How many Poets were purchased for Raiders?

Post by Indiana Bugs »

M apologies if this has been covered, but I couldn't find an answer with Search.

How many actual brown Poets were purchased for Raiders? We all know the different scenes the hats have appeared in and named them accordingly - the Raven bar, Streets of Cairo, etc. The SoC hat could be a hat from another part of the movie after it had been heated, beated, and sweated in. What I want to know is how many actual hats were purchased, including any that were used by stunt doubles, etc. Thanks.

Well, p. 58 of The Complete Making of Indiana Jones has a costume concept sketch by Kelly Kimball of the main costume with the note "15 hats." But that doesn't tell us how many hats were actually purchased--simply an early estimate about how many might be needed. Hopefully others will have some additional sources?

I know that many jackets,boots,hats ect are purchased for the films..BUT I think sometimes we get lost in how many where "used" and how different they might have been. The same hat on the same block by the same hatter. Its not going to vary much if all. Remember clothes and hats all tend to move, bend, wear different and in different lighting and such. I wouldnt doubt HF only wearing 1 or 2 at best different hats. THIS however is just my humble opinion on the matter.

That's a good point on requested/ordered/used. I'm asking about how many were actually ordered, and then, I guess, delivered. I want to know what they started with.

I think on Steve Delks website you can read about his journey with making hats for KOTCS..I would say take what he says and apply it for the other films?? That should get you close to the actual numbers? OH and he has a pretty good story about it all to boot..

Richard Swales told me he made approximately 40 hats for Ford and the stuntmen for RAIDERS.

Wow, 40 seems really high.

According to the Adventurebilt site, Steve and Marc made 36 hats for CS. CS was a 'big budget' movie, Raiders was made on a moderate budget and GL, SS and FM worked extra hard to keep things under budget. I wouldn't expect them to put that much budget money into the fedoras at the time.

Part of the reason so many hats were ordered for CS was there was so much water involved and Bernie was worried about haveing to wait for hats to dry and hold up the production. Given the fast and dirty method used to shoot Raiders, I wouldn't think that much forethought would have gone into buying that many hats.

I'm just relaying what the hatmaker for RAIDERS told me in a letter which I still have. I wasn't on the set, of course. ;)

Please don't misunderstand, I'm sure that's exactly what Mr. Swales relayed to you. I'm just surprised at the number he states.

http://www.swaineadeney.co.uk/products/ ... index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"Apart from the original hat for 'Indiana Jones' (Harrison Ford) we made a further 45 'Indy' hats of assorted sizes, some for Mr. Ford and the remainder for the film stunt actors on the set of Raiders of The Lost Ark."

So that would be 46 (45 + original hat).

Not too many go for HJs anymore, not since the Christies hats turned out to be almost identical for a quarter of the price. I picked up a Christies Swerford some weeks ago and love it. Same colour and type of felt as the HJs I used to own - only difference is the more accurate proportions. To my mind the felt on these is the most SA I've owned - unfortunately its not as durable as certain other brands of hat.
