Long "Indy" Bullwhip

Post by riku1914 »

This 14' long bullwhip was made with the basic specifications of an Indy whip, with some added details to fancy it up a bit. Added to it was a 12" handle foundation, brass ferrule with knots on either side, a french grapevine knot finished off with a Spanish ring knot, as well a cool concho on the heel.

Many of the classic Indy details were kept. Those include a 12 plait natural tan overlay ending in a 6 plait point with simple patterns ( diamonds on handle - herringbone on thong ), 5x4 handle knots ( 3 pass for heel , 2 pass for transition ).

Also, I'm going to get a better picture of it tomorrow. The seams look twisty on those pictures, idk why but it's perfectly straight all the way down! You'll see tomorrow :P

Im not a fan of the french grapevine or the concho. That's personal preference however. Other than that I think the whip looks good. Your work is constantly improving. It seems to handle well also. On a whip that long, taper is always an issue. You seem to have nailed it on the last 10-12 feet. It seems to have the same diameter for the first two feet or so. Then again, I'm trying to make that out from a small photo so I could be mistaken. That would be the only suggestion I have for this whip. Other than that. Good work!

Kind Regards,
Luke

It does look that way in this picture, but it does in fact taper properly. Pictures can be so strange sometimes, I just don't get it..

I was trying to remember the last time I had posted pictures here and realized I never showed the second picture I had promised! I cant' seem to find it anywhere except where I uploaded it to my website so here's the link to that:

I've made several whips since this one but none were Indy style. I'm working on a few of those right now though, so I'll wait until one or more of them are done before I post a few more pictures.
