If memory serves me correct, I think Steve sent them a Raiders style hat in the beginning. Think Bernie and Steven liked the hat, but not the bash. That's when Steve changed the bash to meet their requirement of continuity with LC.

Actually that is a Deluxe model. When word got out that Adventurebilt could get the contract, a good friend of Marc's sent his personal Raiders hat to Bernie. This is that hat.

If that's the hat then ford couldn't have worn it. It would have been to small.

First, it wasn't a screen-worn lid. It was used as a test-fitting and to determine the vendor for CS.

In fact, it almost lost AB the job. To put it mildly, they didn't care for the Raiders bash. Steve then hurried out another in the bash they preferred. He was supplied a couple of LC photos to work by and made a hybrid Raiders style body with LC bash that became the CS hat.

There were a couple of us there for moral support for Steve while this was going on. He was sweating it out for a minute there.

Yeah, a couple of us were literally 'online' via email in real time as Steve was involved in the conference call with Pollack and Ford when that test took place.

I can't quote the exact words Ford stated when he saw that hat due to the word censor, but it wasn't pretty.

Personally, I'm STILL not sure what triggered such a strong reaction from Ford, but it may have been Mike's explaination above. :-k

Fact is, I thought Steve was going to die when the exchange was taking place.

He worked overnight to get an actual example of the CS proposed design into Pollacks hands the next day, and THAT'S the one that sold them on the AB. Not this one.

It's amazing the price they're asking, and the myth that's surrounding this hat too.

Well, some folks rather buy the sizzle than the steak these days.

The story can still be spun this was the hat that lead the way to AB getting the CS hat contract, as they kind of say in the very last line of the auction description, but in reality this was the hat that almost slammed the door in AB's face before it even got off the ground.

What's the old movie line? "when legend becomes fact, print the legend..."? ;)

They didn't. A 'friend' sent it for Steve/Marc before they had a chance to produce one for them to consider.

One of my faves! The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

I thought the hat that got sent off for the original test came from a COW member (whom I won't name)?
