magnoli jackets....

Post by dresden »

I'm thinking about purchasing a magnoli LC jacket, I'm thinking the warm brown color with the pre-distressed option, unfortunately there's not a lot of info on here about magnolis jackets unlike say wested or todds, so what do you magnoli LC owners think of there jackets? Is the goat a good look for LC? How SA is the pattern...any pictures you guys might have would help a whole bunch to

First of all: Welcome Dresden! :)

Now, I do not own a Magnoli jacket (although I would love to one day!) But from the photos i've seen of the jackets they are REALLY nice!
If I had the money spare to spend on a Magnoli, I wouldn't hesitate to get one.
Hopefully one of the members who own a Magnoli jacket will be able to give you more info on them (or perhaps Magnoli himself will reply).

Anyway, Welcome to the forum! (Keep an eye on your wallet!) ;)

Regards
Joe

Welcome aboard, dresden.

As you may know, there are not many jacket vendors that make a really nice reproduction of the LC jacket, and my estimation is that there will be fewer in the future. Yet there is one. If you are seriously considering placing an order with Magnoli Clothiers, I'd highly recommend it! The thing to do is to specify everything-leaving nothing to chance, in terms of the specs. that you most want on the jacket. There are key features that distinguish a LC jacket from the Raiders, chiefly: width of storm flap-1 3/4", not just larger but distinctive collar, pockets as nearly as I can estimate- 7 1/2" tall x 6 1/2" wide (even though I made mine larger: 8"x7", size 44). Notice from the Indygear main site that the flap is roughly half the dimension of the pocket, so a 3 1/2" flap at its widest point is accurate. Also, I prefer the straps to be anchored toward the lower 1/3 portion of the pocket, instead of at the middle of the pocket like the Raiders jacket. The jacket was ordered in distressed goat with antique brass fittings & n****e snaps, even though the film jacket had black snaps etc., a preference thing. Having been through the process, I would do so again. There is no other, more accurate copy out there, jmo. Finally, these measurements, etc., work best for jackets in the size range of 42-44-46. Here is the end result:

Image

All of this to say that I wanted a very accurate copy of the LC jacket, and wanted it to be very distinctively different from the Raiders jacket. Mag's leather technician is skilled and has achieved the look that I mostly saw in my mind.

Good luck and post photos when you receive it. I'd like to see how it turned out.

I see from their website that they ask for a lot of measurements , which is nice, I'm of average height about 5'9 but I'm very thin, so I have to wear a size 36 jack with 24 inch sleeves & 25 inch back length. I'm not really concerned with the sizing since I know my measurements very well. Its more of the pattern & color I'm ignorant of. I have three wested jackets of different hide and color so I pretty much know what I'm getting from them. But I've never ordered a jacket from magnoli before & at almost twice as much as a wested I don't want to spend all that cash for something I might regret. So I'm doing a lot of research on here & else where to get an idea of his product. Texas Scott did you get yours in warm brown or dark brown? I think the distressing is a big part of LC jacket, so I'm heading in that direction . My main concern is the color I really love those different shades of brown that the film jacket had. I shot off a email to magnoli about the color & they said if I want the predistressed I should go with the dark brown. So I'm leaning towards that. Keep your opinions coming guys, help a fellow geek out! :D

Do a search. Plenty of info on this jacket. Yes, it's the most accurate LC in as much as the pattern was taken off an LC movie jacket - the one that was in the Smithsonian. One of our members here actually traced the pockets, etc and measured the thing.

I love Magnoli's jackets, and if I can ever afford one again/ justify yet another Indy jacket, the LC will be what I get. You won't be disappointed.

I shot off another email to magnoli, I wanted to know if the pictures on the website were of the goat or lamb, I was informed that it is lamb. I'm really digging the look of his predistressed lamb, but its about a hundred more than the goat, I have a little pain in my stomach lol....I really need to find a cheaper hobby....I think I'm going take the plunge though, I just have to wait a couple weeks &save alittle more , from what I've learned though magnoli seems top notch ....I gotta feeling I'm gonna get an extreme case of buyers guilt though, I always do lol. I'm really looking forward to placeing my order soon, but I've decided on the predistressed lamb I think it looks spot on, at least it does to me. Any of you guys own one in lamb? Id love to see a pic of it when its broken in.

I'd go goat - soft as lamb but tough as nails. Some say the original LC jacket was horse hide. It could have been cow.

If you want to be completely sure, I'd recommend getting leather samples while you are waiting for the best time to order? Getting samples of both the distressed and non-distressed leather that you are seriously considering. That way, there is no guess-work and you will know exactly what the leather will look like, color, etc.

The funny thing about the LC film jacket is that it is difficult to put a finger on the leather, which is about half the battle. I know that it has been said that it was HH, and if so, it is a really unusual HH hide, because the film jacket was what appears to be naked leather. The cheaper way to go might be naked cow or a thick type of lamb, similiar to the USW US made striated lamb, if you could choose any type of skin that is. Of course, I'm not saying that the LC film jacket was not HH, I'm just saying that cow or thick lamb might be a cost effective alternative. If you could source a darker copper novapelle type skin, it might nail the look. Dark CS-TNO leather comes close. Oh, and Mag's doesn't do horse.

In my humble yet always right opinion, if you're going to spend that much on a leather jacket, get goat, cow, or horse. They're all far more durable than lamb. Magnoli once sent me pics of a pre-distressed LC in goat. It looked phenomenal. Very much like the movie jacket. :TOH:

As requested, here are a few photos of the jacket on my person... :P

A few other selling points on this jacket (for me) were the size and config. of the yoke and the collar. The third photo of the full shot of the back is as close to the true color of the jacket as the camera could reproduce. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the pics, that jacket looks good. I like the goat, but that lamb they have seems perfect for me so I think I'm still gonna go in that direction, but I still have a few weeks too safe some funds and do more research, so I have some time to consider other possibilities, thanks for your help texan Scott, ill let you guys know when I order & receive it and ill post some pics.

I'd go with goat. the magnoli lamb is alittle too fashion lamb IMO. REALLY nice but alittle to soft and too dark for LC. I'd go with goatskin. warm brown goat.

Would warm brown goatskin with heavy predistressed do the trick? Choices, choices :)

I might even be tempted to go a little thicker on the hide as well-if it is possible?

After some consideration & your advice ive decided to go with the goatskin, I have a wested jacket in washed goat and its very soft & light, so if magnolis goat is similar ill be happy. Oh I noticed that the magnoli measurement diagram is abit different from westeds for instance the back measurement, for westeds I know you have to measure from the top of the collor stand to the bottom, when I do this I get 25 inches ( whice is the length I need ) however on magnolis diagram it shows to measure from the side of the collar to the bottom. When I measure that way I only get 24 inches. Is this basically the same? Just wanna make sure.
