Oiling up my kid's close-enough

I got this "The Children's Place" jacket for my kid on the Bay for about $22. Cowhide, I assume. Not sure what the technical term for the finish is, but it's sort of fuzzy, somewhere between smooth/shiny and suede.

After seeing lantzn's thread on using Obenauf's on a Nowak (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=53408&p=772983" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), I was inspired to apply neatsfoot oil for a more Raiders-y look. (I was almost finished before I realized I should have tested it vs. Pecard's first. Ah, well.) Anyway, my son and I are pleased with the results, even if my wife isn't fond of the smell. By the time he really grows into it, it should look fantastic.

Nice! I like the darker color. The finish it has I believe is called "brushed". My new jacket has a brushed finish and seems to feel just as you described.

I have always liked that style of jacket! I see it working for an 'Indy-close enough,' and for a 'dead on' McGyver ! W>

On Wikipedia I read neatsfoot oil can leave an oily residue that attracts dust. I didn't know what it was and so looked it up. I can tell you this after applying a good. Coat of Obenaufs there was no oily residue at all. It just got soft and smooth as a baby's behind.

It looks nice....but...neatsfoot oil is not Obenauf's.

At the risk of sounding like a smart aleck... I knew that.

If it becomes really offensive, I'll start over.

Obenaufs oil definitely has an oder but I don't recall the paste having one. It's been awhile and they do go on differently. it's not offensive to me though and it's dissipating. The jacket is starting to lighten in areas now. Once it does I think I'll seal it with the paste.

In my limited experience, I'm very pleased with neatsfoot oil for my lambskin jackets and smooth cow jackets, boots and pants. It might not have been the best thing for this particular leather and/or finish, though. It feels moist still, but the oil doesn't rub off, so there's that. I used Lexol on my goatskin per Tundrarider's recommendations, and have no complaints. I'll bet leathers have their own preferences.

Considering neatsfoot is yellow oil rendered and purified from the shin bones and feet (but not the hooves) of cattle, I'll stick with the ph balanced dressings myself.

So yeah, um, that oil thing we were talking about? Turns out neatsfoot wasn't the right way to go with this jacket. It's slowly starting to develop a none-too-pleasing odor. (And every time I see it, I hear "pH-balanced dressings" in my head...)

Any recommendations? Can I machine-wash it and start over? Supposing I can, what (if anything) would you recommend that I apply?

I guess you can try this. I don't know if there's any way to reverse rancid neatsfoot oil after it's started going 'south'.
