U.S. Wings Texas Steerhide "Legend" W/ PICS

Post by indy89 »

Good day, everyone. :TOH: A week and a couple of days ago, I ordered a USW imported "Legend" in Texas Steerhide and I received it on Friday. For the longest time, my dream jacket has been a Raiders-styled jacket in cowhide with an affordable price, so the "Legend" seemed like the way to go. When I pulled the jacket out of the box and tried it on for the first time, I knew that this is MY jacket. \:D/

The jacket has a tough, pebbled grain to it and it shows that this jacket isn't just for nights out on the town, but that this jacket needs to be used and abused! After admiring it for thirty minutes, I gave it the ol' shower treatment to wrinkle up the leather. When that was done, I threw the jacket on and went to work where it sat bundled up in my locker for eight hours. On Saturday morning, I gave it a few coats of Pecards to moisturize the leather (it needed it), and to darken it a bit.

Overall, I am very happy with my purchase. I've been wanting a new Indy jacket for the past couple of years, and I knew that the "Legend" would be the way to go. It's durable, practical, and reasonably priced! Well enough talk! Here's some pictures. ;)

Very handsome jacket, and looks like a good fit. What size is it, and what is your height and weight?

Wow....I had that jacket before and it didn`t look nowhere as cool as your does. I wonder if I should have done the wash and distress thing to it?Your looks really cool. And I like the hat too, by the way.

Looks like a newer batch of leather, too. The stuff they were using before looked antiqued and distressed.

ron521 wrote:Very handsome jacket, and looks like a good fit. What size is it, and what is your height and weight?
It's a size small, and I'm 5'11" and weigh about 155. I'm not too sure about the weight. I thought about going with a medium, but I prefer my jackets to be slim fitting, so I went with a small and I'm glad I did.

I was expecting to see a distressed hide when I opened the box, and I wasn't disappointed when I didn't. I like the non-distressed look. It allows the jacket to naturally show its wear over time, and it's close to the color of the Raiders jacket. :)

I just received mine tonight and it's a quality dawg! The finish of the leather is different than the previous jackets from last year, more of a uniform brown. It has something similiar to a waxy finish applied to the exterior, and I believe once it is worn, you will begin to see the vintage effect as it breaks in. The unmistakeable cowhide smell is just like the earlier ones, and it appears to be very well made, maybe better than its predecessor. Quality is something we have come to expect from USW. Sturdy jacket. I am pleased with it. ;)

....I have been meaning to buy an Indy jacket, FOREVER! :P

I rolled it up last night and have been training that collar. Stiff initially, but its breaking in. Collars and boxed shipments just do not go together! They have ovbiously been doing a few tweaks to the pattern as the collar is not as wide and the storm flap not as narrow. The jacket is heavier than the first release, last year. Quality offering! You can't go wrong for $200. Oh, and the liner is dark, like the LC liner, warm.

If you have the first offering with the antiqued, distressed hide, hold on to them. They were lighter weight jackets as I recall.

I need to do just that!... :[

....here is a shot of this jacket in natural lighting conditions. Large, sturdy built jacket. It takes on a very LC-ish appearance, and with some break in, should be about as soft as it wants to be. It is not as heavy as a CE jacket, nor as light as the original antique, distressed Legends that were the original offerings from '11. Give me a few tweaks: sleeve and yoke seams aligned, smaller pockets, snaps on the flap, and call it a good LC repro. for $195, skirting the bottom hem of course. ;)

Scott, I know that Texas is big, but you're gonna run out of room sooner or later to keep all those great looking jackets, and I just want you to know that there is plenty of room up here in Kentucky and I would be more than happy to store some of them for you completely free of charge. :P

Nope his extras are almost legendary at this point but you really can't complain about it. I mean a free hat, web belt, or whatever it is at the moment is still pretty nice to get.

Here's what happened....I bought the cowhide jacket as pictured, then tried to exchange it for the lighter weight, antiqued lamb, but they were sold out of the Large. I'd also heard that USW is thinking of discontinuing the Indy line, so I ordered another, which is basically the same as the one above. Thinking of getting rid of all of them except for this one, which is a pretty good LC likeness and the Wested Hero. :-k

It's come up many times. As a matter of fact they were in the process of dumping the entire inventory and line of Indy jackets just before CS when they were advised not to by a concerned individual :[ . They were not even aware a 4th Indy film was in production at the time. Needless to say they reversed direction.

They are now indeed 'thinning out the herd', so to speak, rather than tossing the entire line.

Source is David Hack himself, CEO of USW.

Jacket looks good. I often think about getting another jacket and US Wings always seems like a good choice. Just not sure about getting the proper sleeve length. :-k

The sleeve length is the only (minor) issue I have with this jacket. I wouldn't mind if the sleeves were a tad-bit longer, but it's not that big of a deal. Other than that, it's a swell jacket. ;)

Ok, I need to get anal for a minute, so bear with me! :P I received a USW Steer and the right pocket flap looks nothing like the left. It looks like it belongs on a different jacket. The left is smooth, and the right looks like it could use a really good ironing for the wrinkles. Problem is they have just recently sold out of the smooth batch, as pictured above and have now been selling the newer batch, that is considerably more wrinkly. What to do... :-k

Well, if they're out of stock and you're not happy with it and all the tags are still on it, send it back for a refund, or stick it in the classified ads and sell it off. Not much more you CAN do.

Some folks don't care if the grain doesn't match on their jacket. I'm one of them.

I DO care if there is non-matching colors, but even THEN only if it's located in a really noticable location..... but different grains? It just adds character for me.....but not everyone feels the same way.

They're expecting the new aged cowhide jackets to be in by the end of February.

I don't know if they'll be the same price, but there's something else to mull over. ;)

I agree with M. In fact many of the best leather jackets (Aero, for instance) are made of pieces of hide that are different in character. Many folks prefer jackets that way and they are considered more desirable. Just read the comments on Fedora Lounge.

To each his own, I suppose, but I never preferred a non-uniform grain. Sometimes it cannot be avoided, due to the size of the animal, but with the pics above, it says otherwise. Cowhide is the largest of the most frequently sold leathers: lamb, goat or cow; so your chances of finding consistency in grain is easier, generally. Ordered one before, but sent it back to potentially exchange it for the lighter weight antiqued lamb.
