New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
So, I've had two Westeds. One was a custom order I picked up off Cairo Bazaar. Pockets were at just the right height, and the main body was perfect, but the sleeves were too short, and I didn't like the way the storm flap was. Then I got a custom Wested, sleeves were right, and I liked the storm flap, but the main body was too short, and it was a bit tight in the chest. And then the leather tore at the sleeve. Not the seam, not the stitching, the leather. So now I'm looking for a replacement. What ever I get will need to be custom, due to my long arms. I prefer the LC style, so the question is, do I buy another Wested and hope that it has a better fit, go for a Wings, buy a Magnoli, or trust Todd to produce what I want? You guys are the experts, what do you think?

Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
IMO research all you can here I hate to say it but use the search button. Many threads talking about the LC Jacket. I think there's even a LC jacket thread.
What I might say is the perfect LC jacket (Tony Nowak) someone else will slam it down saying another jacket maker is better trust me.
Wested does make a good LC, Magnoli does one equally as good. Todd only has the Raiders pattern? I'm guessing on that one.
Good luck sorry I'm not much help. Here is my Tony Nowak LC.

New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
If you have the money to get a Magnoli then that's what I'd recommend.
I don't believe Wings does a custom jacket so you couldn't go that route with them, although they do nice jackets.
Otherwise there's always a custom Wested, which would be cheaper than a Magnoli, but although they can turn out a great jacket I believe it's sometimes hit-and-miss with them.

Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
At present, there are three LC jacket makers: Wested, Magnoli and TNO. If you go Wested, you have many choices of skins and the overall price will be just over $300. If you order one from Magnoli, they will honor the laundry list of specs. and the most cost effective option is goatskin, with the final price at around $500, and $100 more for lamb. If you decide to go TNO, I'd recommend the dark crystal skull leather, and the final price on that jacket will be around $900, at last count.
Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
Todd said he could make a LC style jacket as a custom order. I'd prefer to go with the Wested, however the sizing seems inconsistant. As I said before, my old one was much roomier in the chest despite being marked as the same size as my newer custom jacket (which is what caused the rip). Has anyone else experienced a similar experience in which the cut seemed quite different between jackets?

Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
For a Last Crusade "reminiscent" jacket, I've enjoyed the leather, look, feel, and drape of the U.S. Wings Hero jacket in antique cowhide:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=47398&start=650
There aren't many sizes left of it in cowhide, but the lamb version of the same pattern has more sizes. Plus there is the Collector's edition, which also has a similar vibe.
But if you've been having problems with getting a good fit, then IMHO I'd recommend Magnoli's jacket. It really seems to be the best value for a tailored LC jacket. Holt has a great example of one of Magnoli's Last Crusade jackets over here:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=47353&hilit=magnoli+last+crusade
Good luck with your search, and please post photos of whatever you decide to get!
Best wishes,
NS

Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
After seeing Holts jacket in that thread above, I'd FOR SURE go with a Magnoli! That thing is GORGEOUS!!!
Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
Well, after thinking on it most of the day, I'm between the custom Wested and the Wings Collectors Edition Signature Series™ Indy-style Vintage Adventurer Jacket http://www.uswings.com/sigseries2.asp. A much as I would like a Magnoli, its a bit rich for my blood.
Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
well, if your going US wings' way I would definitely get the HERO. way different pattern then the adventurer. very close to LC.

Unfortunately, it appears they do not have my size available in the Hero.
Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
I've pretty much decided to go with a Wested. I'll specify the dimensions from Arm pit to arm pit. Going to request 7" x 6.5 " pockets as well, see how that works out. What hide would you suggest, Novapelle or Authentic Lamb?
Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
Remember it's not just the pocket size it's also the flap - which is a much broader flap than any other - comes almost half way down the cargo pocket.Ronski wrote:I've pretty much decided to go with a Wested. Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
For colouring, I'd suggest the Pre-Distressed cowhide for LC....That or Novapelle...Either would suit the LC jackets styling...(I prefer the Pre-Dis because my jacket is lovely, but your mileage may vary on that..)

Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
Depends on preference. Authentic lamb is different from novapelle. Novapelle is cowhide. 2 choices there. Pre-distressed is slightly different from nova. Take a look at this thread to get a better idea:Ronski wrote:I've pretty much decided to go with a Wested. I'll specify the dimensions from Arm pit to arm pit. Also there is a hide called, "lamb touch cowhide" very soft. They used to have it on hand, but recently started offering it again.
Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
just have to say that the ''lambtouch'' is NOT the way to go for a LC if you ask me. too thin, too dark and the finish is flat. meaning dyed thru and thru. it wil never age, just getting duller.

Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
If I were going LC, I'd be tempted to go this hide. As far as I know, this is dark brown pre-d hide:
Indiana Holt wrote:Btw, peter is now offering that same skin only in dark brown. looks at their X-o jacket. it is the dark version. Im thinking that skin for LC.
Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
I have come to realize that it is the flash that makes it look this dark. it looks not like this in real life. the dark pre distressed cow looks like fifthchambers new wested.
Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
You know, I've been comparing my last Wested to the first one (which was incredible comfortable, just a tab too short in the arms) I picked up used on the bazaar. So I decided to start measuring. I'm not so sure my first one was a LC cut. Despite the fact they are both labeled 42, the old one had smaller arm holes, the top panel was about an inch shorter, the front was longer and the pit to pit distance was a few inches bigger. It had other differences, such as the collar and pockets, but I think those were custom. Is it possible that this whole time I've been wearing a differnt style thinking it was a LC?

Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
Certain features define a LC jacket, but they are not always "to the letter". One tell tale sign of a LC from the barn is that the sleeve seams and yoke seams line up -AND- the yoke is larger in width, generally. Also the straps will be anchored to the lower portion of the pockets and you will have visible snaps on the storm flap. The collar will be pointed, and pointed to the front of the jacket (basically). Chances are there will be leather facings inside the jacket and the inside pocket will be trimmed in leather and not "piped". Now, with their pocket shape--can't tell. Their LC pockets are made like the Raiders jacket, almost identical. Also, on a LC jacket, the sleeve arm holes will be larger in diameter and will usually not have gussets. This is the one feature about the LC jacket that I do not especially care for, is that due to the lower arm holes, the jacket tends to ride up when you lift your arms, unless you specify differently. just fyi.

Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
Incidently, after examining my jaket, it must be a highly custom LC. The seams match up, and it has the storm flap snaps, but the side strap is extremely low, the collar is very rounded and pockets are pretty square.Once I find my camera, I'll post some pics.

Low side straps are indicative of the LC jacket. From your description, sure sounds like it.

Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
Just off the rack, bought online but its had a #### of a lot of work done to it, about a quart of heavy duty leather dressing (saddle soap) applied to give it body, that's just to start with.

Third time's the charm? IMHO, for the money you've spent on unsatisfactory Wested jackets already, you probably could have gotten a custom Magnoli (and I bet it wouldn't have torn).Ronski wrote:I've pretty much decided to go with a Wested....
I do not own a Wested, nor do I own a Magnoli. It really depends on what you want out of a jacket, and for what you will use it. But I might recommend a search on these boards for which of those brands has torn leather like your previous jacket.
I'm certainly far from being a jacket expert, and for me, quality of craftsmanship far outweighs screen accuracy. If I get a different, more LC jacket-style jacket some day, I myself will either go for the Wings CE jacket you mentioned at one time above, or a Magnoli. But you need to go with your priorities. Just trying to offer another perspective.

Re: New LC Jacket... Suggestions?
One of the members here asked me to snap a couple of pics of UK made OTR LC's when I visited Wested. So last time I went over I did.
The darker one is a authentic brown lamb and the lighter one is the worn look hide.
Standard OTR's have stitched hems, leather facings, overstitched rear arm seams and double-stitched CS style armhole seams. Pockets could be a little higher.
Zipper is on the correct side.

This pic of the A.B.L. jacket makes my mouth water to get the leather dressing, sanding block etc out once again
A great example of a 'blank canvas' for those wishing to distress their jackets to look more SA. These may not be the most spec perfect garments but, IMO, they are a superb raw material.
