How to distress a roo whip SOC style

Post by iwantamorganreelbad1 »

Hello,
I asked a good friend of mine if he could do an SOC distressing on the whip I have yet to purchase from him. He said that he didn't do that because he didn't know how. To all those whipmakers out there, Do you know how to distress a Roo whip SOC style?

For instance, this pic by DarenHenry is a good example of distressing like I'm looking for.

The real whip:

My advice is to use it and crack it a lot. Try using it on dirt roads, gravel, and concrete. Don't overdo it as it could damage the whip. The more dusty the area the better. Hope this helps.

I've heard of that working for some other people as well. One guy mentioned he tied it to the back of his car and dragged through a dirt road. I dont know how good that must be for the whip though.

Unless your planning on dying tomorrow just let the whip age naturally. Dirt is not a whips friend and dragging behind a car is crazy. Yeah, I'm going to take my Morgan and drag it behind a car. ](*,)

Hey, we read of folks taking their expensive jackets and taking belt sanders to them all the time. Why not a whip? :-k :P

I'm pretty sure that Dusty achieves his "SOC" look by using leather dyes.
Quite honestly, I don't think it is necessary.

Any natural colored whip will darken with use, particularly the last few feet (this is the part that gets the most NATURAL abuse during use).

Like Holt said, just let it age naturally.

If you want it to look like the screen used one, use pecards and then fullers earth.
