Orvis Indy-style jacket: I want it
I know that there have been a number of threads around here about what style jacket Indy really would have worn in the 30s, Indy-style jackets/gear of our own choosing etc. So in that spirit I just wanted to share this jacket http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx ... at_id=8228 that I found today. That is, in my mind, the ultimate Indy-style jacket. From the drape (it looks thick enough to take a beating), to the cargo pockets, buttons, and color. If only the price was a little more 1930s and a little less 2011...

That is a nice jacket, But like you said the price is a little steep.

Nice jacket---Like a Safari/Bush jacket, only leather.
Still, for that price...It oughtta be made from authentic 30's leather...OR 'Lucas-hide'.

Yeah, Orvis makes some (regrettably) nice stuff...I was looking at something similar to this, a 'Correspondent's jacket'---100% cloth, and it was about as much as my G&B Goat Expedition.....!

Magnoli could probably custom make this for you, for a lot cheaper. You can get a freakin' Belstaff jacket for cheaper then that! And those are expensive! This looks very similar to their "Brad" jacket which I think its $1395 USD at Jcrew.com
If you want this jacket, I'd go for Magnoli to build it for you.

Re: Orvis Indy-style jacket: I want it
No worries guys, I'm neither wealthy enough at this point to afford the jacket, nor airheaded enough to drop $1900 on it. Makes you wonder who is though, right? I mean, as far as I know, Orvis seems to be popular stuff - somebody's gotta be buying it. However, I do really like this style.
I think I might just go to Magnoli for a custom jacket based off of these designs once I get a couple of paychecks under my belt. I wonder if he does calfskin? It looks nice, but I wonder if calfskin will even hold up...hmm.
Alexander
I've always loved both the Belstaff in IAL and the M42 jump jacket...all the pieces in my mind coming together. Thanks for connecting the dots _.All of them are based on the Belstaff Trailmaster's of the 1920's. This design even made it's way into the US Army field uniforms of WWII. One of my favorites is the M42 Jump Jacket

Yup, too rich for my wallet, but that's a great looking jacket. Kind of reminiscent of HF's jacket in ESB, in fact. Which I also covet. Best thing off the rack I've found is J. Crew's Utility jacket.

"Great minds..." Indy Original...
I've stumbled upon this same number from Orvis a few times now while on the search for other items and each time I think the same thing "Hmmm... Maaaybe if I won the lottery... a really BIG lottery"
Still... it sure is a pretty thing.

Re: Orvis Indy-style jacket: I want it
I don't much like that Orvis jacekt, I have to say. It looks modern to me and a bit try hard. JMO. Indy's would have had buttons, for one thing.
There are actually many such jackes made by other companies, kind of an M65 Jacket in leather. Magnoli does a Legend in leather too. Probably made by the same leather guys in Pakistan that makes Orvis.

Re: Orvis Indy-style jacket: I want it
I received their fall men's catalog today. This is not the only jacket and or other article of clothing that looks like the National Debt! Orivs has always been expensive, but they are really going over the rapids price wise now! Interesting stuff, but far too rich for me! Heck...I think I would be afraid to wear some of the items they have. So were that so, then what good would it do to buy them in the first place. W>

Re: Orvis Indy-style jacket: I want it
Apparently their target customer is the one where money is no object, so it doesn't MATTER if anything happens to such an expensive piece of clothing. They'll just buy another.
If anyone is in that financial position, GOOD for you!
Otherwise, we're definitely in the wrong catalog area!

Can't say that one appeals to me at any price. From their new catalog, this is the one that I think makes the most sense.

Re: Orvis Indy-style jacket: I want it
I get the Orvis catalog a few times a year. I have ordered a few select things. Their clothing is generally way over priced, especially on their leather wears.
I've been eying this item for some time now, but just can't pull the trigger. Especially when I'm spending my money on A2's.

Re: Orvis Indy-style jacket: I want it
Lol Croft, I thought the same to myself when I first saw the jacket in my original post. I can see the page now "Orvis Pine Explorer Jacket NOW 50% OFF!!"Still up there but maybe one day it'll come down or clearnce.
Which of course, would mean its still 950 freaking dollars. Overall, I still like the look of the jacket, but I think some of the suggestions I've been getting in this thread make much more sense - particularly _'s recomendation of the Legend jacket in leather for less than half the price. Thanks for all the input guys.
Alex
Re: Orvis Indy-style jacket: I want it
They don't generally run sales on a lot of their leather coats, and when they do they are slight discounts. As Michaelson said, they focus on a particular market.

I too have been eyeing the M42 Jump Jacket, are the patches stiff and if yes do they break in over time, I know the day will come that I'll snag one.

I've always like this jacket from WPG. The tanker jacket. I ordered one today. This site has triggered more impulse buys than I care to admit.

A thread on that topic would provide material for a half-dozen doctorates, three or four books, a couple of magazine features, and more divorces than any of us wants to contemplate.Flyderf wrote:This site has triggered more impulse buys than I care to admit.

Superior Flight Apparel makes something very similar called the Minnesota Field Jacket. Probably half that price and custom made. Give Mark a call.

The M42 Jumpjacket is still proudly worn by a lot of the Band of Brothers veterans I know. I own one too and I have to say, they are just fantastic. For that price, it's a bargain!

Re: Orvis Indy-style jacket: I want it
Actually the Belstaff Trialmaster wasn't produced until '47( http://www.belstaff.com/index.php?optio ... Itemid=374" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) , so I'd say the field uniform might have taken design aspects from the Barbour International, which was made in the late thirties._ wrote:

Now the Barbour really has a cool origin.

Speaking of Barbour (via Orvis), check out this beauty:
http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx ... t_id=11296
The prices are steep, but they sure do carry some magnificent looking jackets. I'm a bit suspicious of this one though, they don't even list what type of leather it is...

For those prices you should get the steaks and roasts from the cow they took them off too! No offense to any vegans.

Re: Orvis Indy-style jacket: I want it
I still think that leather jacket from LC was a really good start from which Indy might have started to settle on his own style some years later, and looky looky, Magnoli has it!
As always, just my two cents...

Orvis seriously needs to have multiple view photos of their clothing. If I am going to pay their prices, I want to see the full product.

Agreed. The back is just as important as the front. This goes for any jacket, not just the Indy ones. $800 is a lot of dough for me to take how it looks on faith.

Something just as bad in my eyes - they don't even always list what type of hide it is.
Re: Orvis Indy-style jacket: I want it
Well, in the Orvis Webpage it states it's washed cowhide... But I thought That particular jacket was made out of washed goatskin... Curious... I wonder... Are they the same or the one in the Orvis site is a tad different?IndyOriginal wrote:Something just as bad in my eyes - they don't even always list what type of hide it is.

Not all of their jackets specify the hide type:Well, in the Orvis Webpage it states it's washed cowhide...

Actually, I like this jacket even more than the original Orvis jacket that prompted me to start the thread. But once again, $$ pricey, only one angle shot, and the description doesn't state what hide type it is. I sent them a message asking and they never got back to me.

I like 'The Avengers' Steve Rogers/Captain America jacket.
People elsewhere seem to think it's this one, now going for $406 US, was $580:
