New Value Line Whip from Bernardo DelCarpio

Post by fifthchamber »

Hi all...

Thought that some here might appreciate a look at the whip Bernardo has just made for me (Not arrived yet, sometime this week, so more photos to follow I'm sure)..

This is from his "Value Line", and has a kip core, belly and bolster, and a Roo overlay...I asked for an 8 foot, 12 plait overlay and it looks absolutely stunning in my opinion..The handle is essentially a "Raiders" flavour, but I asked Bernardo to style it a "touch" closer to the Last Crusade style for me, meaning it's a little thicker than his normal Raiders....

I'll post more when it arrives, but since this arrived from Bernardo today, I kinda HAD to yell about it here...

Enjoy!

Thanks for the wonderful job Bernardo, really a pleasure working with you mate....And all the very best for next time too!

That looks wonderful! I love Bernardo's work - and my only complaint about my whip from Bernardo was that it wasn't as light blonde as yours is there. That's just beautiful!

Congrats on a beautiful whip. Don't treat her too roughly! :whip:

Thank you Shane!
Congrats on a beautiful whip. Don't treat her too roughly!
Since this beauty will be taking up time from my girlfriend, did you mean the whip? Or did you mean my girlfriend?! ;) (I'll be trying to balance both...But I have a feeling that for the first week my girlfriend may lose that fight...I'll have to work out a week where she's busy with work so she doesn't notice me "cheating on her"... :Plymouth: )

That's one good looking whip Daren!,
I was wondering how the feel is on that, having a kip core & Roo overlay?
is it a little more springy than an all roo hide whip?
Just wondering???

Beautiful looking whip Fifth! Can't wait to see how it looks with the rest of your great gear!
Do you mind if I inquire about the price? I'd love to pick up a whip that looks that good for a price that doesn't leave me eating eggs and ramen for months.

I made a whip completely out of kip ( my first one ) and it actually ended up much less springy than a roo. There was however a

couple reasons why I cannot say for sure why this would be a constant:

1, the "kip" was in fact calf, which is basically kip, but its softer and supposedly stronger.

2, the "kip" was the same thickness as roo, 2- 3oz. split down to 2 oz.

3, My strands were very NOT uniform, so it caused crowding in some areas, thus not as tight a braid.

4, the braid wasn't very tight, I was plaiting like I would nylon.

Trex, I would imagine that this whip form bernado would be a little less springy than one of your jacka's. Jacka uses thick cowhide

as interiors, this being less thick cowhide would be slightly less, this is just what makes sense to me...

Adventure, the price for his "Value Line" whips are 400 dollars for the 8 footers, and 500 for the 10's I believe...I paid the 8 foot price plus tracked shipping...

Yuji, thanks Sir! I hope it'll arrive this week! そして、是非皆と一緒に鞭の練習しましょうね! :TOH:

Riku, I think Bernardo uses a fairly thick kip...Although I'd agree, not Jacka sized..So yes, slightly less "springy"...I'll let you know more when it arrives of course..

He probably uses english kip thats 1.2-1.4mm in thickness. I was referring the springiness because cowhide over kip ,which is a

young cow, but not quite calf age, a teenager if you will, is MUCH more springy than kip. since jacka uses only cow for the interior,

it explains why 1, his whips are thicker than normals and 2, the transitions are much stiffer.

Trex...

Don't worry mate, I took it entirely as a compliment..Daren is a great bloke, and mistaking me for him is no bad thing at all in my opinion.. :TOH:

I usually try and write my name on my posts or in my signature line, since I'm NOT "fifthchamber", I'm Ben..And I don't really understand people who use screen names to hide themselves behind when online...I am what I am and my name here doesn't change that...<Gets off box>...

All of which has nowt to do with your post...LOL...My bad..

It hasn't arrived yet, but I'm hoping today or tomorrow... :TOH:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA :rolling: :rolling: :rolling:

Sorry, I found that whole thing very funny, probably just because I have so many Del Carpios, it doesn't surprise me that TREX saw a Del Carpio and assumed it was another for me. (I am expecting another Del Carpio, in fact).

But seriously, Ben, I may be taller, but I am certainly NOT better looking. You are quite handsome, and you look fantastic in your adventure gear as well as your suits!

Enjoy YOUR whip, may it give you many, many years of joy, as I'm sure it will, and congratulations on a fabulous purchase. You can NOT go wrong with a Del Carpio!

Cheers!

I just heard from my girlfriend, Miho, that the whip has arrived at home and is waiting for me (and woke her up...She's not vexed though.. ).. So I'll have photos up by tonight I hope, and perhaps a brief report about how it feels..I won't be able to use it until tomorrow sometime, since I'm working today, but as soon as I can I'll post the review...

So happy I don't think I can concentrate on work....Not such a huge problem...Yet...(Focus...Focus....LOL)..

Watch this space. :TOH:

Ben,

Can't wait to see it!
I'd love to have one of Bernardo's Raiders whips.
They are about as close to a 1980's Morgan you can get without the use of a time machine.

By the way, you can just call me Kevin.
Don't want you to think I'm hidin' anything from you!

Kevin...LOL..No worries mate...I won't ask for a photo of you standing with today's newspaper and your driving license.....Yet... ;) :rolling:

Well...I got home and the package was waiting for me....First impressions...Golden...This thing is lovely..It has a certain spring to it that I didn't notice in the Joe Strain I had used before, and I would guess that's partially due to the kip? It's not at all stiff like the Jacka though..I just got back from using it a little in the park with my GF and it rolls out wonderfully..Really "alive" in my hands...Cracking with it was far easier than I've found it before, although that may be just experience kicking in some? It's heavy, but not so much, and although it wears me out after about an hour or throwing it about, and my right forearm is still rather "pumped", I found it to be a perfect weight for me...Not too heavy, and not stiff either...A very "alive" piece of craftsmanship..

Here are some of the photos I and my girlfriend Miho took (She's a GREAT photographer actually! And she tried the whip out some too..Albeit gingerly....I'll work on getting her to throw it about properly sometime..)..

The whole whip

Thanks "Sixth"!! ;)

Yeah, Miho took some great shots....I was highly impressed by her eye for that..She also tried to swing the whip too, and although she couldn't snap it, she did get some admiring looks from passers-by!! :P

I think it's something you grow into right? This being my "first whip" means I've started off okay I reckon...And with a good base I hope I can work up to being decent-ish before I die...The path is a fun one though..I've already seen that side of it...

I'm just VERY happy that I could kick it off with this....Thanks Bernardo. :notworthy:

And thanks Daren..For the talk today as well! Someday, you and Sarah will have to come over to Tokyo and meet up with the "Far-Eastern-Branch" of the "East-Bay Whipcrackers" someday!!!! ;)

Warmest regards.

Ben,

Great pictures! You look like a pro :whip:

The springy-ness may be because the whip is brand new and the braiding is still very tight.

And yes, for a "first whip" you started off very well. :TOH:
