I went to the hatsdirect website this morning to order a Fed IV in tawny fawn, but alas, they don't have it anymore! The have something called "heritage fawn". Is this the same, but with a new name? It definitely looks darker than the tawny fawns I've seen.

Also I noticed that they only have 4 options for colors now. I could have sworn they used to have 5, but I can't for the life of me remember what the other color was. Was it perhaps a lighter brown between the dark brown and tawny?

They have Tawny Fawn, but only in the regular Fed, not the deluxe. To my eyes, they look to be slighty different colors.

Thanks for the reply and the info. I did not know that. And you helped me figure out the missing color I was thinking of. The Fed 4 Regular has 5 colors with "Carbon Grey" being the one I forgot about. The Deluxe only comes in 4 colors.

a little of topic here, but I recently ditched the centre dent on my DB Fed IV for a teardrop bash.

Not strictly 'indy-accurate', but I'm seriously LOVING the look of it now.
I'll try and post some pix later

It might sound odd, but I think the hat 'prefers' that bash too..It just seems to sit right/better....I dunno..

Does that make sense??

Yes! My Fed III had a teardrop shape when I was brave enough (or silly enough) to wear it. It gave the appearance of a lower crown which looked more natural. The hat's proportions were just too big for my head, but that's another story. Yours looks good.

I got caught in the rain yesterday and here's how the hat looked after:

Image

For some reason, the brim got wet the most. The crown had fewer water spatters... it's like the rain was aiming for my front brim the whole time.

Rainy season is from June to August... sometimes reaching mid-September. The rain last Monday was freaky and hard! It wasn't even supposed to be raining that day (according to our weather service), but it did!

Glad to be joining the ranks of the FED once again! Feels like home. My first Indy hat was a Fed., and it didn't quite fit me well, so I gave it to Fenris (see my avatar) and bought this one from another member, whom I owe many thanks. :TOH: I've been blessed to receive such high quality hats, and glad to include this one among them. This Fed may occompany me to my next adventure.

This pic doesn't do it justice, but the next one is a bit better, in terms of displaying the overall shape of the hat. ;)

From that angle, the hat looks really tall... as in Downtown-ish tall. Funny how a camera lens can play tricks on the eyes... or it's probably just me as it's almost midnight here and my eyes are drying out (contacts).

Also, I can now see how much the front of my hat had tapered compared to your avatar pic. On your avatar pic, it's much straighter. But I still prefer this kind of taper as compared to side taper... with the taper in front, you don't have to deal with being called a cone-head.

It looks tall, but it is about 4 1/2". Difficult to get that just right photo by snapping one into the mirror, especially due to the angle-below the face, etc. But you know, the best kind of taper, if it is there, is because you used it, and that's the main thing. ;)

Oh, the pic with you wearing it doesn't look tall at all. It's the other pic that makes it look big.

Also, I have tried that technique of taking my picture in the mirror and I always fail... either it's blurred, or part of me is cut off or the angle is wrong - making the hat look super tapered.

here's my Fed4-D after 3 years through lots of wear, traveling, heavy weather, being crushed in a backpack and in a luggage compartment on a plane (the last one i seriously was about to beat up a guy for throwing his suitcase on my hat without asking me politely to remove it. You should have seen his face when i got up from my seat. hehe!)

still looks the same as when i got it. the sweatband is a little bent because of the wire but not badly enough to make it uncomfortable to wear. man do i love this hat :TOH:

My Fed IV. Not the best view of the hat, I admit.

This is in San Francisco. My sister was having a post-wedding photo shoot (hence the fancy duds) and my son spotted a cave that we'd never noticed before, so we explored. We talked my father into checking it out as well and he caught me checking up on him.

Looks really good. Great for a first bash. Just my own preference, I like to push the
crown down a tad lower in the front. But that's just me and that's how a hat looks
better on me.

How you got it to pinch so tightly on the first bash is pretty good, sir.

I never really considered taking the wire out. Does it make the hat feel any different on your head? What's the best way to remove it?

You can always remove the wire. I did that when I got the same hat. Just clip it with a pair of small side cutters at the back of the sweatband by the bow. Then, pull out the wire with pliers.

I believe Michaelson is a great fan of this approach.

I always thought that the Feds just weren't made to be a Raiders fedora, then I saw yours!

Gooch, Michaelson, and anyone else with the knowledge and experience, feel free to jump in:

I've been thinking about doing this. What does it do to the hat looks, feel, and durability-wise? I am thinking it allow the hat to more closely conform to the head. Will the hat also have a more relaxed look about it? Why is the wire there to begin with? To help the hat keep its new looking shape longer? I like my hats to look lived in. Will removing the wire help in this regard, as well? Will the hat turn into a mushball in way to short a time?

I believe, and hatters correct me if I'm wrong, but the "Reed" is used to maintain shape and assists in flanging out the sweatbands (moving the sweatbands seam away from your head for comfort). The fed 4, while an awesome hat, has a poorly flanged (if at all) sweatband, so no harm there. And as an adventuring lid who cares how much shape it keeps IMHO? Ever seen the SOC? ;) When I did have one, I pulled it. Made it more comfortable to me.

Akubra still use a wire in their reed tape. Most have moved over to a plastic. It's a much improved replacement because if you get a kink in the wire its done. You will need to replace it. The plastic ones don't kink up very easy and they can be moved back into shape, much better in my opinion.

The plastic in the reed tape has a purpose and should be removed. the plastic is to keep the sweatband belled into the hat.. remove it and no more bell. Just a friendly FYI.
