Re: My NEW Gibson & Barnes Goat and the Dave Marshall Experi
Tundra, magnificent jacket! Nice drape, great color and it looks like it fits like a glove...hope you enjoy it for many years to come. I'm a huge LC jacket fan, don't really care for the Raiders fit on me and your write-up had even ME considering a Expedition for a minute there! Thanks for sharing, glad it was a memorable experience for you.
Re: My NEW Gibson & Barnes Goat and the Dave Marshall Experi
The placement of the zipper is SR but is the hardware itself correct? Nickel or brass?
I have a TODDS for the fairer weather, but I am looking for an option for the cold-cold weather. GB or Magnoli are my choices.
Do we have a choice of zipper?
The goat looks awesome.

Re: My NEW Gibson & Barnes Goat and the Dave Marshall Experi
Michael..
I happen to think you're spot on about the SA over SR thing... Screen accuracy is always rather too nebulous to pin down well enough for anything more than one scene at a time... But like yourself, I've taken to aiming at the "rough" idea of the scene/film since that is (in my mind at least) truer to the ethos of Indiana Jones... You said it to me a while back, and I've taken the idea on board.. It needs to be comfortable, practical, and something you can see Indy wearing, but not EXACTLY what he had! (Not always in that order.. The "super whip holder" from Wade is a good example)...
That jacket covers all bases so well I'm highly impressed.. Lovely stuff to see.. And I'd honestly agree with the zipper thing too.. Nickel is cool, but honestly I think I prefer the heavier brass versions since they feel more sturdy (which makes them more practical too).. It's all personal preference of course, but I think that your mindset on this is a very logical approach to being a gearhead... Something I'm aiming for myself now.
Great stuff.. And Zoolander.. Quality... I've recently been pulled into watching "America's Top Model" and never knew it, but Zoolander actually ISN'T a comedy! I now view it as a highly accurate "Docu-drama", which SERIOUSLY scares me... These people are crazy! Funny to watch though... You can almost hear the single thoughts reverberate around their heads until it hits the "mouth hole" and they express it.. Lovely stuff...
All the best, and thanks for showing the jacket.. Great stuff!

How can you NOT like Zoolander!? Do they still make people without senses of humour like that? Worrying..
And yeah, I've been working on my next up and coming model pose for the Indygear heads out there... "Worn-Distressed Leather"... It'll blow ya'll minds... Keep watching!

Re: My NEW Expedition in Goat and the Dave Marshall Experien
Beautiful jacket, great pics, and I'm envious of your Dave Marshall experience because a month prior to yours, I had been allotted 15 minutes in the store by my" tour guide." I would not have even had time to meet with Dave if he was there.
I vowed next time...I'm gonna ask and see if he's in because if I travel 2000 miles and go visit the store then I'm going to ensure I have the time. He might even sell me a new one!
Again, great story!

You are right on the money! I had to do lot of negotiating just to get that far!Tundrarider wrote:Thank you for your kind words, Joe!
By your "tour guide" I take it you mean perhaps another family member who may have been less than enthusiastic about waiting around outside for you?
I most certainly will drop you a line! I always welcome the opportunity to meet new people--especially if they enjoy our hobby and do not rush me through trying on G & B jackets!Tundrarider wrote:Definitely ask for Dave next time. Though he has been put through the wringer over the years by a few overzealous fans, he remains friendly and hospitable, nonetheless. He has been kind enough to bring me back there on several occasions, once just to approve the skins they had selected for my jacket!
Joe, I see you've been around for many years and though I've only been here for a couple, I can't say I recall seeing you around enough to know you. Hope to see more of you around the board, especially if you want to talk Expeditions!
Also, if you do take another trip this way, please drop me a note so we can meet up! Perhaps we can take Dave out to lunch! (After you order your new Expedition, of course! )
Thanks again!

Well, thank you Dawg! I like what's been done to the place! The site looks so different and there are a lot more gear offerings.
I never thought I'd make it to California but last September I took a few days and I went out to see my oldest graduate from boot camp at MCRD and just had to try to make it over to G&B.

You too? My wife has finally gotten adjusted to the fact that if we are anywhere near a store that sells leather -- I have to go in and get my quick fix! Cannot get enough of that wonderful aroma! W>_ wrote:How'd I miss this one?
Dave's a dear old friend. I need to get to El Cajon - just the smell of the place is intoxicating. Used to be a storage unit where they kept skids of the Pakistani veg goat that had just come in. Like drawing on a hooka pipe...
Nice jacket bud...

Joe, my friend...it's been a long time since Athens! With any luck, I'll be back there soon!
You still got your distressed cowhide G&B Expo from way back when? I'll bet it's looking amazing!
Give me a shout via PM and let's catch up!
First round's on me!

I tell you what, Tundy...this G&B goat makes me so gosh darn happy I just want to pseudo-cuss awhile! I hit it with some of that lexol, and it is now buttery soft like lamb. Just Indy-credible gear for the serious adventurer! ;
Re: My NEW Expedition in Goat and the Dave Marshall Experien
I've done a few searches but haven't seen any photos of a G&B expedition in lamb - anyone got one ?

I believe there is a whole thread dedicated to those...I know mine was in there!
Re: My NEW Expedition in Goat and the Dave Marshall Experien
I understand Dave has left G&B. How will this affect their product?

I think the most extensive thread of all Expeditions is this one:Gorak wrote:I believe there is a whole thread dedicated to those...I know mine was in there!

Gorak has links to photos of his Expedition in lamb on the first page, and Texan Scott and ProfessorHenryWJonesJr have photos of Expeditions in lamb on page 2.
Best wishes,

Re: My NEW Expedition in Goat and the Dave Marshall Experien
Thanks for that, I did see that thread but missed that particular jacket I think. If that's the lamb then I'm really liking it - it is after some years/distressing though. Am in contact with G&B at the mo, custom seems easy enough but communication is slow as to sizing. I'm sure I'll get there !

They grow up so fast...
Love to see some updated pics. Any naturficial wear marks or grain development of note?

Kudos to Michael for helping out noobs like myself with this thread. His reviews and tutorials are COW gold.
While Dave Marshall no longer works for G&B, I was still able to request an Expo in the grainiest goatskin available just a year ago. It looks just like Michael's, and was well worth the extra wait. The heavy grain lends instant character to the jacket even before break-in.

Re: My NEW Expedition in Goat and the Dave Marshall Experien
'ol Tundy...
I just had my G&B reworked. My 44R was more like an XL, with 27" pits, and since I lost some weight, I needed to get it taken up some. Found a leather goods alterations shop in Austin, so it's on its way back. Can't wait to see what they did.
As you may know, a G&B retails for $500 or more, but for whatever reasons, does not trade as such on the used/secondary markets. If you are able to find one your size, considering the quality craftsmanship & construction, it represents about the best deal in an Indy jacket that you can find anywhere. Faced with the possibility of selling mine, and considering the prices these sell for, I opted to get mine altered.

I just bought a 46T on EBay. I am just hoping it fits. The Wested 48 jackets fit fine I have. Hard thing is my chest is around 44 but I have big shoulders and am pretty tall.

Re: My NEW Expedition in Goat and the Dave Marshall Experien
My experience with Expos is that they're true to your suit coat/blazer size and length.
I initially bought one size larger, like in military jackets. Big mistake if you want the Expo to have the proper Raiders fit.

Well - 48 sport coats are slightly too big and have to have them tailored. 46 ones are slightly too short. Hoping the 46T in the G&B fits.Cajunkraut wrote:My experience with Expos is that they're true to your suit coat/blazer size and length.

Re: My NEW Expedition in Goat and the Dave Marshall Experien
My experience is that as time has passed, the G&B's are cut more as a relaxed fit. In order to get 24" at the pits, you would have to order a 40R. Doesn't fit with other OTR sizing schemes. Usually a Large, ie 42-44 is 24" pits.

Tundy, you renamed this thread "."
Try not to be too over-the-top would you?
Anyway, I just received my G&B goat back from a major operation...er...alterations, and they did an outstanding job. Had the torso and sleeves taken in, and it virtually looks like nothing was done to it except that the fit is better. It's been sleeting, raining and icy here, so it really came in handy today.

That's $474. These sold for $500 for many years, but this is the cheapest I've seen it in some time, brand new from the maker, unless you go second hand, then you get quite the steal.

The G&B or possibly a vintage Wested RoLA will always be my sentimental favorite.
