A new hat for Adam Savage

Post by Marc »

Hi gang,

not sure if you remember the „motorcycle flip episode“ of Mythbusters, where Adam is sporting a hat of mine.

Here are two pictures of the episode:

Image

Image

It was a hat that Adam had purchased third hand (it first belonged to Tim in Germany and later he sold it to Ob1Al, who again sold it to Adam).

After seeing the episode here on German TV, I thought that no, no, no, that’s one of my first hats ever and no way a good example of today’s hats. So, thanks to a member here, I got a hold of Adam’s e-mail and offered him to trade the hat for a brand new one, if he’d sign the old screen used one and send it off to me. Adam agreed and a few weeks later I received the hat back incl. his signature.

Now I’ve finally come to finish the new hat for him and thought you’d like to see (Adam gave me his ok on showing it off). I’ve take some picture next to the screen used one, so you can see the difference (most is in the craftsmanship and the materials used of course):

And here’s the inside of the one I got back:

Adam, time to give me your address, so I can get this baby out.

Regards,

Marc

Great looking hat, although I thought the old one was great as well. :notworthy:

Did Adam have pads in the sweat? - I know it may not have fitted him properly because it wasn't made for him, but it's the way the sweat is bulging out.

Fantastic hat Marc

And my hat is sitting just a few inches away from these two hats. Marc called me earlier tonight advising me that my hat was finished \:D/

Looking very much forward to next week. :D

I love both hats. I really like the old logo, and wish I had a hat with that liner, but I really like the pyramid one too.

That is an oldy - haven't seen that liner in awhile.
Oh gosh yes!!! I'll never forget when Bernie called me up and asked me what in God's name that logo was and what language this would be, not to mention what it sais... Boy, I could just see 27 Lucasfilm lawyers sitting there in front of the phone, rubbing their hands :Dietrich:

VERY cool Marc! Now... what are you going to do with Adam's old hat? Display it somewhere?

I have an idea... you should try doing the same thing with Harrison Ford! See if he will give you one if his old AB's and sign it in exchange for a brand new one! 8)

Whoa, if the hats are positioned on the same side for each photo, I actually like the older one better, looks like a less conventional fedora to me, but that's just me being honest, they both look great.

I prefer the hats after being worn for a while myself. They'll evolve when they're lived in IMO.

However I'd prefer one of my current hats in a few years, rather than one of my first hats right now - I guess Adam thought the same ;)

Nick: I've put the hat next to my Indy props in my display cabinet over in the hatshop. I'll print the pictures of Adam wearing it and display them next to the hat yet.

Marc, it's great to see Adam getting SA Indy hats. Adam is probably the #1 Indygearhead in the public spotlight. I offered to make him a Raiders here a couple years ago. - His interest in the Clint Eastwood hat, got me interested too. What his Knudsen lacks is reverse taper in the sides -there is a little but it curves back in at the top. Perhaps you can refer him to this? -Just mist the outside of the crown with water till there are no more dry spots, but not soaked through, and pull the sides out at the top, (mine are a little to the rear of center, check in the mirror to see what looks right) make sure things stay in position now and then as it dries. This really pulls the back of the crown in, even makes a notch back there, but that's what the screen hat looks like in the side view. - This is an Akubra civilian model military slouch with a six inch crown, brim cut to 3 inches, leather band is an inside out Federation sweat. Image Not trying to hi-jack the thread, I'm under the impression that you, Steve, and Adam, are all too busy to contact directly with pm's or emails, and the Mods probably don't want me to start a "How to make a Spaghetti Western Hat" thread.

This is really interesting 3k$! It VERY much reminds me of another movie hat that I like a lot: Marty McFly's "Clint Eastwood" lid from BTTF III. Unfortunately I can't wear it over here... I've got enough people giving me the "cowboy" comment here, 'cause many people over here can't tell the difference between a western hat and a Fedora (or ANY hat for that matter  ). Wearing a poncho CERTAINLY wouldn't help

That's exactly what I have here. For most people here, a wide-brimmed hat is automatically a cowboy hat. :-s

The Marty McFly hat has reverse taper in the crown from every angle. It had to be made on a three piece block? Just goes to show, what is iconic about a Clint Eastwood hat is reverse taper. The Good, Bad, Ugly hat was a regular hat that was probably set with water like mine. I think you could make a nice one with the AB Deluxe block, if you made the brim wider. - When Adam started wearin' his "Clint" hat, it didn't register as a Clint hat with me at all, it looked like a generic 50's-60's era TV western hat. I found out here that it was a Clint hat. As I write this, I'm searching for images on the web, and I came across a twitter from Adam that this hat is a "Fistfull of Dollars" Clint hat. Viewed some stills from that film, and it works as that particular hat, but Knudsen Hats calls that thier Clint Eastwood hat. They don't make an iconic reverse taper Spaghetti Clint hat- maybe no one does? (They Do make a Marty McFly hat though! Called the Jim Bowie.) So either Adam's favorite Eastwood Western is "Fistfull of Dollars", or he can't find anything else! (and Knudsen hats are located in the San Francisco bay area) - Here's the GoodBadUgly hat from the front. - http://www.esquire.com/cm/esquire/image ... 930489.jpg ---------------- More angles - http://img279.imageshack.us/f/tucoblond ... red4is.jpg ------------ Marty McFly hat - http://img194.imageshack.us/i/martye.jpg/ ----------- Adam at Knudsen hats - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/5JLTTIMR ... xSpc9e9XbQ .. Clint did wear a Marty McFly hat in "Pale Rider" and a leather hat with fluted, reverse taper sides in "Two Mules for Sister Sera". Both excellent films.

Marc told me recently that he was even making better hats, as he has improved. But heck, if he got any better at making a hat I don't think I could stand it! The hats I have from him are simply PERFECT. But I know what he is talking about. When I see some of my real early ABs, that come back for reblocks, I cringe!! But only in regards to the sewing skills on those early hats. I took one out of the box recently to clean, reblock and refurb, looked at the seam on the back of the sweatband, and could not believe I used to sew seams together like I did! Looked like a monkey had done the sewing.

Good post here my friend, and I enjoyed seeing Adams old hat and new hat. Fedora

I guess so as he is wearing one in the latest episode, President's Challenge. I just watched the episode. Personally, I think it was kind of dumb to revisit a myth they had already debunked without substantial evidence of a different angle to the myth just because the President asked them to, but whatever...the hat looked great at least.

I liked the hat, and the retest. I thought the same thing as the President. It was one method of aiming and control they hadn't tried. Besides, how do you NOT use a suggestion from the Prez, who watches YOUR show???

Oh, no doubt it was a great opportunity. Political standing aside, having the president on your tv show is a sure fire way of getting noticed. I just don't thinkhis suggestion was a good one. He may as well have been saying "You couldn't blow up that building last time. What if you used more explosives?" Oh, really...you think?! But, I digress. The hat did look awesome. I could tell immediately it wasn't the same hat from the motorcyle flip episode and thought quietly to myself "Hey, that's probably the new hat the Marc made."

Marc I just want to say that that is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful Indy lids I have ever seen. Just looking at the photos one can get a pure sense of the quality and craftsmanship. One can tell right away that the felt is so incredibly smooth and finished. It's out of this world breathtaking and I am sure Adam was as blown away as I am right now. One day I hope to wear one of your fine fedoras.

Cheers
