Indy Jacket without extra pockets -- hand warmers...

Post by WConly »

I did a search and did not uncover anything specifically regarding this, so I will approach it as a 'new' subject. (Mods: If it is not, please move this appropriately.)

Has anyone ever ordered a custom 'Indy' jacket without the hand warmer pockets and if so, pics, likes, dislikes, etc.? I was wearing my black Wested goat raider today and for some reason it just hit me that the jacket might really drap better, etc. without the extra pockets -- similar to military spec A2's, G1's, etc. Truthfully the more I think about it, I would like to give it a try. I am not real fond of the way the pockets tend to jut out from time to time and could easily get by without this, as I rarely use them, as is. Just curious! Thoughts? W>

I picked up some leather needles and heavy thread the other day to sew up the handwarmers on two of my lambskin jackets. The pockets lay down and look better if you don't have the side straps cinched down tight. My main reason for doing it is that because that area is such a weak spot, and I've had it tear out on me before. I'll leave the hand warmers alone on the jackets made from thicker, stronger leathers since I actually do use them, but I think the lamb just doesn't have the strength right there.

Interesting. I have never had that problem with any of my jackets. Lamb or otherwise, however I have had small seam tears with the cargo pocket on one Wested pre-distressed cow and on a Wested lamb. Thanks for the feedback. I was wondering how the jacket would look without the pockets, considering the cut of the jacket overall and the side strap question was one that got me thinking about this. Thanks again. W>

No problem. I'll put up some pics after my modification is complete and you can judge for yourself if it improves the appearance. I know it will improve the durability!
