Hello everyone! A short update concerning the backpacks. I'll get 6 packs in soon, as a test run.
There is one small obstacle, and that is my colleague who can do the leatherwork. He's in the US until the end of august, so I don't know if he can do it at all, and in any case it won't be before early september. But packs without the tag are ready soon.

Nihil,

I personally have no problem waiting until your fellow gets back if it means the possibility of having a label put on the bag. I'm in no hurry, so just letting you know.

My colleague was positive about making the labels, he'll make a test example when he returns.
It's possible that we can make them with different initials, unless the process requires him to make a specific tool to make the letters.
What are people willing to pay for a label? What about a customized one?

Here is the waiting list for the packs.
As soon as I got a price for the labels, I'll let you know both here and in the bazaar.

Cool 8)
Our own initials would be a neat feature but not a must have part for the pack.
Looking forward to the updates.

Nihil,
Great stuff mate, thanks! :TOH:

Ahhh...I was talking to the GF just last week about how I was on the look out for a new backpack...Of course, I had in mind the one here, but in Japan, German army rucksacks seem to be rather rare...LOL

Thanks for adding me to the list!

And yeah, I'm also in no particular rush....As and when you can do them (or your friend can), I'm good for it...

Warmest regards. :TOH:

Yes, thats my estimate. I'll have the final shipping price when I got the packs (around 2 weeks).
I can't say anything about deliverytime, except that I wont take payment from anyone unless I got a pack ready to ship in return. And then I'll ship right away after I have received a payment (or in the following 1-3 days).

The first 4 backpacks have arrived. They look exactly like the one above.
There have been a previous run of these packs, of an inferior quality. These are not the same.

I'll be contacting the first 3 persons on the list (yes, I'll keep one myself ;) ) soon, to sort everything out.

About the leather patches. My colleague are returning from the US at the end of next week, and then we'll look into what it'll cost to have either SA or custom name labels made.

Nihil,

I was just reviewing your thread and posts on the bag and wanted to inquire about the straps on them. I used to own a reproduction of the German rucksack and on that particular one, it had what they call "pleather" straps. They seemed to be a leather, but a VERY THIN leather and nothing like the originals which are quite thick and sturdy. I was wondering if these bags you're getting have the thick leather straps similar to the originals or if they're a thinner "pleather" type. If possible, could you measure the thickness of the straps. I can then compare that to know as well.

Thanks and just thought I'd check as the reproduction one I used to own I wouldn't spend 2 cents on with those pleathery type of straps - I honestly swear with a little tension on them they'd snap easily... but not the ones on the originals! :)

I just got my backpack yesterday from Nihil. Excellent reproduction of the original german mountain backpack (i have one from Ebay). The straps are real leather, not the thin pleather that you are talking about (i have one of these cheap repros also).
Thanks again Nihil! :TOH:

Indy30, thank you for the kind words :)

I had also seen the cheap replica before I ordered these, and they are miles apart.

I'll get more packs in a few weeks, and hopefully my colleague are going to have some results with the HJ labels soon.

I think they are worth the price, especially when I saw that some of you paid nearly 200 bucks for such a rucksack.
With shipping to Poland the cost is: 1st one - 60.4 USD, 2nd one - 30.9 USD. If anyone would like to buy the backpack from them, I could help you, shipping to States is 29 USD, so it's still cheap.
What do you think?
Cheers
Tomek

Edit: I just saw that the cheaper one hasn't got leather straps, so the first one is more SA. However you can order the second one and change it yourself.
about 68 bucks altogether for us?

For the second one, yes about 68 USD, but the first one is more SA.

Well, no one really knows for sure, but I did some different dimensional cut outs from index cards and laid them between the leather straps on the flap cover and the one I felt looked proportionally correct was approx. 2" x 4" if I remember right. I've still go the cut-out somewhere, just can't recall off-hand right now where I put it. But the best answer would be - it all depends on (a) what you think looks good for your bag or (b) whatever the person who's making you a label think looks the best.

Hope this helps. :TOH:

We haven't seen a screen used Rucksack emerge anywhere after the film for inspection. Not even pics. So, it is speculation at this point.

I made mine 1 5/8"x 2 5/8".

Happy leatherworking! :D

Michael :TOH:
I recently acquired one of Michaels fantastic rucksacks with the label. Its a wonderful item and certainly one I'll keep for as long as I breathe…

I will post pics as soon as I can but at the moment I'm totally snowed under with work.

Thanks again Michael - its a beauty!

I'm getting 8 more packs in a few weeks.

The custom leather tags seem to be a dead end, but we're still looking into HJ tags.

Thanks :TOH: . A friend of mine has all the material needed.
And after one hour of leatherworking, this is what we come up with :

Of course, it's far from perfect and far from Michaels amazing labels. But, it's a start.
We are already working on some new and more accurate ones ;) .

Great work!

I got a question regarding the labels myself: Which 'style' do people prefer for them? The more artistic and complicated version as realized by Tundrarider, or the more basic option where the HJ is basically just etched in the top of the label ? I must admit that I personally see it as the tag in KOTCS is just made the easy way?

Im personally not a fan of a highly stylized label as i dont see it as something Indy would have had on his bag. Something plain and simple :)

Michael's actual design I think is spot on...The design is a very good one...I'm not sure what you mean by his "artistic" style as opposed to the "simple etch" style though....His IS a simple etch, surely? Just a very well designed one?

Any photos you could link to to give me an idea of what two different designs you mean?

Thanks! :TOH:

Yeah, I think Micheal's is perfect. I also agree the Dr. Jones I know and love is NOT the type to have something monogrammed. And yet there it is. I would really like to have one of these packs, but if I did go for the monogrammed label I would go with MY initials. I do have some leather I got from Wade... :-k

My intials are B.O.S.S. (Benjamin Oliver Stephen Sharples) so I tend to stay away from monogrammed items because people will assume that I'm just taking the mick....LOL :rolling:

Michael...LOL...Cooooooooold...... :rolling:

I think either way I'm not in a favourable situation for monogrammed items of clothing..Heh  Ah well...If I had a little more ego going with "B.O.S.S." would be fine I guess...Although it would look too close to another famous designer...So...Stumped... ;)

Maybe.....Maybe someday! :-k

And, historical/national errors aside, if Indy is carrying a rucksack he used in the service, I see the monogram patch as an 'artistic interpretation' of the military senciling of his initials/name on all his property.

It was a mirror of the scene in LC when Indy did something (mind blanking at the moment) and turned and laughed and looked at Henry, who was not impressed at all.

I think that was an undertone of CS...that Indy had become just like Henry.

Yup, Indy also says " intolerable " when escaping from the Russians in the jungle (just after Mutt smashes the lantern) just like his father does in LC :)

Thanks to Nihil I now have a sparkly new repro old style bag to go with my modern one.

The modern version and it is a better design, the straps are far easier to use and it is thicker. But the original style is far more screen authentic!

Image

I will probably still use the modern one for short trips, but the old style one is definitely one for the collection and no 50 year 'Army storage smell!'.

I was flipping over to Crystal Skull during the Patriots game commercials (I don't know which was more painful to watch, the Pats game or CS), and I thought how Indy had turned out like Henry when on the motorcycle Mutt and Indy watch the KGB slam into the statue of Marcus. His head falls through the windshield, and Mutt turns and laughs to Indy, who did NOT look impressed. It was a mirror of the scene in LC when Indy did something (mind blanking at the moment) and turned and laughed and looked at Henry, who was not impressed at all.

I think that was an undertone of CS...that Indy had become just like Henry.
That was one of the things I liked about CS. And throughout the series as they 'grow' Indy as a character. ;)

My backpack came last week from Nihil and it too is awesome for a repro and I cant thank him enough. I know i will be able to get some good use out of this!

Guess what kind of backpack the character Shane was wearing in tonight's episode of The Walking Dead?
