Tan or reddish colored Indy jackets?
I know this is probably a silly question, but I'm not sure if purchasing another jacket in dark brown leather will really do it for me, as I already own a U.S. Navy style G-1 jacket in that color (seal). I'm worried that an Indy jacket approaching that tone may be too similar for what I'm willing to pay for at the moment. I realize that screen-accuracy is what most of you are going for, but I may be willing to make a slight concession with regard to the jacket.
Is it possible to look reasonably screen-accurate by wearing one with a slightly more red/tan sort of color, rather than the almost-black color that characterizes most Indiana Jones jackets (that I've seen)? I don't mean a bright color, but more of a dark brown color that has a slight hint of maybe a copper or rust color.
I'm kind of a newbie to Indy-gear in general, I only own a hat (Akubra Federation IV), and a safari shirt (by Cabelas, 100% cotton version), so I'm thinking I may be interested in an Indy-style jacket made by one of the reputable manufacturers, but one of a slightly lighter, less dark color if possible. Thanks if you can help.

hey antiquarian
you may want to look into some US WINGS products
i myself have a signature series vintage cowhide that is the lightest shade of brown i ever saw for an indy jacket. You could tag it fawn, almost. Lighter that what can be seen on their site pics.
it also is a great jacket, great quality. They're are a bit pricey, tho.
just bear in mind they do run a bit big (mine is a M size, which is what i wear -i have a Todds standard in M and a Wested in that fit just fine- and it's too large for me... )
cheers

indyhan is right. That US Wings jacket is fairly light, and would be accurate to a Crystal Skull jacket. Any other departure in color will reduce screen accuracy. However, I say "who gives a Hovitos' loincloth?" If you like tan or red-brown, go for it. G&B used to make a beautiful russet goatskin, which they might still do on request. Always wanted one, yet never got around to it.

The dark browns don't do it for me either. I recently got a Wested in pre distressed cowhide which has gorgeous reddish undertones and it just rocks for me.

Yeah, I gotta say the USW CS jacket should fit the bill plus it should last long enough to pass down to your grand kids

Re: Tan or reddish colored Indy jackets?
So, if I go with US Wing's antique cowhide jacket (the one that currently costs $195.00), should I go with the small? Apparently, they no longer offer medium, but that would have been a very roomy fit anyway. If I'm after a slightly more fitted Indy jacket, would their size small essentially translate as a normal medium? Thank you for the input on the jacket.
Hovitos, Wested's pre-distressed cowhide actually looks good for what I'm after too, although a bit too expensive for my price range. Would you say their jacket is durable? I am after a durable, and reasonably warm jacket.

i guess that's what i would do myself : go for a small one (and that's something i've been contemplating for a little while... )

You can see some pics of my predistressed cow from Wested about half way down, and how it looks compared to dark brown lamb. Keep in mind pics are in direct sunlight, you can see a pic in evening light higher up.
I gave the jacket a nice coat of Pecard a few months ago and it darkened beautifully.
Cheers.

It's a pound heavier than the goat and warmer. The Wested goat(which is thicker than the Todd jacket ) seems like a t shirt in comparison !I t seems pretty robust but will need a pecards to give it some water resistance . Obviously if you are stateside then cost and shipping may be the main factors! Don't know if the USvendors offer a similar hide, other than the Nowak "Happy cow".

I traded this jacket off of _ not long after these photos were shot, and it was exactly the way it appeared in hand as it does in these photos too!

Here's a link to a thread about my water Buffalo Expo.

I noticed the 3rd link is dead for whatever reason (1st one that I clicked on), but the other work, I think.

Re: Tan or reddish colored Indy jackets?
Thank you... this is a beautiful color. I think it is probably the sort I feel like I'm after right now. Wested, huh? I know they originally made the Raiders of the Lost Ark jacket (I think?), but do any Raider-shaped jackets come in this color or hide? Also, is Pecards expensive?_ wrote:Michaelson found these links to pics of my first Wested - an LC in predistressed cowhide. As I relayed above, the jacket was permeated with Pecards, which brought out the reddish undertones:
Thank you.
