Post by bodhidiver »

do 6ft/ 8ft and 10ft bullwhip handles (made by the same whipmaker) have the same diameter/thickness and just have varying lenghts of the tapered portion of the thong? or are the handle thickness increasing with proportion to the length of the overall whip?

Generally they are the same diameter (unless specified by the buyer). The degree of taper of course is going to be more radical on a 6 footer compared to a 10. That to me is a good thing being the whip cracker because you do want consistency from whip to whip. To a whipmaker, that is also fantastic since you need to have one method.

Well put, Sergei. I make all of my whips with the same formula. The only thing that really changes with the length is the taper. Like you said, it will be more "radical", or drastic on a 6 footer, while on a 10 or 12 it will be very gradual.

Yep, What Sergei said! :) Under normal circumstances, the same bullwhip model made by the same whipmaker even at different lengths should have the same diameter handle. The length of the taper and the weight of the whip of course will vary between the 6, 8 and 10 foot bullwhips.

So do whips made by different makers have different girths(is that a word?). As far as I can tell from pictures, morgans look like they have a wider diameter girth above the handle then strains.

Can anyone who owns both a morgan and a strain comment on the diamter of the whips at their thickest point? Are they identical?

thanks.

I don't own a Morgan, but I have handled one that was made in 2001 (I think it was 2001 or 2000). It was a 10 foot Morgan, and my Strain is 8ft, but the start of the thong of the Morgan was maybe 1/4" thicker. It felt slightly more substantial, but I personally liked the feel of the Strain better (just my personal preference).

However, I'm not an expert on whips, so somebody else with more experience would have a more informed opinion than me.

Hi, Usually whips made by different makers will have different girths, it all depends on their preferences and what you ask for. Most ethical whip makers, however; will not copy another persons whip exactly out of respect. There no set rule as to how thick or thin the handle has to be.

In recent years David Morgan has bulked up the handles on his Indy whip’s so that’s probably why they look thicker compared to the Joe Strain’s or other WSP Indy style bullwhips you’ve been seeing lately. The older DMs, which I actually like better myself, have the thinner handles more like what is seen in the Movies and more like the JS and WSP bullwhips that are made currently. Now It’s been a while since I actually intentionally compared the two, but from what I do remember the older Morgan’s and WSP copy were pretty darn close in diameter. I don’t know the level of accuracy you looking for but if you took a caliper to them there might be a very slight difference. Keeping in mind though, that thay are hand made so even with a group the exact same type whips made by the same person there can be a slight variance in the measurements, usually nothing too noticeable though. Hope this helps

Plus, you will also get slight differences from whip to whip depending on the thickness of the hides used in all parts of the whip.
