Indy's Sunglasses

While we've all seen him in casual clothing, loungewear, adventurewear, even in a tunic, Indy doesn't wear sunglasses. I don't know how available sunglasses were in the 30's but sunglasses have been shown to be beneficial for optical health.
SOo, What type of sunglasses do you think Indy would wear, and you can include modern day styles since he's never seen in movies actually wearing them, This can be played around with?

I like to think that, because of his ties to James Bond, Indy wears Persols as well, even if it is a bit anachronistic. Steve McQueen also wore Persol, so they are kind of a "tough guy" brand of sunglasses. My own personal pair are an aviator like style. I posted this picture over in the haircut thread, but I'll post a link to it here so you can look at the sunglasses.

I thought of the Ray Ban's also. But, he might choose something more outdoorsish, like Costa Del Mar they're polarized and some are rugged looking.

I love the Persol 649/714 but even in the smallest size it just swallows my face. I also like the older Wayfarers from before the Luxottica buy out of Bausch and Lomb but they're very generic now. I just don't understand why they have to have Ray Ban logos all over the place now. The Wayfarers from even ten years ago had plain buttons on the side and no logo on the lens, save a very small BL etched into the outside edge of each lens. Much classier in my opinion. The old large Wayfarers, the Wayfarer II, had the Ray Ban logo on the temple but not the lens. Don't even get me started on the awful spring hinges. The glass is much too heavy for those.

This thread is not helping my situation. Until tonight, I've been wearing Ray Ban Aviators with my fedoras. I say "until tonight" because they just lept out of my pocket, and a lens shattered into a hundred pieces on the floor. :evil:

I was trying to find MINE on the Internet as I'm too lazy to go to my car and get mine. I own a vintage pair of goggles. Wirerim with leather sides to protect from the elements. Love 'em. They've already helped me out in ONE sandstorm in Death Valley. Anywho I found this site. Think I'll be getting me a set here as well.

What makes you think that? True there were no Persol 649s or Wayfarers in the thirties but there were plenty of horn, real tortoise, and celluloid frames which for all intents and purposes are the equivalent of today's acetate frames. What do you think covered the outer rim of the Algha style glasses, which were made by a ton of companies from different areas?

Yup, im an aviator man myself. The whole get up has that very WWII Pilot-ish looks with the bomber "styled jacket and officers pinks so to me it would seem reasonable he would have worn avaitors

No, I got that much. I just meant which style frames would you want?

If it's the small tortoise round, try http://www.operaopera.net/ and look in the round section. I would suggest looking through the whole site though as they have some great glasses. Also http://www.angloamericanopticalltd.com/collections.html

These are a couple of Schnuchel frames with an Anglo. They're very nice but you'd have to find a boutique optician to get them. Strange, small company that doesn't have a catalog or zyl chips, the optician just has to kinda go on faith. Just do a search for Schuchel eyewear.

If it's the metal style I posted, ebay is your friend, I picked up those with the clip NOS for around $85.

If it's the aviators or other metals, I've only seen good ones in vintage.

I remember going through my father's WW II memorabilia and finding the sunglasses he wore in Europe. They had celluloid or plastic frames. I know you can still get those glacier glasses (the really dark ones with the leather bellows at the sides) in a lot of mountaineering stores.

Speaking of nothing, that looks more like Gabby _ than HF in those Foster Grants...

Here's my entries. Serengeti Driver 'Antiguas'...In Black and Tortoise. They stopped making them in '98 or so...I keep hunting for more on Ebay, because they've become my signature style.....Not to mention they're around the same shape and size as Indy's 'specs'...

...And they don't look bad with a Fedora and leather jacket, either....

The unfortunate thing about what indy sunglasses would be, is that sunglasses are more specific to certain facial features than hats. Not everyone looks good in aviator glasses and since Indy didn't wear sunglasses in movies, we have no SA comparisons

While we could speculate what indy WOULD have worn, we may never really know and for that I think I can submit that the glasses should fit the wearer and be durable, fit to take decent punishment but go well with the rest of the gear.

Algha/Berkshire still make that style if ebay ever runs out of the Serengetis. Believe me, I understand. Oliver Peoples is finally making more classic styles again but the past few years I've been keeping ebay busy looking for NOS frames.

I think I'm going to start having zyl frames made. It's no more expensive than high end designer frames and I can get just the style I want in the color I want.

Have you tried to special order them from Frames Direct? I know the size isn't listed on their site but that doesn't mean they won't order them for you.

Call Berkshire Chase directly. They have that size listed on their site so hopefully they could direct you to a dealer that carries it.

If nothing else I know a dealer in Atlanta I can refer you to but you'll have to pay full price.

Youknow, the way I see it, my guess is that indy just wouldn't wear sunglasses, becouse they would get dirty, or break easely when you pull stunts like he does

I think his way of keeping his eyes out of the sun is his fedora

Anyways, if you would like some sunglasses to fit you, then try to find some that fit YOU instead of some that fit indiana.

I wore aviators back in the day, but they pluck your eyebrows out everytime you take them off. Then I bought my long-coveted Ray-Ban Predator 2's when Men In Black II came out (I couldn't afford them in high school, back when the first movie popularized them), and I have been wearing them daily for the last six years. VERY BAD IDEA!! Most Ray-bans, including Predators, have glass lenses which aren't made for protection and will shatter under the right circumstances. If you want to use sunglasses for protection, use something with a polycarbonate lens, preferably something that's rated for safety. Nothing against Ray-ban, I have a pair of predators myself, but I use Wiley X sunglass/goggles when I ride my motorcycle.

These are definitely polycarbonate, else I wouldn't have considered them...They wrap around and fit very close, so they're really suited to the task....

Good then. The Predator 2's were mentioned and I know they're glass. A couple of the other predators I've had, namely the Raider, tsk, tsk, were poly but almost all of them are glass.

Funny thing about glass, my optician tells me I'm the only patient he has that always requests glass for my reading glasses. Glass is so much more scratch resistant and the optics are much better but they're just no good for sports/activities. Much too heavy and like mentioned will shatter.

I'm glad you know what to use, but the not everyone has the info so I have to preach it to everyone.

Gobo, if you like the style any optician can cut poly lenses for your wayfarer frames.

You really need to contact Berkshire or even Algha directly. Berkshire and Frames Direct told me the glasses were absolutely unavailable in rhodium(white gold). Peter from Algha said I could order them from him directly no problem at all.

A fedora won't block glare from directly in front or below, be it other cars, water, sand, snow, concrete, etc.

I'm not sure about the time limit on resurrecting threads, but what could be more appropriate to this forum than digging up old things?

In any case, I didn't want to start a new thread on an existing topic.

Since I'm starting to wear my Indy gear in public, I needed some period-appropriate sunglasses. I read this thread and then started looking around. I found, on eBay, a vendor selling Clubmaster knock-offs for 13 bucks with free shipping. Amber glass lenses, faux tortoise and gold metal frames. They'll do...for now. (I plan to get some Savile Row specs for reading as well.)

Might as well show a couple of mine that would be period appropriate.

First one is totally custom. Completely satisfied with the outside shape but the lens shape needs a little more tweaking. May also go with an even more yellow tortoise. The lenses are vintage mid century smoke green glass.

Others are Oliver Peoples O'Malley. Also with vintage glass lenses. The amber tortoise pic is a little goofy but the case and cloth they sent with them were too cool not to share.

These are some neat old Bausch and Lomb safety glasses. Chris O'Donnell wore the same kind in Batman Forever when he pulled up on the Norton Commando.

Man I looked for those things for fifteen years. Thought they were some high end modern steampunk style thing like Linda Hamilton's T2 Matsudas or Charlie Sheen's The Arrival Vogues. Even saw a somewhat similar pair from JPGaultier. A friend did some bluray screen caps for me and I pinned them down a couple of months ago. American Optical made a very similar frame also.

By the way, they also come in a P3 shape like your RayBans.
