"Mirror Mirror" and "Django Unchained" Whips

Post by midwestwhips »

We haven't posted on here in a while, it's been busy, but I thought it might be fun to share a few photos from a couple of films we made whips for that are out this year. We just watched "Mirror Mirror" since it is now streaming on Netflix, and while there wasn't much in the way of whip work in the film it was neat to see the whip prominently worn on the character Butcher's belt throughout the film. This is a photo of the whips before we shipped them out to the Prop guys:

Image

Two of the whips were full size diameter for the stunt guys, and the one on the far left was scaled down for the actor so it looked properly sized on his belt.

And here is the photo they sent from the set:

Also, we made a whip for the new Quentin Tarantino film "Django Unchained" that comes out December 25th. And this photo is of the whip before we shipped it out:

Here is a link to the teaser trailer where the whip shows up at 1:18, 1:53, 1:58, and on the ground at 2:10:

Always good to see 'locals' make good.

Congrats on getting your whips on film. Do you get a mention in the credits?

Paul's going all Hollywood, yet he still takes the time to talk to us little people.

I didn't even notice that the first whip was scaled down until I read it.
Great job!

Thanks!

No mention in the credits for these as they were pretty standard "off the shelf" style whips so to speak, but for a big budget film we worked on that is coming out next year (we can't talk about it yet) we should be in the credits since we had to work with the prop guys to design something somewhat unique to suit what they will be doing with them.

Watched Django last night. Do yourselves a favor and go see it!! GREAT flick!!!!!!! And the whips definitely had lots of screen time!!! I was probably one of maybe a few who knew where the whips were made and who made them. Felt pretty cool. 8) Jamie Foxx coulda used some of Paul's instruction though. ;) excellent movie though. Well worth the $11.00 ticket price and the $12.50 for small popcorn and "large" Icee.

Paul, thanks for posting here on the whips you've recently made!

I love the knots on the Mirror Mirror bullwhip.

Saw Django this last weekend......really good film. The whips looked really cool on screen and definitely dangerous and deadly. What was really cute was that my wife reacted first, saying outloud," Hey, there's the bullwhip by the guy on your Indysite!". So it was kinda a plug for all, haha :|

The only thing I hated about the whip scenes in Django was how they wielded it. :whip:

The way they "cracked" the whip was kinda weird. I highly doubt they even cracked while filming. They seemed to be doing it wrong. But nonetheless, being hit by a whip, cracking or not, would still reallyyyyyyyy hurt!

I was thinking the same thing! The way Jamie Foxx was using it so quickly in such a close proximity made it hard to believe it would actually crack.

Wow, just saw Django - great movie! Not sure I would have felt comfortable seeing MY whips being used in that way though!

I personally didnt have a problem with Mr. Foxx using the whip as his charactor probly never really weilded a whip and he just saw one being used before. The cracking effect was needed cuz then it would have been much less dramatic. Sorry, just saw it again and remembered this post on that scene...

I didn't mean the cracking technique so much as the image of the whip being used to beat a defenceless woman. That's not an image that sat well with me as a whipmaker.
