US Wings US Made Legend in Steer Hide (w/photo)

Post by wild_weasel »

My US WINGS jacket came today! I thought long and hard over what to get. The imported is sized more ‘generously’ while the US made is ‘slimmer’, ‘LONG’ (US only) is 1” longer in the sleeve and 2” longer in the back. Steer hide is more durable while lamb is lighter and cooler. My measurements are 6’1”, 205#, 43” chest, 42” waist, 33” sleeve, and 15.5” neck. I finally decided on the US Made Legend in Steer Hide XL LONG.

@ Michaelson,

What do you think of the length? I think I can go either way of whether or not to wear a LONG. I don't like wearing synthetic materials when flying here. This jacket is intended to be extra skin under my body armor.

Looks 'Temple of Doom'/CS' length to me.

It will also ride up some after you've worn it sitting down, so I think it looks pretty darn good!

By the way, and not as an 'afterthought', thank YOU for your service! We definitely appreciate you and everyone out there taking care of us. :TOH:

Great looking jacket, and it almost looks like a second-skin fit already!

I'd also like to echo Michaelson and say that we over here are thankful to your service for all of us. :TOH:

Best wishes,

I'd say you picked a winner! If it looks that good fresh out of the box it'll only get better with a little use.

BTW if you ever get any R&R in Qatar drop me a line, I'd be happy to show you around.

I bought what I thought was a US Wings Legend in steerhide a little while back second hand. Although when I got it it looked more like goat. Anyone have any idea what leather it is? BTW- I am selling it in the bazaar.

Hard to say from pics, but it looks like steer/cow as the second photo resembles my cow Hero.

It definitely looks like a Legend, due to the collar, pocket placement and config., pocket flaps, etc. Due to the grain, it looks alot like cow. Leather looks thin, especially around the lower portion of the jacket & handwarmer entry, leading me to believe it is a Legend in antique cow, but the color is off for that type of hide. Could be the lighting that the photos were taken in? Need to see the yoke, but if the yoke is small, and seams misaligned, it is a Legend.

Goat tends to be shiny and has somewhat of a plasticy feel. If I'm not mistaken they never made a goatskin jacket in the new, Hero and Legend patterns they have been using.

True, CM...BUT, the differences between goatskin and cowhide are pretty obvious...especially a distressed cowhide.

Lord. Nobody said definitively cow. Looks like cow. Still looks like cow to me in the 2nd pic. Mine is identical in grain and color. The first pic throws a curve due to the darkness and somewhat shinier appearance.
Maybe it's German Shephard.

And there's the fact that jnic's is, apparently, not one of the US made jackets....different batches of cowhide, most likely.

I'm sorry I'm trying your patience.

Looks like my Wested goat hide to me which is why I maintain you can't tell from a photo. I'll stop now because I'm obviously boring you.

Tell you what, post 3 close-up photos of leather samples as Nick posted in his second photo above. Nothing fancy, leather with the top grain, no tricks, etc. Post one of lamb, one goat and one cow, and put me to the test with three of the most common jacket leathers. I will say this, the grain of horsehide and cowhide can look very similiar, sometimes, as can cow and goat. The grain of lamb and goat can look very similiar, sometimes. Just depends on where the hide is obtained from the animal, but that is why it is not easy. ;)

Great looking jacket. I have a US Wings CE and it appears very similar to it.

What part of Afghanistan are you in? I'm currently at Camp Eggers in Kabul.

Take care! :TOH:

Thanks guys. I would say that the first photo I posted is a good representation of what the jacket actually looks like. It most definitely could be cow, as it does feel and look a lot like an old Wested cow I used to have.

Roger that. If you're ever down this way shoot me a PM. I don't get up to Bagram that often.

You take care and enjoy that jacket!

The jacket fits great and is not bulky under my body armor. I think it will work out great while FOB hopping via mil air. I'll stay in touch.

From my experience, the US made steer is very much like the CE jacket. Same type of leather, just a more updated pattern.

If someone has a US made Legend in steer/cowhide, could you please post measurements on the XL? I have a L at the moment, and it seems a little small, so I may do an exchange. I need the sleeve length, back length and measurement across the pits, please? Also, across the yoke from seam to seam at its widest point would be much appreciated. This L measures 24 across the pits, 20 across the yoke, back length is 25 1/2, and around 25~25 1/2" sleeves. It is a little tight in the chest and shoulders.
