According to Steve Delk, I actually wear HF's exact size 22 15/16" long oval. He said he used the same block hat he used for the Hero hat to make mine. Thought it was cool. Actually got an extra sweatband from the film by accident that said H. Ford inside.

Apparently I'm the same size as well. I've had a couple of hats made for me by Steve on the vintage block he used to make the Grey Train hat. That's the block Steve has used to make Michaelson's fedoras for years before CS. Steve had picked that block for the Train hat because it was vintage and he liked the shape so much.

Close enough at 22 11/16" that Steve blocked my CS on the same block he used for the film hats.

It depends, some of my hats are 57s, and some are 58s, yet they fit perfect. I have also had 57s that are tight and 58s that are loose. I guess it all goes back to handmade vs machine made vs individual hatter.

For what it's worth, Steve Delk posted this on April 13, 2010
No, actually a 7 3/8. But translates into a 7 1/4 in English sizing. That is where the confusion started, as I suppose Swales gave Ford's size using the English size. We assumed he used American sizing. Wrong assumption. Fedora

I don't mean to get off topic but this seems like a good place to ask this question.

Do any of you fellas wear a size "7" or smaller?

Back when I used to work in the western wear business most of the rough stock riders and ropers wore 6 7/8 to 7 1/8.

Sense I have been dealing with Indy style hats the size range has gone from 7 1/8 to 7 3/4.

Just wondering,

OK, after reading this I have to inquire:

Since Ford technically wears a 7 3/8 and NOT a 7 1/4 in US sizing (which is what, if I understand right, John Penman posted for his accurate hat specs in, I think, the FAQ section)....

Shouldn't the "official" Indy hat size be a size "59" and NOT a 58? A size 7 3/8, I think, falls under the 59cm hat sizing.

Just wondering as I'm curious and always like to find out what's truly SA. :TOH:

Thanks!

Thanks!

A English 7 3/8 = American 7 1/4 = 58cm = 22.82 inches

Also remember there is block size and hat size. Some go by hat size and some go by block size.

7 3/8 block size = 59cm = 23.23 inches and yields a 7 1/4 hat size = 58cm = 22.82 inches.
sweatbands take up space.

English size are stating block size and American go by hat size.

Thanks John for helping me understand this better! :TOH: I was confused by the original quote which said Ford's size was 7 3/8 as it made it sound like Steve was telling us it was truly a 7 3/8 hat size and not a 7 1/4. And it stated "which translates to a 7 1/4 in English sizing" and I assume a person goes off of American sizing when figuring the proper hat size from an American perspective (no offense or ill-meaning by that to you UK folks :TOH: ).

So the hat size still stays the same at 7 1/4 or 58cm. Whoohoo! \:D/

Just remember one thing. The numbers I posted is if the maker does his math correctly. I have yet to see one retailer/web site hat chart to be accurate. Not one.

I wear a 58 Fed IV. It's a bit on the tight side at times but repeated wear helps fit it better. I'm not brave enough to wear it outside of cons or costume events.

I got TOS on Blu Ray recently and was watching this episode just the other day. Awesome stuff. Their hat sizes would be off the charts!

Actually, his head measures 23" and all his hats were/are custom, so he kinda falls between a 58 and a 59 if you want to get technical....and even that depends on whose standard hat scale you're using. ;)

That's the thing. 58 & 59 is not a hat size it's a measurement. 58cm = 22.82 inches and 59cm = 23.23 inches. There shouldn't be a difference at all but for some strange reason there is. People must not be able to do math or something. :-k

The more I learn about his actual sizing, the more I think I could step into his Indy outfit perfectly. Same shoe size, same hat size, same height...

Now, how to invent a time machine and go back and lift one of the outfits from the Raiders set...? :-k

Going by your avatar photo, Zuiun, I think you could pull off a pretty convincing Dr. Gaius Baltar from the latest Battlestar Galactica as well :-k

I just got a Rabbit AB 7 1/4 from a member post in Cairo Bazaar, which fits perfectly. It's an older model with the Staff Of Ra liner and in Great condition.
