Picts of Todd's DOWNTOWNER

Post by RaidersBash »

Finally got some pics up and ready of Todd's Downtowner. It is a stiff hat, but since I train horses and ride quite a bit, I like my hats to wear more like cowboy hats. Personally, I hate the look outside the bar with Indy's brim flopping around everywhere...

i didn't realize how bad the light was until i uploaded these to photobucket...

also, i've tweaked with the hat quite a bit (blame my OCD :o) I think the hat looked better when I first got it than it does now in the photos, but that's ALL MY FAULT...not Todd's. I accidentally put a little taper into it, but I finally tweaked it to a spot I like (as close to what it was when I bought it and less taper) and don't plan to play with it anymore!!!!!!

(also...Todd's bag, gun holster, whip holster, shirt and boots, and knife in the bag)

Looks GREAT, RaidersBash!
That hat looks better & better everytime I see it. Personally, I don't think your fiddlin' with it did it any harm... maybe just gave it even more character!
You've definitely go the LOOK that pulls it all together, too.
Kudos.
:)

As far as I'm concerned, Todd should be using you for pictures on his website.
You wear it well.

The hat looks great. Whatever tweaking you did doesn't seem to take away from it. I LEARNED to leave well enough alone with my hats. I leave the bashing to the professionals. ;)

Yep, that for sure would have been the better way! Todd only had 58's left in stock when I was there, and it came down to 2 that fit fairly snug (I'm usually a 56), one I REALLY liked the bash, the other one fit better...I went for fit...

In hindsight...but really, you'd have to have been a total nerd to even notice the difference between the two (which I guess some of us are, so.... :)

Just steam from the tea kettle. I ran into Todd around town a couple weeks ago, and he said I need to be careful or I would deactivate the stiffener. After he said that, it kicked in another level of my OCD ;) so I bought a bottle of Bickmore hat stiffener and touch it up between tweaks...

...doh!

Thanks for posting this photo (and for doing this in the first place!)...
I've never seen Todd in any photos so it's a pleasure to put the face to the name (and he looks like he's just as pleasant a fellow as he seems to be here in these forums.)

Thanks Mitch :) I try to be.

To everyone else. While I was there I bought Todd's replacement hat ribbon, and let me say IT LOOKS PERFECT!!! It's a deep dark brown that looks black in many light situations. If anyone has a ribbon they want to replace, Todd seems to have found a good one. It might even be the SA one, but I can't say for sure. I've read a bunch that say only Steve and somebody else know where to get the movie ribbon, but this one from Todd sure looks good...really good.

A word of thanks from me too for the photo of you and Todd, RaidersBash! I've been getting to know Todd recently as I just got turned on to his boots - and am now looking at getting more of his gear - and he's a great guy. Nice to match a face to a voice and name, like Mitch says.

You make a pretty sharp Indy, RB! You guys with strong jaws like Mitch and RB can really pull off the look better than guys like me with the narrow faces and non-existent jawline. :TOH: It's funny, I match Harrison Ford in all the basic gear measurements - same hat size and oval, same shoe size, same jacket size, but I look nothing like him, and don't pull off the Indy look well, IMO. Oh well, there's only one Indy after all, right? ;) I still enjoy the gear. :D

Tundrarider wrote: I respectfully disagree. :) You look great in your avatar!!! Have you ever geared up, grabbed a friendly photographer (i.e. friend or relative) and gone out someplace inspirational and took 50 or 60 shots? If not, I think you will be surprised what you come up with. Out of those 50 shots, you will find several that even you like!
Michael :TOH:
A couple of weeks ago, I realized that I had never seen myself in the full gear, while in motion. I felt kind of silly, but I set up my Nikon D90 in my room and just walked around in the gear, occasionally doing some "Indy-ish" moves. I was pleasantly surprised, as I looked much better in the gear than I thought I did. I think many would find they feel the same way if they saw themselves in the gear, in motion. I was shocked at just how good my favorite Todd's standard looked while I was moving. I could probably post a few frame grabs, or edit something to put on YouTube once I got the guts up. Now if I could just cut the hair and trim the beard....

Try it out, you may be pleasantly surprised as well.

Aw, shucks, guys - thanks. I appreciate the kind words and encouragement. I guess I will give it a try sometime - I really never have. I had my wife (who freely admits she's not comfortable with cameras) take some of me for my first hats (Fed IV and Garrison Raider) and when I got my Wested Jacket, but other than that I've not tried getting any pics of me in gear. For one thing, first I've got to get all the gear! I only have the hat, jacket, and just last weekend, the boots and gloves. It might be a bit before I can glom onto a gunbelt, holster, pants, and shirt - never mind a whip! That's gonna take some saving up. :dig: Maybe I can find some "close enough" items for the short term, if I can get them cheap enough. But I'm the type that likes to wait and get the more expensive stuff if I can save up enough to afford it. So we'll see. Maybe Santa will supply a few items this year...

Anyway, sorry to derail the Downtowner topic - that hat does look good on you, RB! And I think the bash looks fine. I can't resist constantly fiddling with my bashes, so I know what you mean about the OCD. It did seem a bit tall to me sitting on a table next to the Uptowner in one of the other set of pics somewhere, but on your head there it looks just right. You wear it well.

I agree Jason. I think your avatar pic definitively has the look, and most pics are just a matter of camera angle and lighting :[ Looking forward to seeing your full gear post ups!

Back on topic:

I'll post some updated pics with the new Todd's ribbon soon. I also tweaked the bash again after watching Oaks tutorial on youtube, trying to replicated the upside down L. Not so sure I pulled it off, but with the new ribbon it looks so good nobody should notice. A special thanks to my girlfriend for sewing it on and doing the bow work :notworthy:

Thanx, Mitch... I'm told I "wear it well..." ...especially by the ladies...!

But... I realized last night that the "turn" was shaped wrong (see my previous post) and just finished steaming it a reshaping it properly. Not hard to do at all.

I also put the Downtowner side-by-side with my vintage lid, and realized that the dimensions are truly very close! In fact, the sides of the brim on my vintage are actually
wider on the sides than the Downtowner. Oh wait... duh.. that's because of the dimensional cut on the Raiders lid... nevermind!

Needless to say, I'm pleased as punch! A VERY good buy indeed!

Thank You, Todd Coyle for your wonderful company!

I'm not sure which is the Coyle's (Todd's) Downtowner topic:

Coyle's Downtowner Fedora

Perhaps we should have a standard Show Us Your Coyle's (Todd's) Downtowner topic; and a similarly titled thread for the Uptowner.

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to the forum, I have posted a few things in another thread but not in the Todds Downtowner one. Well I ordered my fedora from Todds and I recieved it! A great surprise when I got home from work today! Well I'm gonna post a few pics if I know how. When I opened the shipping box I saw that the hat was in another box! It's a very cool hat box, didn't expect that, but am very happy. Now I got a place to store it! I also got the bag with the 65" strap, looks great but gotta distress it now. Well I guess I dont know how to post the pic, If anybody can help me, it would be greatly apreciated!Thanks...David

Hi dnn1314,
You have posted a Link to the Album (and it works great, I can see everything, no problem)... but don't forget that you have another option for posting Pictures - or Links to individual pictures - right in the very Post you make in a given Thread:
When you use your mouse to hover the cursor over a Photobucket Thumbnail picture, it immediately shows you a list of different methods of linking back to that photo. The two I use most often are "Image Code" and "Direct Link". The "Image Code" one means that posting it in a Thread like this one we're writing in will result in showing the actual picture... The "Direct Link" one means it will be a Link for those reading your post to click on themselves to open a new window showing them the image. Clicking on the address they give you for each kind of Image or Link instantly makes you a copy of it to paste in a posting just like this one.

As an example, here... I've just clicked on the Image Code address of your hat sitting on the Coyle's Box... now I'll paste that address below:

DELETE

Ooops. I just did it (but then UNdid it: It was too big!)

What you (and the rest of us) would have seen was the actual picture... and it WAS there for just a second, but then I realized that your original image was 1023 x 764 pixels (which, is a problem because there's a limit here at C.O.W. ...images should be no more than 600 x 800 pixels... so, if you ever want to do this sort of thing, simply re-size your image before posting links here)
I should also mention that there is a limit of 6 images and 6 links per user per Thread. If you've got something you really want to show folks here and you need more than 6 pictures to do it, your options are to either link back to the whole album (just like you've done) OR to use an assortment of Image and Direct Links (but again, no more than 6 of each)

Hope this helps you with posting stuff in the future... You didn't do anything wrong with your Link, but I just thought I'd do you the favor of saving you the time of figuring out some of those other little tricks...

NICE photos, by the way... And Congrats on both the jacket and hat!
Cheers!
