Federation IV signed by Shia LaBeouf, is it worth anything?

Post by swcrazyfan »

Hey guys! I'm sure no one remembers me, but I used to be on more back around when CS came out. Recently I haven't had time to work on my outfit, so I haven't gone on here much. However, I've been missing wearing my Federation around. But this is where my problem is: I met Shia LaBeouf and he signed it! I met him when he was filming Transformers 2. He's a really nice, down to earth guy. This isn't a "For Sale" thread, I'm just trying to figure out if this thing is worth anything? Right now I don't have much expendable income to buy a new Fedora. It's funny, but I almost wish I didn't have it signed because then I'd feel good about wearing it around!

What do you guys think?

I'll trade you one autographed picture of Arnold as Mr. Freeze I got while he was campaigning for governor and a couple of baseballs signed by Steve Garvey. :D

Since I paid $150 for the fedora, and you got the autograph for free, I'm guessing that wouldn't be a fair trade ;) haha

Had to buy the Batman and Robin movie book first though. And a box of Rawlings baseballs when Garvey came to the school I used to work in. :D

All kidding aside, I think you should hold on to the hat. Who knows, Shia could be the next Indy in 10 years!

SeriouslyI don't know if I'd want to wear a hat with writing on it. I think it's time to retire that one and get a new hat. It's just what I'd do. :TOH:

That's the problem. I've retired it for the past 3 years since getting it signed, and I don't have it in my budget to buy a new one yet :-k

Hmm, bummer. Not sure why you'd be ok with his signature actually on the hat.... now if it was HF's, that would be different....

I doubt it's worth even what a used Fed IV would be since it's not really wearable in that condition. Not trying to be rude or mean, and I feel bad saying it. Maybe someone on eBay would buy it?

Well, at this point I don't really want to wear it. It's more of a collectors-type display piece now. At the time I met him, I was simply wearing the hat as he walked by and I just so happened to have a sharpie on me, so I had him sign it. I mean, he did play Indy's son.

And I agree! I actually think Shia is awesome! I grew up watching him, and I honestly can't think of a better person to play Indy's son. Now, people may not like crystal skull, but that's a different topic :)

Hate to add another "should have done" to the list :[ but it would have been better if he signed the sweatband. (Where most Hat autographs, if any, are!) Then you could have just traded out the sweatband! It's a great looking hat with a great bash, but a signature right on the brim in the front, looks REALLY Weird! :-k :-s

Yeah, I'd keep it if I were you. I mean it's not everyday Indy's son signs a hat

Besides, most of us are collectors here. It's hard to judge someone for it just because you don't like what they have. I think it's awesome myself.

As far as another hat is concerned, I'd just scrimp and save if I were you and keep looking in the bazaar here. Stuff pops up for cheap, regularly and is normally gone as soon.

Yeah, I think I'm just going to save it for now. When I first had it signed, I didn't have much time to think about where he should sign it. Plus, I didn't know much about hats at the time. I would've had him sign the sweat band, but I didn't really think of that till after. I agree that for a wearable hat, it's nothing to look at, but for a display piece, I'm trying to figure out how anyone would display a seat band without taking it out. And if I did take it out (assuming he signed it), who wants to display a sweatband? A fedora is much cooler to display.

Thanks for your thoughts, guys!

Dont listen to the haters of Shia..It IS worth something. Shai WAS a part of INDY and its a real collectors item. I would totally keep it, get a clear box made for it with a hat stand mounted in it for show purpose..I think its awesome man..AND the hat didnt cost a LOT 150$ isnt much in the world of fedoras.."i have a pretty new FedIV as well"..

Keep it, show it..and pass it down when its your time...

By him signing the top of the brim it's easier to display. Keep the darn thing and place that in your collection. Why must it be a $ that makes it important. That's why most celebs don't like signing things anymore.

Definitely keep it (unless you REALLY need money to buy a new hat, which you don't - you can spend the next few months saving up for it if that's what it takes). We all already know that it'd be way cooler if Harrison Ford had signed it, but this is still very cool. Say what you will about Shia LaBeouf, he's an Indy cast member. Would any of you turn down an Indy hat signed by Karen Allen or John Rhys-Davis? I don't think so. In fact, if they ever get around to making Indy V (which I still consider a very likely possibility) you can probably count on Shia appearing as Mutt again, making him one of few actors to appear in more than one Indiana Jones film. If you've got the space in your house to display neat stuff like that (and you certainly have the interest), I think it's worth keeping. If you do decide to sell it, maybe at least wait a decade until we know for sure no more Indy films will be made. You hat will likely increase in value with additional movie releases.

Regardless, don't think of it as an investment. What do you hope to get from it some day, $1000? Yeah, that'll keep you going for a fortnight at most. Collecting memorabilia like this won't give you the same kind of retirement a good 401K would.

Not long ago in an interview in Entertainment Weekly, Spielberg said he and Ford were ready to make Indy V, he was just waiting for Lucas to give the go-ahead. He was also asked about comments Shia made about CS, and Spielberg simply, "I won't go there." That might mean Shia won't be in the next one, or, just as likely, it being L.A., he will. Grudges in the film industry are far from being the bottom line. I say hold onto the hat, it's signed by Indy's b*****d son!

Hmm, I'd never heard that Shia dissed KotCS until now (I just looked up the comment). All the same, Spielberg seems to be a fan of Shia as he was still cast in the latest "Transformers" movie. Shia may not be Indy's sidekick in the fifth movie, but he may at least bookend the film like Jim Broadbent did in KotCS.

Who really knows, though. It's all speculation anyway.

It would probably be Hoss and the 'Old Man'.

Hoss: "Man, I don't know. The hat is neat, but not worn in the film. No one even likes this actor, and it will probably sit in my shop for ages before anyone buys it.

Tell you what, my man, I'll offer you $10 if that will help you out".

Old Man: "I wouldn't offer $5."

swcrazyfan:"$10?! Even with the photo showing him signing the hat? Can't you do at least $25?"

Hoss: "I'll go $12.50, but that's my best offer. Take it or leave it."

swcrazyfan: "$12.50. Hummmm.....Well, ok. I'll take it."

(Hoss to 'Old Man',) "We're going to make a killing reselling this!"

Old Man: "Yeah. Sure......"

 ;)

Yeah, I occasionally watch the show. :[

My impression is that a grudge in the film industry isn't quite the same thing as in real life. Kevin Costner tried to block Kurt Russel's film, Tombstone, from being made because he didn't want it to interfere with his film, Wyatt Earp. But they got over it. Tombstone won. And they went on to make a bad film together....

I had heard, I think somewhere else on here, that Ford moved permanently back to New York City and is no longer down in Jackson Hole.

When I was down there, I stopped into a knife store and talked with the local resident who ran/owned it. I mentioned how I had heard Harrison Ford lived here (JH) and she said, "Oh yes. In fact, he comes in almost every day, has coffee and we talk a bit. He's also very genuine in that he always stops and signs autographs for people that stop him and never seems to mind..." Unfortunately that wasn't a day he decided to pop in.

yeah, but that's different. They had rival films. Shia was cast in transformers before indy. Shia was IN a Spielberg movie and he dissed it. Why would you want an actor in your next film that publically trashed the first one?

Take Megan Fox......she trashed Tranny 2 and she was written out of the 3rd.

Well, that's certainly ok with me. My guess is that Shia is unnecessary to the Indy series: Indiana Jones is the star, even an older Jones; and if Jones needs or requires a sidekick then there are plenty of young archelogists waiting to ### ist him in a dig. Harrison Ford comments on Shia are interesting too. Ford is critical of Shia but doesn't disagree with him, pe se. Which may not have been Ford's intention. I thought LeBeouf was there just to get the youth vote, sort of like Ricky Nelson in John Wayne's Rio Bravo - both actors being a bit miscast. But, yes, a common rule everywhere is don't bite the hand that feeds you. I think George Lanzeby said that....
