Occasionally when I have some spare time I go and read some old posts. A lot of them are annoying since many of the pictures
are no longer accessible. However, I come across the occasional one that doesn't need pictures and really catches my interest.
On this one, I really wanted to add to the thread, but, I decided instead of reviving a three year old thread, I'd start a fresh one.
The particular one I just came across was about signing a whip. Not only to do or not to do, but also how and where.
I sign my whips, but in the a way that it can be seen without taking it apart. About half way through the second bolster, I sign
my name, write the date of signing, and write the number of the whip. Also on one of the pieces of filler leather in the heel knot, I
write the # whip it is in several areas. Aside from that, I just get a
piece of stiff "card" paper, Type in "handmade by..." and the date, then attach to the wrist loop or heel knot with a strand of
leather, depending if it has a wrist loop or not.
I have heard of people doing it in some way on that solid piece of leather at the bottom of the heel knot. If I were to do this
I'd need to do some "professional" looking stamp or something.
Those of you who are whip makers, first, do you sign your whip in any way? and second, where, and how?
Signing your whip.

I do now, but I didn't at first, and I sign it at the bottom of the butt, where the covering knot opens up where a wrist loop would come out of. Seems like the obvious place to me...

You could get some letter stamps of your initials in a font you like and stamp it into the leather that covers the butt (where Franco mentioned).
I've seen whips done like that before and it looks very professional, yet remains subtle.

Dunno if they still offer it, but you could at one time have custom leather stamps made to order at Tandy Leather. I've seen a host of other companies offer custom stamps, too...

Yeah I've seen something like that before. I might when I start to make more and more whips.PyramidBlaster wrote:Dunno if they still offer it, but you could at one time have custom leather stamps made to order at Tandy Leather. I've seen a host of other companies offer custom stamps, too...
Re: Signing your whip.
I never really saw the point in signing my whips.
