, a distressed Magnoli cowhide would end up just softened-up enough to behave right. I doub't you'd be able to find something more accurate among the current offerings out there.

Thanks Chewie, I really appreciate the pics and info. And that is a fantastic looking jacket. Your point about the LC possibly being a light cowhide definitely hasn't been lost on me. Watching LC in HD has me maybe 99% certain that it must have been a thicker lamb, due to the way it rolls up on the sleeves etc., but in retrospect the only cow jacket I've ever had is cut from the KOTCS batch...really substantial stuff.

One more question Chewie, is that the dark brown cow? Or medium brown?

In my opinion, KT Templars LC jacket is by far the most SA I've ever seen.

IIRC, it's a Wested in the lambtouch hide, with a few special requests on the pattern from KT.

Chewie's jacket is dark brown. I had the same jacket (Vintage Adventure Jacket) in the exact same hide and it was definitely the most beautiful jacket in my collection. In the end, I sold it to a buddy of mine as I found it too heavy for what I wanted. It still makes me sad when I see him wearing it, because it really is a great looking leather.

I WANT THAT JACKET! =P~

Eh-hem. Anyway. Yes. Dark Brown, as the man says. And it's not that "almost black" dark brown that Wested and US Wings have on their goatskin.

And for those interested, I opted out of the flannel lining that is standard on that one, which has made it more versatile. It may not be an Indy, but it is my favorite leather jacket.

Ah, yes, Holt - master of the Last Crusade jacket. Holt, that's your Wested Smithsonian jacket in HH, am I correct? This is the level of SA I'd like to accomplish. I know it took Holt years of tinkering and hard work (I don't even know how many jackets it took) to finally accomplish this look, though. We'll see what I can do for my first attempt :)

Nope, this is all Magnolis pattern. I had nothing to do with the making of the jacket.. I just aged it

I don't know why, but that jacket seems to look much more "substantial" than a few of the others I've seen. And like I said, as far as I'm concerned, the jacket we see on screen was a lamb (heavily treated of course).

You may have just pushed me over the edge here , Holt :TOH:
