Premium faux leather.
Yes, I know. yikes! Faux leather..
but here is the thing. I came into an discussion with a buddy of mine the other day and he showed me a piece of some high quality premium faux leather. I normally would never think about getting fake leather but this was super thick and looked very nice! And if he didn't say it was fake I would NEVER had guessed it. It looked like the skin on a shearling B3 with a dull finish. very nice!
I was thinking of getting a custom jacket made. Not Indy. I just wanted to ask if somebody have any good experience with such a fabric?
and how long such a fabric can hold up with good care? I know of faux leather couches that looked good after 15 years of use..and couches get ALOT of use.

Re: Premium faux leather.
'Premium faux' leather? Isn't that an oxymoron?
Kidding aside, something about this is VERY familiar. As I recall someone did this many MANY years ago and had a custom 'faux' leather jacket made.
It was nice looking, but from reports after wear, extremely uncomfortable as vinyl (which is what it essentially is) does not breath like leather does, so the wearer was essentially 'cooking in their own juices' the whole time they wore the jacket.
Nice idea in theory, but in actual application, over the long run proved to be a fairly uncomfortable item when used.
Like I said, though that was a LONG time ago, and may have been when we were at Indyfan.com.

Re: Premium faux leather.
Just to defend Holt a bit here, I know what he means: manufacturers are getting VERY good at making synthetic hides. They are getting to a point where they are hard to tell apart from genuine leather without a very close inspection. I've never worn one, but considering how many faux leather jackets are out there, I doubt they are that uncomfortable to wear.
Now, that all being said... personally I'd only go with faux leather to save money, but I've found (from my suppliers at least) the really good faux leather can be just as expensive as real leather so the only "benefit" is if you've got issues with killing animals.

LOL! No need to defend Holt at all. His points are very well taken.
I wanted to relate the past experience by someone who did this, and as nice as the jacket 'looked', it proved to be unwearable due to the heat factor.
They also do not naturally (or UN-naturally, for that matter) distress over time and use....something this crew likes their jackets to do or be capable of.
Anyone remember this discussion from 2008?

As long as it's rich, Corinthian vinyl........

Vegan friends tell me there is now high qual, expensive breathable leather-like material available. I've seen some amazing shoes and boots made of it. Whatever it is.

I'm a vegetarian, but until recently I'd never even thought about not wearing real leather.CM wrote:Vegan friends tell me there is now high qual, expensive breathable leather-like material available. I've seen some amazing shoes and boots made of it. Whatever it is.
I only have one leather jacket now though, and a few pairs of leather boots. Not for any moral reasons, I've just sold stuff I've outgrown or that didn't suit me.
The idea of a non-animal leather is interesting, but I think we can all (probably) agree, nothing will ever have the same appeal as the real thing.
Nothing 'ages' as well as leather.
