Caught short I got ...a custom Dorfman??? From Todd's???
ok, I know what you guys are gonna say about getting a Dorfman , so here's the context:
I'm in the California, I'm heading to an interview for something and one day before I'm due in LA I'm told by the potential employer that I need a hat. An adventurer hat. And here's me having left my Fed IV back in the UK. Stupid! So I stop by Todd's costumes in Pine Mountain and figure I'll try out his Uptowners and Downtowners, as I love how they looked on the web.
So We try a few on and it's clear that they simply don't suit my face shape. They just look too tall on me. So I ask Todd what the other hats are and he says they're dorfman pacifics, but they're rabbit felt, not wool felt. Then, being the awesome vendor that he is he offers to shape on to my liking if I like the fit.
So I try one on and the height of the hat is perfect. So Todd shapes it for me there and then...and I have to say I was really pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it.
I really put it through the wringer too. It survived a three day assualt in the wilds, being bashed, crushed and dirtied and came out looking..well, see for yourselves. I have to say, I wouldn't have been the first person to recommend a DP hat, but really I think Todd did a fine number on this, and it's kudos to him, as I wasn't keen on the shape it started as at all!

The hat does suit you. What was the job you went to Cali for?

That's the best looking DPC I've ever seen.
It looks good on you, too.

Thanks guys!
And, not being intentionally mysterious here, but as soon as I'm allowed to talk about the job I went for, I will.
Cheers!

I'm glad you're happy with your DP, Fox! I'm also glad you realize the importance of a hat shape that complements you. I've seen some DPs that look better on some than truly SA hats. And while this hat may serve a purpose for the short haul, at least it gives you an idea of the specs to look for in a higher quality, but similar shaped fedora at some point. I hope it serves you well!

Thanks all! Glad you like the hat. It's gone from the hard 'cardy' feel that you get at first to lovely and soft too. Bonus! Next time I'm in Cali I may have to pop in to get my Akubra reshaped too

So...finally! to those that were curious about what job it was I was going for, check out the 'Legend Quest' thread at Lao Che's Table...
No, I didn't get it (I'm not that Scottish guy, though I tested alongside him) ...and I'm a little relieved, now that I've seen the feedback on here!

Re: Caught short I got ...a custom Dorfman??? From Todd's???
I bought one of those DP hats from Miller. It was my first felt fedora. I actually think it's a pretty decent hat. Mine is still wearing the teardrop bash that it came in. Unfortunately, I bought it one size too small, and it hasn't responded well to stretching. But I have a number of nice Akubras and a few Beaver Brands now that have taken it's place.
