I think its personal preference more than anything.

I have read that the Drings have trouble on the thin leathers (ie. lamskin)
I have cowhide and they work fine (and I think look great!)

I have the D-rings in antique brass on my Wested TOD lambstouch I really like them... I loop the strap back under the rings so it looks real nice if you prefer not having the straps show as much. :) Brett

I found problems with my lambskin & D-rings (slipped out of position all the time), but no probs with my new cowhide & D-rings - those things stay put!

I have D-rings on my lambskin LC jacket and sliders on my Raiders goat. In the beginning the D-rings slipped out all the time, but now they work just fine. I think it is a matter of what you like best (look wise) and what type of leather you plan to get (lamb vs. sometihng stiffer).

BTW, I also have buckles on my TOD lambskin.

Easy fix for slippage in D-Rings: Thin strip of black electrical tape wrapped around one of the rings. Very thin, not visible, provides "grab." Cheers--Lao Feng

Or you can just spin the "d" rings around 180 degrees so that
the flat side is facing OUT instead of in.

This does two things. One, they will now look like the rectangular
sliders that everyone loves. And two, they will grip the leather
better.

I have done this both on my Wested and Wings Indy jackets,
and it works great!

I went with the D-Rings, its just easier to adjust them if you need to when the jackets on.

How'd you guys "re-do" those D-rings on your jackets to make them look like the slider buckles? Mine don't want to seem to budge at all......I have an old Wested, Dark brown Lamb, that I may experiment on

I've got rectangular buckles on my Raiders goat. I agree with above posts, it's mostly personal preference. I would listen to what they say about d-rings and softer leather, though.

flathead,,,,,you're a genius, way cool advice!!!!!!
Why thank you! :D Now if only the babes would think this too, I would
be all set!!

I actually came across this quite by accident. I was having problems
like everyone else with the lambskin straps coming loose from the d-rings.

So, I started to mess with the straps and found out that you could
pull on the straps from the front of the jacket, and they will pull thru
the d-rings very easily when the round part is out like it normally is.

But I found that if I took the jacket off, and tried to pull the straps
from the back instead, they got tighter, just like the straps on a
motorcycle helmet do when you pull them from the outside.

So, I just put 2 and 2 together, and spun the d-rings around until
the flat side was now facing out, and presto! The straps don't come
loose anywhere near as easlily as they did before.

Since most of you got the D-Ring fasteners, may I conclude that's what was used in the movies?

It depends which movie and which scene you are going for.

I've been searching the DVD for any signs of D rings on the Raiders jacket and I simply cannot find any. If ANYONE can PLEASE let me know exactly which scene you see them in, otherwise it's the rectangular black fasteners you want for screen accuracy. Also, I've noticed that the Raiders jackets did have the X-box pattern where the side straps attach to the jacket. Peter had it right all along and he was steered away from it at some point, and by COW members I believe.
This has been a debate for some time as to which were actually used so I challenge anyone to find and post any finds in the film or in any pics, different from the info I've posted above.

I'll be waiting.

The first Wested jackets I received from Peter back in 97 did not have the box stitch, but was sewn directly into the side seam of the jacket. These constantly tore out when somebody attempted to use the side entry pockets. When I alerted him to the problem he emailed me that he had printed off my 'alert' and had posted it on the bulletin board at the factory so everybody was aware of the problem. He then switched to the box stitch. Why (and when) he switched back is a mystery to me, as the last one I got from him has them. Interesting. Regards. Michaelson

Thanks Michaelson, interesting tidbit. I wonder why he switched back too. I think it was the result of someone ordering it that way or perhaps an influx of people who wanted them done that way. Either way, it's good to know you can just order it however you'd like. However, the DVD's have shown a new light into the D ring controversy for me, at least in Raiders.
I can see in LC they were the D rings. Of course, Peter may have provided D rings for Raiders as he has stated in the past and it's possible they were switched after delivery. Someone who used to frequent the boards said something about the original side fasteners being painted black. Anything is possible.

One thing is for sure. Watching the DVD's on my computer has been like watching them all over again. Sooooo much detail in the backround and things you've never been able to see before.

I remember the 'side fastener painted black' posts as well. MAN, that was a while ago, wasn't it? Sometimes I wonder if the DVD's are a blessing or curse, don't you? (grins) Regards. Michaelson

I think they're a total blessing. Regardless of who put on what and when, I know what's there off of the film and that's what I want. Things that were not fully visible on any of the VHS copies or even the laserdiscs are now clear as night and day. Images can be blown up quite a bit and they're still very clear. This is what I've been waiting for and I'm lovin' every minute of it. :D

Hi there

Some of you mention that D-rings might disfunction with soft (lamb)leather. I am going to order my LC jacket in goat. Will the D-rings hold? By the way, are D-rings screen accurate on the LC?

Greetz and have a nice weekend,

I'm no expert like some on the LC jacket but while watching the DVD's the other day, I noticed they were D-rings on that jacket. Just pull out the movie and have a look for yourself. The proof is right there.

I have read your post about how to fix d-rings on lamb if they slip. Has anyone tried to replace them with sliders themslelves. A second question would be where can you buy sliders for jackets?

Am I correct in what I am seeing. Do the raiders side straps go under the seams closest to the handwarmer slits in the movie? My wested has the straps sewn on the outside...
