Help!

Post by Dr.JonesClone »

Hello everyone, I need your help with deciding about a jacket I'm thinking about purchasing. It is an earlier model Todds custom cowide that was special ordered for the current owner. Very good condition with a mild amount of distressing. The sizing is almost what I would order for myself. The issue I have is that I have been planning on buying the standard lamb version partially because its reputation for being thin and better in warmer temperatures. The cowhide version is $120.00 shipped, that is why I'm tempted. Can you give me any insight as to whether or not the cowhide version is a good or not so good choice for temps of about 48 to 60 degrees? Or for that matter any other points that can be made. Thanks. :-k

If it's one of Todd's custom calfskins, run, don't walk, to buy it.

I liked it as it felt as light as the lambskin jackets I've owned to date, but had the toughness of cow.

I personally think it was one of his VERY best offerings. I had one not long after he offered them, and unfortunately 'outgrew' it. (my wife is too good a cook :[ ). I passed it along to another young fellow, and he's STILL wearing it.

Lightweight, comfortable, and VERY well made. His custom stuff is well worth the monies, and his older stuff highly recommended by this writer.
I haven't had the opportunity to examine his current custom work, but I have no doubt it's good too, but I really liked his older customs.

As to your 'temp' question, NO leather is good as an insulator when it's cold. Leather is only good as a wind breaker, and you layer underneath it to keep warm.

Thanks Michaelson, not only for your insights but the earlier tutorial. I am not sure if it is the calf skin model you mentioned, but you definitely have gotten my interest peaked even more. I'm going to do a little more research, but I think will pull the trigger. Thanks again. I'll let you know my progress. Pic's will follow it's arrival.

Based upon that price, I would go for it! I don't think there would be too much difference between cowhide and lambskin as far as overall thickness and it being able to keep you warm, etc. I have a variety of A-2 flight jackets in everything from horse to cow, and there is not that much difference overall.

Well, the Jacket in question should arrive around the middle of next week. I deliberated about it for a good while. I get nervous buying something of this nature without trying it on. I think it'll be fine though. If not, I'll pass it along if it's not a condition issue. I'll post pic's as soon as I can. :D

The quality of the Todd's Custom jackets I have seen have far exceeded his standards (which are pretty good themselves).
For $120, I'd say you did rather well!

Congrats and don't forget to post pics when it arrives.

One last question, although it's a bit late to worry about it, I measure right at a size 52, and the jacket is a 54. It seemed to be a good scenario. Any thoughts? :-k

I would have gone for a 52 but it all depends if you like a snug fit or not.
