If this thread was simply meant to be a place to wave your favorite flag and that's it, then that's great! I was only thinking of the members who are scouring the site for pics and info before making their next jacket purchase.

Okay, here goes:

Gibson and Barnes Expedition in Goat!!! \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

Let the parade continue!!! \:D/

Michael :TOH:
I was about to post that I still didn't know which to get.. was thinking on a ToD. Have any pictures of your recommendation?

If you don't HAVE a jacket yet, this is kind of a tough discussion get into. :[

So true. I love EVERYTHING about Raiders, it's my favorite out of all the movies. The look, etc. But I love the LC jacket, hands down.

Totally agree! \:D/

indyexpat, my first Indy jacket was purchased from "the maker" because they claimed to have made the screen used jackets. I figured I couldn't go wrong. Turned out I wasn't satisfied so I continued my quest. My second Indy jacket was a Novak, of which I figured I could get the perfect look by telling Tony how to do his job... Still wasn't satisfied...

Eventually, I started really digging :dig: on this site to find pics and info about real jackets, not screen grabs. Finally, I found a photo of Michaelson's Expedition in Goat and said, "That's how I want my jacket to look!" \:D/ I immediately bought one and absolutely love my jacket. But that doesn't mean the Expedition will be "THE JACKET" for you.
indyexpat wrote:I'm hoping to find a great recommendation for one I will love!
Since you have in your mind's eye what you want, just start researching this site. If, after your search, you still haven't found one, it won't be due to a lack of information and pics! :P

Michael :TOH:
Appreciate your feedback. Do you have a link to the Michaelson's Expedition in Goat? Research is fun but I'm still without a jacket (that I like). I'd like to check all of these fine jackets out.

Uh, yep, that's my ('Michaelson') G&B vegetable tanned Expedition , and these are the photographs that Michael (Tundraraider) is referring to.

FYI, G&B doesn't sell vegetable tanned goatskin Expeditions at this time, but if you find one......grab it.

I didn't read into the title of this post deeply enough. Favourite doesn't denote 'available'. :-k Perhaps a recommendation of recommended that is 'available' to purchase would be great. Any suggestions?

Chrome tanned goatskin G&B Expedition, but like you said, that's not really the topic under discussion.

Might want to try starting a new thread along those lines, though I'll warn you, prepare for a storm of suggestions, and a HUGE headache in trying to make any sense of it.

Best do your own research and use the 'search' function in the upper right hand corner of this site. :TOH:

This thread has several pics of the various Expeditions offered at present and in the past:

http://indygear.com/cow/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=48537

For example, mine is the chrome-tanned Expedition which Gibson & Barnes currently offers.

For other brands, I'd recommend browsing in the jacket section for threads titled "Show us your [insert brand name here] jackets."

:TOH: Best wishes,

Huh. There's a place in Tokyo with G&B jackets? How'd you find that? I've been wanting a 'Raiders G&B' (not indy style) for a while but wondering if I could slip down a size in it (compared to the Expedition). Might be worth a trip there if I'm in Tokyo again, or seeing if there's something similar in Osaka.

Looks like G&B's had a bit of a price hike too. Everything's +$40 from when I ordered my expedition last year.

The location is Ueno, in Eastern Tokyo...There's a huge street there called the Ameyokocho, that sells a load of random stuff..I'd found one shop there selling the G&B, as well as a load of other USAAF jackets, navy jackets, and militaria as well, and it looked decent for a visit and "try on"...Although the price is still very high... Here's the shop's online site;
http://www.nakatashoten.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm still debating the safety of travelling there to "check", since I know my "check" will probably turn into a "paycheck" for the shop...But it's something to think over...

I'm gone for half the day and here we have nearly a full page of interesting replies and input. Mark, you were dead on with the subject matter at hand. Sometimes ideas create other ideas and you never know what can spin off from them, but if a jacket or certain maker sparks curiosity, and causes others to start asking questions, use the search function, etc., then all the better. I'm curious as to which one you chose and why you happened to choose it...? Pics, etc., info on why you chose it just helps others to possibly make a more informed buying decision.

The biggest reason why the US Wings Legend is my favourite is the size of the pockets, they're huge, and the shape of the flap. In my opinion, and from what I've researched, the Raiders jacket pocket flap has to be "scalloped". The Nowak Raiders has it, and so does the Legend.

Here are my Legends in lamb, cow and goat. :TOH:

For me my favorite is my TN CS. I've owned many jackets over the years from several different vendors and I must say that the only jacket that looks the part (for me) is my TN. I've never owned G&B and think that I'd like it too, but for now my TN keeps me happy. :TOH:

I'm hopeless!

I put on my old Wested this morning. I rarely wear it because I want to preserve it. I've had it the longest, it's the most adventure worn, and the last one I'd ever part with.

For the two days previous, I wore my US Wings 30th Anniversary lamb, and thought it could easily take the place of my Hero as my favorite. At first, the lamb felt too delicate to wear hard, (like every lamb jacket I've ever had, besides the SL) but now, after nearly a year, I have no concern at all; it's one of the most robust lamb jackets I've ever had. Fits great, looks great, feels great, is great!

I've given away jackets to friends and family, and what's left in the closet is my collective "favorite". I wouldn't part with any of them.

Don't mind me, nothing to see here folks, move along. :Plymouth:

Great post thank you. Now I'm on the Wested site deciding on 'model'/version and leather. Lamb or goat? So many leather, vendor types and movie versions available. How about we create a top 4 order of purchase from all currently available models.. be interesting to see the voting there! Tempted to get lamb (like soft) but concerned about color. Best recommendations please!

Nope, pick the one you grab the most. That would definitively be your odds on favorite, but none of this wussing out and claiming them all. [-X

I've had more Indy jackets than most, but far less than some.
Four Nowaks. Six Westeds. One G&B. One Todd's.
All were pretty much useless as practical, every-day jackets, except the G&B, but that was so...boring looking in charmless, chrome-tanned goat.

This concerns me; that we all chose our favorite jacket and find out that none of them are really that great. I am not happy with my current one and looking (and hoping) to find a day-wearable one soon!

This is a good post about the jacket differences with photos.

Based on current product availability, it's going to be a Wested, Hero, or Magnoli. If I've missed any please say and still unsure about movie version..

Look, that's Kevin Anderson's opinion about jackets he's owned, nothing more. I've found many Indy jackets of various hides and patterns to be perfectly functional every-day jackets. Alot of guys will choose an A-2, I have yet to find one that the knit cuffs don't ride up, etc. Think about what you want to do with it, any of the vendors here will likely be able to accomodate those needs. I wouldn't rely too heavily on this thread to help you with your personal purchasing decision; the thread is about our personal favorites, and as has been pointed out, there doesn't have to be a logical reason for it.

Very true, thanks. I only have the one jacket.. and there is much enthusiasm here about the different types. I was hoping to get an early recommendation. The G&B sounds good but no longer available? This is after all a serious problem I have; no Indy jacket to wear each day! ;-)

Correction, I had a duff link. G&B is still available (phew) but does anyone know which movie this jacket was copied from?

In short, it's based off of measurements taken from one of the stunt jackets from Raiders. Three of our founding members (Michaelson, _, and Lee Keppler) are the ones mentioned on the G&B website as helping get this jacket made.

As I noted above, I've only owned 2 Indy jackets - Todd's and G&B. The Todd's was fine, but somehow not as day-to-day wearable (for me). I got my G&B lightly used from Nevada Jones in November of '09 and really have worn it daily just about ever since. That goat is tougher than tough. It's well broken in, but despite spending several days a week on construction sites in dust, wind and rain it shows almost no sign of "distressing".

My other leather jacket is an LL Bean "Flying Tigers" A2, also in goat, It's also had a lot of hard wear and doesn't look all that different, except for the cuffs and waistband, from the day I bought it. I've never had a horsehide jacket, but I can't imagine ever needing anything tougher and more durable than goat.

I know Nevada has a "Distressed Expeditions" thread, and some day I may put up a pic of mine, but for the life of me, except for the barely visible mark where a bull mastiff grabbed me by the arm, I can't see anything that qualifies it for that discussion. The G&B scratches my Indy itch and I can't think of any reason to change.

Raiders? Ok great.. what leather choices are popular? I fancy the lamb.. based on what I've read so far as it's soft but lasts and goat has a sheen to it that isn't for everyone. Think I'm going to have to start a collection like you guys and know what it's all about. Just be great to find my preferred choice first time round.

Indyexpat: Your best chance to get your "preferred choice first time around" is to look through the various threads on each kind of jacket in which you are interested. There isn't a single jacket on here that everyone is going to like. Your best bet is to decide on which characteristics YOU are looking for in a jacket, and then see which most interests YOU. ;)

I've not seen any mention of the Magnoli jackets here. Does anyone have one? Thoughts on it?

I'd still really recommend using the Search function, too. Just putting in the keyword "Magnoli" for a search in the Jacket section, searching in Topics and listing by topics, you get all of the following:

search.php?keywords=Magnoli&terms=all&a ... mit=Search

Apologies and thank you. Really I was noting how no one had mentioned the Magnoli in this thread, one jacket I'm beginning to feel won't be in my collection. Again I apologize, searching and researching isn't very fluid in tapatalk
