Raiders "temple jacket" finish question

Post by Oildale Jones »

Yes, I used the Search function. Yes, I read the results. No, I did not find my answer.

Recently, while looking at still frames of the "entering the temple" scene in Raiders, I noticed that the finish of the jacket is much shinier than any of my jackets, and apparently smoother, and although it moves and drapes freely, it appears almost brittle. Crispy. :) So I started wondering why, and what the difference was between that jacket's finish and all the others I've seen, and wondering whether the screen jacket wasn't really lambskin after all (or if it was, then why no one could—or would—match the finish).

I won another XL Bantu Wind the other day (yes, you could say I really like this jacket). It's in great shape but it's much grainier all over than my previous BW. It's also much shinier and has almost that temple jacket sheen on some parts. It's not exactly supple; it feels very dry in the shiny spots, and looks like a crack is starting in one spot. (I have other vintage leather products so I'm no stranger to cracking.)

So is the "secret" to the temple jacket's shiny finish that it's almost completely bone dry?

(If necessary, I can take and upload photos. Thanks.)

there is tons of posts about this. the jacket you are ferring to is the jacket Tony Nowak copied and is not smooth. it's a grainy textured lambskin. And the shiny part is playing a trick on you. stage lights etc.

look at the well of souls jacket when he is climing up on the statue, look how shiny it is and now look at the same jacket outside with the mechanic.
