GOOD LORD! That is an awesome jacket! Congrats on owning that one. And good to see you back around here... spring does tend to be a busy time for us teachers don't it.

No kidding....and I've STILL not heard anything about that OTHER issue you and I (and TS) were discussing....got frustrated, myself, and work just piled up...and then...well, YOU know!
Oh...and thanks....it's the ONE jacket that, if I had to pick just ONE to keep, would be the one I'd hold on to and take into battle....any day!
Cheers, my friend!

Re: Show us your Expeditions! / Any Distressed Expeditions?
Indydawg - that's a great looking hunk of goat. My Wested goat aged like that, with nice faded patches on the elbows. Veg tanned looks very pretty.

That is an awesome looking jacket!!! That's a great shade of brown. How long have you had it? I hope mine ages that well as a chrome-tanned goatskin. Thank you for sharing (now that the semester is over)!

Re: Show us your Expeditions! / Any Distressed Expeditions?
I owned that jacket a couple times in trades with Dawg in years past. I threatened him with absolute indescriable pain if he ever let that jacket get out of his hands again (it was too small on me anyway ).
Fortunately, I now own one just like it that fits, and I am a happy camper!
So, yes....yes it does.
Regards! Michaelson

Re: Show us your Expeditions! / Any Distressed Expeditions?
Thanks, guys! M is right...the pictures most definitely do the jacket all due justice. It's as soft, supple, and distressed as it looks....and all natural.
Yeah, this jacket's had quite a history. It was Mike's originally...then mine...then Michaelson's....then mine again....then MIKE'S again....then Michaelson's....and finally found her way back to me...last summer, I think.
So....I think a lot of the distressing was done thanks to the USPS
And yes...M DID mention something about "indescribable pain" if I should ever let it out of my sight again...
It's a fantastic jacket, in all honesty. If the veg-tanned is available, I'd go with that over the chrome any day...
Regards!

No jacket maker has total control over their leather supply. A batch of leather can be processed the same way each time to the letter, and they just will not be uniformly the same as the last batch. Every jacket is unique for that reason. And every purchase is also a gamble in that regards as well.

Ok, I have been around here a little while and I have always wondered about the pocket flaps on the Expo. I see some that have really nice scalloping and some look very straight like seni-old Wings flaps. I know they have different flap dies. do they use different ones sometimes? or am I getting played the in-famous (cue 3 amigos) camera angles? What gives? I do get excited every time i think about getting one someday...

I wonder if anyone could take a comparison pic of an Expo and a USW Legend pocket flaps?

Since they make only one Expedition, I can't imagine that they would change up the dies from jacket to jacket. I'd say that your camera angle explanation makes more sense.
Here's a close-up of a flap on my Expedition:
There's a couple of flap shots with the jackets being worn in my Expedition thread. (whipcracker, I know you saw the thread already, but here it is, if you want to see the flaps again. ) The first pic is of my jacket and the second pic of the jacket I tried on in the shop:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=50900&start=0
One thing I really like about the Expedition is the pockets aren't as large overall as some of the jackets out there. So, though you might get more scalloped flaps with a different jacket, you're also going to get a lot of other differences, so you have to weigh which differences carry more weight with you.

Thanks Tundra for posting that pic. I agree you gotta give and take with jackets. Your jacket is also one of the historic COW Expos. I looks awesome! I really wish they would have just used one for CS. It just would have been cool.

Re: Show us your Expeditions! / Any Distressed Expeditions?
Are there any photos of the prototype deerskin Expeditions out there?
Michaelson?
Indydawg?
_?
Rundquist?
Indiana Joe?
These are the names I found on searches of people who at one time or another have owned a deerskin Expedition.
I understand from browsing previous posts these jackets as prototypes are different than the Expedition pattern now. However, it would be great to see that leather, and also see a little more of the history of the Expedition. Post 'em if you've got 'em!
Best wishes,
Nebraska Schulte

It would be interesting to view the protos. I remember M saying that the deerskin's sleeves would get longer with wear, etc.

Actually, it sounded like they kept getting shorter (at least when warm), according to what just said over here:Texan Scott wrote:It would be interesting to view the protos. I remember M saying that the deerskin's sleeves would get longer with wear, etc.

No, Tex remembers correctly.
What I said in your link, Luke, was:

What I said in your link, Luke, was:
I never said WHICH way they lost their length.I loved the jacket, but the sleeves never COULD keep their length after getting warm. Once I took the jacket off, they returned to regular length.

Re: Show us your Expeditions! / Any Distressed Expeditions?
I can't speak aabout Indydawg photos although I know we took some (aand vids) when we got together those few times. As for me, I will have to snap some pics of my naturally distressed cowhide that I purchased in 2003. As much as I loved it, I had sold my goatskin because I didn't feel it would distress fast enough.
And btw, I've never had an issue with Flightsuits/Gibson & Barnes sizing...my sportcoat size has always been what I wore in a standard, off-the-rack Expo jacket, whether it was my lamb, goat, cowhide, or even that deerskin.

I have the chrome-tanned, and didn't know enough when I bought mine to ask if a veg-tanned hide was available. The chrome tanned will never "patina" like the veg tanned. I have hide samples, and the vat dyed hides has it's color permeated all the way through. I love my Expo, but it will never look as good as Indydawg's.

Yes Nebraska I do indeed have two. Well, not for long that is. The other I have is just in beautiful condition. I have babied it to death. The reason being is I've hardly worn it especially recently. I have just sold it as a matter of fact. I am however keeping the beat to death one. I think I may send it off to G&B and have the needed repairs made. I was thinking the other night about having a different lining put in. I had the idea of having them install a cotton russet lining like those found in their A-2's. Would be something a little different.

Re: Show us your Expeditions! / Any Distressed Expeditions?
Well, both this thread and Michael's "Dave Marshall Experience" thread has convinced me...I'm placing an order for the Expedition in the next couple days, can't wait! I love my TNO Last Crusade in cow but really want a lighter option (while maintaining the hide toughness) in the Raiders style. Went back and forth between the Expedition, a Wested Hero and the Wings Legend options, but in the end, I think that the G&B route is the one for me.
Spoke with a G&B sales rep, they said 3 weeks for my size. Can't wait to get it and try some of Michael's distressing techniques to break it in a bit, get it ready for the Michigan winter!
Thanks for all the info guys, it's much appreciated.

Bogie - that looks exactly like my Expedition, and it has not been babied. I think about the best you can expect after years of neglect is perhaps a little fading, no more.
I notice the tag says "Made To Measure". Did you order it to measure? What was that process like? How versatile were they?

Re: Show us your Expeditions! / Any Distressed Expeditions?
Would anybody happen to know the sleeve length, and the body length of the size 40r and 38r jackets? I'm considering the Expedition, but I'm not entirely certain, as I'm also considering a different, shearling jacket.
I'm reading this thread, and I've heard that the sleeve length is on the short side, is that right?

I would suggest contacting Dave Marshall at Gibson & Barnes to see if he could give you that information:

He's been working with Indygear for a long time and is a great guy.
Best wishes,
