% of hats with real wear vs. Fullers? Show your dusty hats!
How many of the hats in this forum that have that dusty ring around the hatband are made with real world adventure compared to using something like Fuller's earth?
I'm so dying to get my AB CS and am anxious to have that look.

Re: % of hats with real wear vs. Fillers?
I wear my hats everyday. The hat that comes close to getting the ribbon stains like you see on Indy's is my Cairo hat and this is because I removed the sweatband. None of my hats that have the sweatband ever mess with the ribbon. ...... I wonder if that is why they call it a sweatband.......
The dust is "real world" though.

I've never intentionally dirtied my hat--but it's picked up a lot of dust from the seasons of excavating in Israel. Here's a good example of my AB CS from summer 2009:
There are more pics of it in these threads:

It's been cleaned and re-blocked since then, but I'm sure it'll get dusty again. Hope these help!
Best wishes,
Nebraska Schulte

Mine gets worn daily, year-round. Dust, sweat, rain, snow - it all adds up to "character". Somewhere I'm groping for a way to relate real-world use and artificial distressing with a piece of advice I got long ago - "Don't hire characters, hire people with character".

Considering that my hats some how are magnets for dog-hair, I find myself constantly brushing them to keep the hair off of them... so my hats never get the chance to be dirty.

John's Indy beaver hat accompanied me during my first dig, and sparked a SoC craze during the summer. I just wore it as Indy might have worn it. Thing is, when the hat gets to this stage... ....it needs a good reblock!
Re: % of hats with real wear vs. Fullers? Show your dusty h
My Penman rabbit, having sat on the hat tree next to my front door for about 2 months (just haven't been wearing hats that much lately).
Arizona dust + a house built in 1922 that's not well sealed = instant distressing in 2 months!

Wish I had pics from my trip to WV in April; my Fed IV got some nice action and looked really good and dirty after that but it's all washed away in the rain since and now I'm forced to emulate with Fuller's.....

John you can offer that as a distress option and call it the Penman "Smelt".BendingOak wrote:Texan Scott wrote:John's Indy beaver hat accompanied me during my first dig, and sparked a SoC craze during the summer. Havershaw those are some great looking glasses. I'm due to upgrade my beat up pair and was wondering if you could tell me the make and model of them?
Re: % of hats with real wear vs. Fullers? Show your dusty h
Thanks!
They are vintage Tart Arnels. made by Tart Optical from the 40s - 70s. This pair is from the mid 50s.
There are a lot of companies who make reproductions that are much cheaper than finding a vintage pair...but it's pretty much just like Indy hats. You can get a DP or a HJ or just find originals, and discerning nerds (of course I include myself in that) will see a huge difference from one to the other.
I will pm you further info (to help keep this thread on track).

I have a hat that looked like that because I had inadvertantly left it next to the electric clothes dryer outlet for a while.havershaw wrote:

Thanks!
It's a 1940s Monarch, one of my favorites, which I've had about 2 1/2 years.
Don't think I've ever posted anything about it on here before, so I just did:
http://indygear.com/cow/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=53504" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Not the best photos, but all I could muster temporarily.
I love me some vintage leather!

This AB isn't really dusty ... just sweaty with lots of salt stains.
You can see how much it has faded too.
