Ooops!

Post by whiskyman »

I left my 10ft in the garden for a bit of sun tan yesterday - and forgot about it!! Now it's had a loooong suntan and a night of rain. :[
In a way I don't mind too much. I kept this whip as I regarded it as a "2nd", because I wasn't happy with the neatness of the strand drops. I decided to keep it as a beater and a whip to really not care about too much.
A few years ago I had an 8ft that I treated with just as little care - as an experiment to see how much abuse one of my own whips could take. I cracked it on gravel roads, wrapped trees with it, used it to pull myself up steep rocky hills, and genelly mistreated it. It took all this and looked great. I later sold it and regretted it!! I guess this 10ft is destined to take on a similar role! Once it's dried out, I'll treat it to a coat of Pecards and start putting it through it's paces!

I was reading old threads and read about you doing that

Did it shrink or much or did the previous pecards protect it?

Whips are much tougher than some people seem to give them credit for. I know some would freak out if the thong hits a board or

something, but you have living proof it doesn't do a thing :TOH:

They are tough - but I'm not advocating that anyone should mistreat a whip that cost them a lot of money!
I made this myself and can fix it myself or make another if I need one, as such I can afford to "not baby" it. :whip:

I know what you mean Nick. Now that I know a little more about whipmaking, I'm not that aprehensive about unplaiting and tightening the point, and undoing the fall hitch in my 1998 DM, to restore it. I'm even more confident about repairing whips I've made myself. :TOH:

98 morgan, nice! I'm sure even extremely experienced whip makers would be a little apprehensive about undoing something on

that. Glad it went well though, you have pics of it up?

Hey Riku... I haven't done it yet. I'm planning to do so in the coming weeks. I'd rather order a redhide fall and some crackers from David to restore the fall hitch, properly condition it, and then give it a nice coat of shellac. I'll post it in my blog when the time comes. :H:
