Bag Strap Buckles Updated!
Other shots of the buckle from Raiders
I've received another sample today that is identical to my original buckle I bought from the leather shop in Portland.
I included a side by side with comparison to the keppler buckle
(I also threw in the Siegel for the fun of it.)
You can see from the Raiders comparison pic that these buckles match
more then a few the scenes. As both Sergei stated and I agreed, there were obviously a few different buckles used over the course of the film.
At this point, unless something else comes along, I'm offering this new buckle as an option if people want.
I'm waiting to hear back on the final price, but from the wholesale list I have, plan on about $1.00 each which will include shipping.
(I'm not sure if I will be able to buy them wholesale.)
This is who I have originally listed and amounts:

Well I suppose if you're Superman, it would definitely be an advantage!Michaelson wrote:Shows you how cold my drive in today was....my frozen brain kept wondering 'why would ANYBODY want a buckle made out of 'solid lead'!? Sheesh! Regards. Michaelson
BTW People, in your PMs let me know which you prefer.
My thought is that I'm going to get the ones from Seigel.

Re: Solid lead on Bag Strap Buckles!
Well I have looked at a lot of screen shots. It does seem to vary. What I meant by the Siegel buckle is that the frame was on the thick side. It should resemble the Keppler frame thiness. There are contradictory scenes where the buckle is not as thick as what is posted here.Dalexs wrote:I .. Sergei originally though it was too big.
I disagree based on the screen shot.
...
I just got out the tape measure and measured the Keppler buckle. On the inside dimension:
- 1" x 1 1/8"
Outside dimension:
- 1 5/16" x 1 7/16"
The buckle's inside dimension has to be big enough to accomodate the 1" leather strap.
Hope this helps...

These are listed as 1" buckles so they should accomodate a 1" strap.
If they don't I'll just send them back.
In terms of the contradictory scenes, I watched a number of scenes that showed the buckle looking like the above image.
All throughout Cairo, you get glimpses of the buckle and it definitely looks like that. The scene above is from the flying wing fight sequence when they are under the plane.
I'm not trying to diss on Lee's product. God knows he's done wonders for all of us. And I don't doubt that there are inconsistencies, as there are with pretty much all of the gear, but close up pictures don't lie.
Now, does one like the way it is going to look on their bag? Who knows, thats going to be a personal preference.
All I know, is enough people contacted me to make it worth buying a bag of 100.
So I'll let you all know when it comes in.

A Minor Update
Just got off the phone with Siegals of Calif. They are going to send me a catalog and a sample (going in the mail today). That way, before I commit a chunck of change, I can see what it looks like on a strap.
The price may be closer to 1.20 each +shipping, because I can't buy wholesale. I'm working that out. A price break comes at 125 pieces.
I will probably not get that many.
You will see that I've updated the above image.
The Goldbergs (or shoeeyelets.com) buckle is a no. They don't stock the one I originally showed that was similar to kepplers. I would need a minimum order of 2000 to get it made.
They do stock the one shown. Yes, it says Hush Puppy on it. The fit is alittle tight and I don't like the overall look of it.
So stop calling Francis, because that's the one you're going to get as a sample.
I should have an update mid next week.

All this talk of a perfect buckle has me seeing them in my sleep. Anyway, I was watching LC last night and noticed that the buckle gets pretty beat up while Indy's hanging from the tank. Maybe if we just bend and beat the heck out of all our gear, we can finally get it perfect
(sorry it's so grainy, I just took a picture of the TV)
(sorry it's so grainy, I just took a picture of the TV)
Just curious if there was any updates concering the buckle?
Also, I was wondering if the buckles you are getting have the small indention that the belt hole bar sits in that keeps it from sliding around when it is attached...(For lack of better words!)...
You can see the indention in the HushPuppy/Goldbergs buckle, but the Keppler and Noel Howard buckle are smooth all the way around...
Thanks!

I spoke with them the middle of last week and they were sending me out a catalog and a sample of the buckle. I decided to get the sample before I dropped to much cash on something that might not be right.
I am still waiting the sample to come in. If I don't get by theend ofthis week, I will probably just go ahead and order the minimum amount and hope for the best.
And as Bill said, they do not have the indent for the tongue.
I let you guys know as soon as I do.

I also got 2 samples from Goldberg this week with the HushPuppy stamped on it with the indention. I set about grinding it down and got it all smoothed out but.... then I noticed it's a shade small... about 7/8" wide x 3/4" .... so it's just a squeeze below 1"
I'd be interested in buying a Siegel's buckle when you get them if you are going to order them.... hope they are the right one.
Keep on cracking a smile.

I'm interested too. By the way, where is the store in CA? I might be able to go in if it's in LA.
On a side note, I was looking thru my reference to bash a new hat and found a few pics from Raiders where his buckle is bent in a "V" shape. Could be due to filming or they might have had different buckles on the various bags used.

Spiegel? I couldn't help but hopping on that one. I know what you meant though.Dalexs wrote: BTW People, in your PMs let me know which you prefer.
My thought is that I'm going to get the ones from Spiegel.
Finding this buckle has been like seeking the Lost Grail. Even Keppler's doesn't look "perfect". Choose wisely. It appears the Siegel's is the perfect one. I hope that it is not stamped. That darn Goldberg one would've been right if it didn't have Hushpuppy and the tongue indention stamped and if it would've been a hair larger. They are misrepresenting the ad since it is not truly a 1" buckle.
The pictures of the one Indy was wearing that was bent represents the Conway style of buckle. From the side you can see it's bent in the middle. Seeing it front on in other pics it doesn't appear to have that curve. I ordered a Conway 1" buckle and don't like it. So, looking forward to the Siegel if it's good.

After sleeping on the thought, it just looks too big, which is a shame because I thought this was the one. One thought I did have was on the 7/8 in. buckle that was discussed before. I found that if you carefully hammer a buckle, you can actually shrink the length, while increasing the width. I tried this on a buckle that was much too long and it ended up being the right length, but almost a quarter inch too wide, then I accidentally broke it in half Anyway, just a thought.

Two things to say, based on some feedback and looking at the buckle all weekend, I've decided NOT to go with the buckle from Siegels.
I just don't think it is right. It's close, but just not right.
That one above from Heritan is interesting if it is a solid cast buckle and not stamped. Anyone want to contact them and get a sample or buy a couple?
Sorry this didn't work out, but I'm sure we'll find it someday.
Let the quest continue!

Check out the buckles at http://www.tandyleather.com/products.as ... genumber=2. The 69 cent buckle looks decent.

Guys,
I'm talking to a guy in the UK, who has many years of replica work experience, and is a leather craftsman. He seems pretty sure he can match the buckle from a UK source, especially as the original was English.
The www.bucklesexpress.com UK source I posted in an earlier thread didn't work out. Thin pressed buckles I'm afraid....
More details to follow, keep fingers crossed.

The problem with that style of buckle is the roller along the top rail.Starman Jones wrote:Check out the buckles at http://www.tandyleather.com/products.as ... genumber=2. \
The 69 cent buckle looks decent.
It would have to come off and then you would find that it is set
over/in an indent along that top rail. Some of those styles you can't even remove the roller.
That would be great if you could come up with something.Indiana_Dudley wrote:I'm talking to a guy in the UK, who has many years of replica work experience, and is a leather craftsman. He seems pretty sure he can match the buckle from a UK source, especially as the original was English.
I did see a couple over at http://www.abbeysaddlery.co.uk/
(but the site doesn't always work well, hence no pictures.)
If you could find something in a 1" size that looks like the above
Garrison we'd be in good shape.
Good luck.

I like the middle one, as long as it's not a stamped and the roller is in fact not riding on an indent.
The bottom has the right shape, but like the Aplus buckles, it looks stamped, so not very sturdy, and won't fit all straps (thickness).
I have found a few sources here that supply ones like in the top picture but without the roller. Which would be basically the same as Kepplers buckle.
As soon as I see the samples, I'll post it.

FYI
I do still have the guy in the UK looking hard. According to his last mail he should soon have a collection of 1" buckles from a selection of UK trade suppliers. These will be based on photos from this forum and screenshots.
I don't have a date on when these will arrive, and I don't want to hassle him. But I will post as soon as possible.

OK, heres something promising -
This buckle that I posted before has it all:
-Nickle
-1"x 1"
-rounded edges
-no divit for the center post
Ive been emailing back and forth, and have finally gotten them to send me a couple without spending $10 on shipping - Ill update here, or start a new post when they arrive.

I have what could be the first buckle that comes close from the UK source. I am inquiring if this same buckle comes in nickle, but your thoughts so far please....
