Thank you, Weston and Lion Tamer! I'm hoping things are dry enough at Ft. Mac this weekend for cracking it!

Re: New whip owner [w/New Photos]!
<-- Fellow Nebraskan here (new member, too -- but I've been lurking awhile)
What part of Nebraska are you in? And I'd be curious to know what park you were authorized to practice in?
Interesting story regarding the "whip as a weapon" thing: I've recently begun the adventure of making paracord whips. Since I'm in a house with a yard, that's where they generally get tested. Also, now that my friends know I build whips, they all want to learn how to use them (and/or beg me to make them one).
So one night we're out in the front yard cracking away when a police cruiser pulls up. He rolls down his window and says he received a noise complaint (mind you, it's 7pm -- so well before the city's noise ordinance kicks in at 10pm). He barely gets this comment out when he pauses, does a double-take and says: "um....is that....a bullwhip???"
I say "sure is! Sorry about the noise, we're pretty much done anyway." (Not a lie, by the way... we actually were about to head in.)
He says, "Ok. Sorry to bother you. Have a nice night." And he drives off.
So clearly, a bullwhip was the last thing he was expecting. I'm betting it was called in as fireworks or something.
But the moral of the story is that the police, at least, don't seem to consider it to be a weapon.
That's a fantastic looking whip, by the way! I have a Crease 'n' Corral whip on the way soon and I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas.

Re: New whip owner [w/New Photos]!
Welcome aboard, Zuiun--always a pleasure to see a newly-posting member, especially from Nebraska. I'm actually living in California these days as I finish my Ph.D., but am originally from the Tri-City area (I won't say more on the boards, but you can always PM me). So the park I mentioned is here in California, but I plan on bringing the whip (in checked luggage, of course) back to the family farm next time I fly home to visit. No worry about the neighbors being bothered there (especially since most of them are family)!
What kind of whip did you order from Crease 'n Corral? Hope you'll post pictures when it arrives! The waiting makes it that much more enjoyable when it finally arrives.
Best wishes,
Nebraska Schulte

Welcome aboard Zuiun!
You are going to love your whip from Dusty. It's definately worth the wait (and then some!)
Mr. Schulte,
I too hope for dry ground.
It hardly ever rains around here, yet the last two times I decide to go to Fort Mac, we get a storm. If it rains again this weekend, I'm taking it as a sign.

What? He didn't draw down on you and prone you all out and call for backup and cuff you and search you for your safety? He didn't lecture you on the dangers of bullwhips? He didn't even get out of the car? What kind of primitive civilization is this where citizens are free to pursue their interests without fear of molestation? And the police actually apologize!Zuiun wrote:He says, "Ok. Sorry to bother you. Have a nice night." And he drives off.
(Evidently I'm getting cynical in my old age.)
That's great. Sounds right neighborly.

We all had a pretty good laugh about it afterward regarding how obviously and completely he was thrown off by it. Whatever it was he expected, an 8 foot bullwhip wasn't it! hahaOildale Jones wrote:That's great. Sounds right neighborly.

I live just outside the city limits, not too many people around me, but close enough to hear my cracking clearly. I'm actually surprised I haven't gotten a noise complaint yet. Well, maybe I have, but the police in our town seem overly lazyZuiun wrote:Thanks for the welcomes, guys!

I bet he was expecting fireworks, rifles, something along that line

Re: New whip owner [w/New Photos]!
Haven't been in this corner for a while, but this afternoon for the first time in a couple of months (since the new addition to our family), I got out to put in some "cracktice." It's like riding a bike. I couldn't be happier with the handling of this whip! I had a friend join me, and he got to crack a whip for the first time. I don't know enough by any means to really be teaching about whips--but it was fun to introduce him to at least a few basics I've learned.
Also, I did something that I should have done a while ago: I finally applied Pecards to the fall. Now the Pecards and a clean rag are in the bag with my whip so that it'll quickly become a habit every time.
So, now that I have a whip, what are your suggestions for what to do next? Any suggestions on portable targets I could get to bring with me to the park? I need to check out more of our members' You-Tube videos. Other suggestions on materials and books? (I know I need to see about getting some of the suggestions in the stickie). Let me know of your recommendations!
Best wishes,
Nebraska S.

Daren's videos! http://www.youtube.com/user/flicky76?feature=g-all-u" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I don't have anyone to learn/practice with so I don't have anyone to critique my technique, but the other day I shot some video of myself for a whip review and learned that, well, I don't really know the Overhead. From the front, it appeared that I was just transitioning into a sort of Diagonal/Forward crack instead of keeping the whip in the horizontal plane. So I'm working on that. <-- All that to say, shoot some video.

Funny you should say that, because I was having problems with the Sidearm Crack yesterday, and watched Darren's video on that topic probably around the time you posted. lol Right away, I could see my problems were my feet and hand positions. Darren trained with the best, and that comes through in his videos.

Thanks, Oildale, and thanks, Nebraska! I appreciate the referral. And yes, I did learn from the best, so if I'm going to recommend anyone, I'm gonna recommend Anthony. http://www.delongis.com/PalpableHit/Bullwhip.htmlNES wrote:Funny you should say that, because I was having problems with the Sidearm Crack yesterday, and watched Darren's video on that topic probably around the time you posted. lol Right away, I could see my problems were my feet and hand positions. Obviously, my Youtube vids are easier to access than this DVD set, but my humble vids are FAR from a complete study, which is what you'll get from Anthony's DVD. I've studied with Anthony at his ranch on three separate occasions, so it's true, much of my style and sensibility stems from his instruction, though I hope I'm bringing a few things to the conversation . . .
Also, obviously, Adam Winrich has a TON to offer, and he is actually the person I first learned from via Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/AdamCWM/featured
Thanks again, guys, and stay tuned to my channel--this week I will finish editing a new video that reviews every single one of my Indy style whips.

Re: New whip owner [w/New Photos]!
Yesterday, I had a great time learning some new cracks from Lion Tamer. After yesterday, I feel like my technique has greatly improved, thanks to Lion Tamer's instruction. My Cattleman's Crack is now more straight and precise. Also, I finally got the hang of the Sidearm Crack.
But my favorite part was learning the Forward Crack used for the rifle disarm at the beginning of Crystal Skull. In fact I got the hang of it quicker than the Sidearm Crack--which then in turn improved my technique for the Sidearm Crack. My whip handled beautifully for it all.
After getting the hang of these, Lion Tamer had me try out several of his whips. I particularly enjoyed cracking his 10-ft Morgan whip from 1988. He got a short video of me doing that crack from CS with it
At the end, he examined my whip, and seemed to enjoy its handling very well. He did notice it was rather dry (which makes sense with the dry spells we've had around here), so on Lion Tamer's advice, I did use some Pecard's on the thong in addition to the fall (steering clear of the knots, handle, etc.) and hung it up over night. Here are some pictures of it from this morning:

Look forward to practicing these new cracks over the next few weeks!

There's no need to avoid the handle and knots when conditioning the whip. I've heard a few "myths" that people have told
about bad things happening when you dress those, but I have always dressed these areas and have not once had a problem.
I don't see not dressing that area it hurting anything , but it would even out the appearance of the whips color.

Re: New whip owner [w/New Photos]!
I do treat my whips' handles, knots and wrist loops with a light coat of Pecard maybe 2-3 times a year. And like riku1914, I have never had a problem. I condition the fall and thong more frequently. The reason I give the handles/turksheads less attention is because I think they get enough conditioning from the oil/sweat from my hands. I should have mentioned this to you Nebraska.
It was a fun day. I'm looking forward to the next "cracktice."
Best,
Lion Tamer

I took this picture recently to show my KOTCS-style rucksack, and realized it helps show off the color of the whip now. (sorry if it's a repeat for some of you):
Things have been too swamped recently for cracktice, but I'm hoping it'll work out again soon.

Nice contrast on the picture. And the whip seems to have been exercised well too.
