Well, the commercial got pushed back until the week after next, but the contract should be in by next week--then I can order. At this point, I'm leaning strongly toward an Idol Grab bash. Definitely one w/ the turn as I love that effect. I'm a long oval, so normally I'd be worried about turning a hat, but I'm thinking if the sweatbands are as soft as reported, I shouldn't have much trouble. Anyone else a long oval & if so how have you handled the turn?

How softer/floppier is the beaver felt than the rabbit?

Could a garrison raider pass for a crystal skull fedora if given the different bash? Or is the crystall skull fedora just a totally different hat by itself? Maybe I'm dumb but I think it could be done

cm289, great looking lid! You look very natural in it. :TOH:
thePawn wrote:How softer/floppier is the beaver felt than the rabbit?
The softness/floppiness of a hat is more due to the amount of stiffener used rather than the felt itself. Think in terms of a felt cowboy hat that's stiff as a board. It could be rabbit or beaver and still be rock hard. Same with Indy style fedoras. Most of the makers around COW don't use much stiffener so the felt is pretty soft/floppy upon receipt. With time and use, the felt will continue to soften. I have a beaver AB (my 'Michaelson' Sahara) that's softened up so nicely the brim bends and blows in the wind just like Indy's rabbit hat does when he's on the horse at the top of the hill before the truck chase.

The real difference in beaver vs. rabbit felt is in the density of the felt itself due to the fineness of the hairs. Beaver fur is fine with 'barbs' that interlock tighter in the felting process making a denser, more durable felt compared to rabbit. That's not to say that well made rabbit felt (and LLS uses the best available) isn't durable.
Aragorn658 wrote:Could a garrison raider pass for a crystal skull fedora if given the different bash? Or is the crystall skull fedora just a totally different hat by itself?
That's somewhat a matter of opinion (but isn't everything around here that). From the beginning the intent was to have the CS and ROLA hats be the most similar of any of the movies, just without the characteristic tight pinch of the ROLA hat. Steve Delk has said his ROLA and CS blocks are not that different and could use them interchangably. His ROLA block was, in fact, the basis for the CS block he ended up using for the film hats. And BendingOak posted this recently
Yep, it falls all on me. I got a little raiders on his CS hat. Just for and FYI. I could make someone using my CS block and make a raiders hat and I could do the reverse. That's how close they are.
Now, having said all that, only David can say if he thinks his block will produce a decent CS looking hat. I empasize looking because any hat coming out of his shop is going to be top quality, it's the final bash that's up for debate.

If I remember correctly, David used an AB block as a starting point, but made his own modifications to get more of what he wanted in a ROLA hat. Those changes could move things out of the CS bash option. To my slightly trained eye, I think a Garrison ROLA with a looser front pinch would work perfectly as a CS hat.

I'm soo torn on a Garrison Temple and also getting a Garrison Raider with a Crystal Skull bash!!! I'm probably the first to ask!

Raiders rebash/refinement

This was how my GR arrived, back in December:

Image

The more I examined it over the months, the less I liked how it looked. (By itself on a wig head it was fantastic, but on my head...another story entirely.) The brim looked off to me somehow, even though it measured correctly; there were some uneven spots where the brim was cut; and I didn't like the slant on the front pinch. (Picky, picky.)

I "unbashed" it and all but removed the turn. I used a fine-grit sanding block and evened out the brim edges. (I hesitated to even bring up the brim issue because I didn't want it to reflect badly on David. I didn't even notice it for a few months. I'm sure he would have fixed it for me, but I didn't want to have to send it back. And we got such a good deal in the first place that I consider it a wash.)

After having looked at the new Crease-N-Corral straw fedoras, I found that I really liked the slightly Western flavor of the "Temple bridge roll," so after I creased and pinched it, I rolled the sides. (I'll have to be a little more aggressive for the roll to take.) I think it looks a lot better on my head.

Image

Image

Verdict: You can't see it in my face, but it's love all over again.

Love what you did with it, Oildale. Did you say it was originally bashed WITH the turn? I can't really see much turn at all in that first pick...but that's only from an untrained eye. Did you get David to bash it after a specific scene originally? Thanks and great looking lid!!!

Thanks! Yes, I ordered the "Standard Raiders Style" in rabbit, so it came with the turn. I didn't ask for a specific scene. I agree that the turn is not nearly as noticeable on my head as it is in the pictures on David's site (at least in that one picture), but that may be due to the angle of the shot and the shape of my head. (If you go back a few pages you can see some additional angles.) I think maybe my long oval head isn't actually long enough to get the noticeable lopsidedness without an extreme turn. If you look at the position of the "tacks" on the ribbon, you can see the new pinch is not exactly centered, but it's close enough. (The tacks are only that visible in direct sunlight.)

What's funny is that when I look at myself in the mirror, this fedora looks almost too tall to me--noticeably taller than my Fed IV. But in pictures, it looks much shorter. Ah, the mysteries of the fedora (and head shapes, and haberdashers)! :)

Thanks for all the interest and the continued post, everyone. I was out of town quite a bit last week before the holiday weekend and have just now gotten some time to get caught up in some PM's and email.

Oildale Jones, I am sorry about the brim issue. I am sure you did a great follow up on the brim edge. I am sorry I missed that. The transitions I do for the Raiders brim is different than other vendors as I don't standardize the transitions as they play out along the front and back. The brim cut is completely different for what I am doing on the TOD hat. I feel asymmetry was in the Raiders brim, too.
The turn is not for everyone. If someone's eye wants symmetry, the turn will drive you nuts. It just won't look right to you. And it has an affect on the look of the crown.

Steerpike, you hat still looks awesome after all these years!!

cm289, the turn is working well on your hat. Great shot! Thanks for posting it.

I completely understand that "imperfections" are part of the process. It's not as simple as running a...um...brim cutting tool around it. It's all good!

My current turn time is at 6 weeks for hat orders. Surveying has gotten heavier so I get pulled away, but want my customers to know that I work hard at keeping the hat schedule. Thank you for your support and patience.
I remember having to wait 8-10 weeks to get my Boba Fett. Most exciting day of my life at that time when he showed up! In Maysville, Ga, nothing showed up at the first number. It was always the last number and then some. ;)

I'll just chime in here quick.

I placed an order back on May 7th. Really the only "glitch" in the process was that I never received a confirmation e-mail -- which may have been Paypal's fault rather than David's. When I contacted him to ask about it, he was quick to confirm receiving my order.

6 weeks is a rough wait, but not as rough as the 3 months or so Dusty (Crease 'n' Corral) is backed up on whip orders (but on the bright side, I timed that order during the winter so that when my whip arrived it was spring and dry enough outside to go crack it!).

I'm glad to see these guys are so busy though. I'd rather wait a little while for an order than not have great products like these available!

Hello everyone, new poster here on COW, and after following this thread
and all the wonderful toppers I see here I placed my order with David on
4/29. David gave me a 6 week quote, so the time is drawing nearer - and
I'm getting serious buck fever.. I know after keeping up with the
thread that I made the right choice.

Anyway, 1st post so hello to all, thanks to all for all the great pics to keep the
anticipation level up, and advance thanks to David for my upcoming hat.

Thanks one and all! :TOH:

I'll answer to either - Among my varied hobbies are old (and new ...) Vespa scooters,
so in a very rare flash of creative brilliance, I cooked up my handle. Working on some
sort of avatar now ... suggestions gratefully accepted. Perhaps something based on
my other big hobby ... classic Aloha shirts ... hmmm.

I confess, when it comes to my new hat order... like Bugs Bunny said in one of his
classic cartoons: "... it's the SUSPENSE that kills me"

[quote="Indiana Sloan"]Garrison Hatters "The Raider" Review
By Nathan Sloan

First of all, so that no one may say this post is useless without photos:
Image
For my entire album of photos with subtitled descriptions of some of the things I'll be bringing up in the review, use the following link:

See to me this is the best garrison hat out there that I've seen, I think this almost looks crystal skull to me i know they are different blocks but still...lol thats just me. I'm not a fan of the raiders super tight pinch and this one is looser and wow, does anyone else see it? I'm probably way in left field butt to me his fedora could pass for CS.

It really depends on how particular you want to be about "pulling off" the CS look.

As a hat with a looser front pinch, yeah, it looks more CS than Raiders. But I find the CS crown to be a bit "boxier" (for lack of a better word), bordering on reverse taper. But the defining feature for me of the CS hat is the triangle formed by the positioning of the pinch and the slope of the dents.

E.G.:
Image

The hat above is almost there, but not quite. Whether that is sufficient in your eyes to "pull off" the CS look is your call.

right, i asked Mr. Garrison about it and he said it wouldn't work i totally take his word for it but i saw that other Garrison fedora and it caught my eye and thought it might be possible if i didn't have a brim swoop turn or a tight pinch. I hope i didn't come off as sassy. I guess I can get a temple from him and get a henry from penman I guess thats my only option. It just stinks because I really really like the CS fedora.

AB just isn't my style, no offense to anyone for sure but they have enough orders to get done and temple holds a very special place in my heart so I kinda have to get a tod fedora. Plus Garrison has the best wait time of around 6 weeks, and the henry could be shipped in a week I dont have any patience I know i should for something like a custom hat but I just don't. Plus I'm getting into doing hybrid bashes too like I'll curl the sides of my tod very slightly...i dunno i've fallen in love with a cowboy curl on fedoras

What treachery is this!?

Let me take this opportunity to say to those it might apply to: Make sure your QUOTE tags are closed
blah blah
(you should have an equal number of brackets []blah[/] ) and use the "Preview" button before you submit your post. (You can always use the Edit feature later, too.) Also, proper punctuation is my friend (if not yours). The more reader-friendly you make your posts, the more friends you'll make! (Your mileage may vary.)

Wow. What's that line about sore and tough? (I only saw that movie 1.3 times, so I can't remember.)

Mitch read it correctly: I was trying to pass along some information in a partly joking manner. I didn't mean to insult or offend or otherwise impugn your sterling character. As far as I can tell, there's no "sarcasm" emoticon, and that's caused me some trouble, particularly with my mother. Next time I'll use more exclamation points.

That said, it would have been clearer that you were quoting someone else's fedora post if your quote tag had been closed. Failure to close tags is something I've seen a lot on the forum lately and for some reason, this time I felt I had to say something. It's unclear and inelegant and maybe it's just my cross to bear, like comma splices and run-on sentences and the use of "lol" as punctuation.

If you don't feel that any of this applies to you, of course, feel free to ignore it.

Your pal,
Oildale Cornelius Jones IV

I was talking with binkmeisterRick earlier this week about this. I have been absent lately and I just wanted to give a “blanket” update to my many customers here. Just after the Memorial Day holiday, I had a big survey project, that was supposed to start back earlier in the year, suddenly begin. It requires me to be out of town with the initial start up of the project. Also, I had some storm damage to my house a couple of months back. It wasn’t severe damage. I just needed to have the roofing replaced and I decided to upgrade to metal roofing. In the process, the roofers found additional damage that required additional work. Between being out of town with my survey project and dealing with the additional roof damage, it has pulled me away from hat making for a good two weeks. I just wanted everyone to know that I am working back to my hat schedule this weekend and with carry on. I am sorry that this has caused delays in the orders.

So just to clarify, are you saying you're about 2 weeks behind? Or that you'll be back on schedule? Curious, is all. :TOH:

I'd assume that the schedule is just pushed back an extra two weeks. For instance, if you were given an initial time of six weeks, I'd expect it in eight. I'm sure David will clarify, if need be. ;)

Bink is right. Combo of factors. Available block size is the biggest factor coupled with the time delay. I hit a streak of sizes that fall into the same two block sizes. That, with the time delay, pushes production back a couple of weeks. I will do my best, though. Thanks for the understanding.

LLS ~ I'm with nicetrylaoche, no worries at all. :) Life happens, and as someone who's lived off
and on for 1/2 my life in Alabama, I can sure sympathize with the weather damage on your home.
Good to hear it's not major. Thanks for the update!

Eight months and three days of near-constant wear, in all types of weather and this is the result:

Truth be told, I did give the brim a little steam and press from an iron about two weeks ago. I kinked it a little while sitting on it in a restaurant.
Now it's reshaping and a little too flat in the sides and rear for my tastes, but it's breaking back in nicely.

If you are waiting on one of these, the wait is worth it.

David, thanks again for such an awesome hat!

Mountaineer, that hat suits you very well! I like the color on the ribbon--it actually seems lighter in the more distant picture (similar to my PB Indy Straw brown ribbon), but the close-up photo looks very much like the ribbon on my Adventurebilt. In all cases, it looks good.

:TOH: Best wishes,
